He was injured at two and a half months and received three different antibiotics for three weeks before I got him. He is quite thin, big belied, deep poverty nline in his hind quarters, not a good grain eater. He was wormed two weeks ago and I saw no mature worms in his manure. He is eating hay pretty well...alfalfa. We are trying a 12 percent pellet. I have him on gastroguard, 1/4 syringe a day....I also dose him with Saratoga Stomach med and fastrack....with some electrolytes. When I began the dosing he did begin eating, but I have to bring him back in the barn for tlc because he is out with three other weanies that he gets on with very well but they are eagar eaters. Any ideas on ways to help boost his system to get him back on track will be greatly appreciated.

I've had good luck with Immunall for poor doing foals... might be worth a try in your guys case :)

I had good luck with one of these when I gave her an aged broodmare as a "mommy" figure instead of turning her out with foals of the same age that viewed her as competition. The mare didn't let her nurse, but was a very comforting presense that increased her appetite immediately.

When my foal was three and a half weeks old he had an abcess on his coffin bone and on a lot of a/b's. He started tooth grinding. I was advised to do what you are doing - alfalfa is good for the tummy, GG, and I get a non-grain pellet from the Otter Co-op which is high in bio-mosses and propbios with no grain or maolasses. Also he gets some ground flax, some oil for the Omega 3 and 6's, Aloe juice from Wal-Mart splashed on top and a few vit/mins added for good measure.
He is also on still green pasture and has local hay. He blossomed.
I know the brand Equicare will not be available everywhere, but it would be worth asking your feed supplier if you can get a similar brand. It has the Performance Horse Nutrition mix in it.
Since then he has had a bit of a relapse because he had a big knee and more a/b's and started acting growly at mealtimes, so he is back on GG and my vet said add some plain probiotic yogurt to his dinner

I have also used aloe vera juice. They seem to like it because it smells sweet. I also like to give babies Papaya. I get it at the grocery store, and if they won't eat it, make juice and syringe it. You can also by it in individual servings from stomach soother. These are good econimal solutions. GG gets expensive. I also like platinum performance immune formula and neonate, but the cost gets up there. Hope he gets better quickly.
