Unfortunately our setter has not learned her lesson about skunks and persists in chasing them....and I have to persist in de skunking her this year. I have tried all sorts of products....dog shampoo, special de skunking shampoo and people hand soap when all else failed. And what worked the best by far is.....Bath and Body Works hand soap.....the more heavily scented ones like Pineapple and Juniper berry the better.

Before we moved up here (fewer skunks here) our BC used to get into the neighborhood skunks on a regular basis. We kept the "skunk kit" on hand. 1 liter bottle of hydrogen peroxide, box of baking soda and some dawn dishsoap. It worked better than anything else we tried (and we tried them asll, sometimes all at once...)

I'm so glad we don't seem to have many up here.......

This is the recipe I use and it had yet to fail me. My dopey doberman usually gets skunked at least 6 times this time of year...

1 qt hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp liquid soap

Bathe your dog with any dog shampoo first to get off as much as possible, than apply this and let it sit on your pup a few minutes and rinse. Repeat if needed but I've never had to do more than 2 times.

toothpaste.

Crest works wonders. simple, inexpensive, and VERY effective.

Everyone of my dogs has to get skunked at least once (the stupid hound x3:no:) before they learn.

THE best product I've EVER found is a cleaning agent called "Kids 'n Pets." It's a stain & odor remover and it's great!! You can use it for furniture, carpets, clothing & dogs!

Just soak the stinky beast to the skin with the stuff (don't get in the eyes, obviously) and let them air dry. I put mine in a crate to cut down on the shaking, then just let them out when they are almost dry.

One application and the smell is gone!! Once the hound cross actually killed a skunk, so he got sprayed at point-blank range. GAWD -- the STENCH!!! But one application of Kid n Pets took the smell right out.

I get it at my local Safeway in the cleaning section but try:

www.kidsnpetsbrand.com

It's also great for urine smells on carpet, etc.

I agree, this works like a charm and this is the mixture that most vets and groomers use to deskunk an animal. the one thing I do want to add is that I found that Dawn Dishwashing detergent works best. it really helps break up the oils from the skunk spray

Believe it or not, I have had the best results with massengall douche. Leave it on at least 15minutes-it's the same as the vinegar mix but alot quicker

Between a douche for the dog and yeast infection cream for the broodmare......I would be getting pitiful looks from the grocery store cashier!!

I use this as well but I found it works better if you use this first. My golden got it in the face a couple weeks ago. I used a syringe (no needle, of course) to apply it to his face so that I could get it near his eyes. The only place I didn't apply it was between his eyes. I let it sit for 10-15 mins then rinsed. I was able to bring him in the house when he was dry and the only skunk smell was mild and coming from the area between his eyes!

A few days later I bathed him well with regular dog soap.

My dog got skunked 4 times in 3 weeks last year. Grrr.

I did not have all the special deskunking stuff on hand at the time but what worked for me was: Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo on the face--where he really got nailed. I used my regular dove shampoo on the rest of him.

I tried using the enzymatic stuff on later "attacks", but it didn't work that great IMHO. I think the trick is washing EVERY surface....and the face is often difficult to address with certain products.

I thought maybe that the lack of skunkiness was due to the fact that my nose had been permanently damaged--skunk stuff is like nose napalm burning the hairs right out!--but I had to take my dog to the vet the day of the second skunking and they all said he didn't stink.

But what about coat color with the peroxide? Will it bleach an Irish setter?

I'll second baking soda & dish soap, at least for first lather. Tomato juice works really well too. But Creolin (a pine tar based disinfectant) gives even better results. Then rinse with vinegar to neutralize any lingering odors. I've never tried hydrogen peroxide, sounds too drying for the fur.

My dog decided to kiss a skunk the DAY BEFORE a 6 hour road trip. Oy! :o

If you do the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda recipe, just remember to not try and save any. It has been known to explode. Use it up.

I've tried tomato juice, and it will work until the dog gets wet. Also lemon juice. I don't recommend either for a solution to the problem.

Tomato juice then a bath. Used it many, many, many times! Cover/soak them with a few cans and leave it one for a bit; then shampoo. Might need a second soaking but it works.

I saw this also recommended by a vet on TV on some kinda "Ask-the-Vet" segment on a PetsTV show. And of course, the TV is a great source!!:D

And no it doesn't stain....

The peroxide mix doesn't stain, I'm cracking up about the cashier comment. Also if you need to apply to the face I use a wash clothe to wipe it on and off the face. That way you can get it everywhere that it's needed but not worry about it going in the eyes.

Don't forget the KY jelly for sheath cleaning....;)

Don't forget to wash the dog's collar in the same solution.

The best is the baking soda, hydrogene peroxide and DAWN dishwashing detergent. The Dawn gets the oily reside off that seems to keep the skunk stink lingering for days, weeks, etc.

When both my standard poodles got skunked, my groomer told me about the massengil douche, but it has to be the medicated one. Apparently it's the betadene (sp) that does the trick, so I just used betadene with the tomato juice, baking soda, vinegar mix. It worked pretty well.

In a pinch-when a skunked dog has come home after store hours i have used a generously strong vinegar wash first and repeat before using soap--with some success--(I thought it worked as it is acidic like tomato juice? But now I also see folks have success with baking soda--a base--so go figure!)

My 3 pugs got sprayed by a skunk and this is what I used. I have never had a dog get sprayed by a skunk before, didn't even see skunks in my neighborhood but one night all 3 of them got sprayed. I called a nearby animal hospital and this is the mix they told me to use. I bathed them twice in this stuff and after a few days couldn't smell any more skunk. :)

I never used it, but was also told about Dawn Dishwashing detergent this summer. The person had used it several times with great success!

I have tried tomato juice without success. Inevitably Doggie Dear comes in at 10 or 11 pm skunked as I am trying to toddle off to bed.......

Tomato Juice saved us on Christmas Eve when my nephew let our greyhound out and he promptly ran up to meet Mr. Skunk! We immediately ran to the store as it was almost closing time and bathed him twice with the juice. The next day we had to drive six hours in the car with him and you could not tell (smell) that he had an encounter. Good Luck!

When my big male GSD got skunked at about midnight last year the only thing handy that I could find was "Pet Odor Febreeze"...that worked very well!!

Place plastic on back seat of car
Roll all windows on car down

Drop dog off - apoligize with a grin for the aroma
Pick fresh smelling dog up a few hours later
