...of what I need (want) to bring with me to an out of town horse show is getting longer than my arm and I am still worried that I am not remembering everything.
Any odd-ball suggestions? I know the basics..but have you ever wished you had something that was out of the ordinary?

shoelaces/shoestring - you'd be surprised how well they work to fix tack
air pump or canned air for tires
water hose
clip on lights
cross ties
tools- hammer, staple gun, etc
zip ties
JUG- don't know what's in the stuff but have had 2x that I've used it and horse has bounced back from looking kind of puny, to being ready to go - great for long hauls
probios
cordless clippers
battery operated fan(s)
flashlights
that's about it, some obvious ones there, but maybe the list can help

I make lists, broken by catagory, for all the stuff I think I will need. Yep, does seem to be overkill, but at some time I have NEEDED that odd thing to be able to get home, into the ring, react to sick horse, or help out someone else.
Categories would be: Horse-Show Items, like bridle, bit, saddle pads. What he would need put on him to enter the ring. Grooming Stuff-brushes, hoof pick, hoof black if use it, fly spray and so on. My Clothes- things I need to wear in competition. Several pairs of pants, show and practice boots, belts, helmets.
Spare stuff-Horse, extra halter and lead, his sheet or blankets, buckets. A Stable list would have feeds, hay, bedding, tools to clean stall.
You make the various lists, for how you go to competitons. Put EVERYTHING on there, so you can check it as you load the truck and trailer. Even the common stuff you usually carry in trailer, so you haven't taken it out for cleaning, then forget it.
I make mine on the computer, run off a new copy of the needed lists for that trip. Sometimes I need the Driving Equipment list of harness, other times it is a riding event.
Saves me thinking I miss things, can have DD pack with the list, saving us time.

Your horse.
I have known people that forgot to load their horse and didn't notice that little detail until long down the road, or even once at the show grounds.

I do have a list, broken down into catagories ...and thought it would be too cumbersome to put it on here. Just thought I would ask to see if someone had one of those "so glad I had this with me" story. I have not shown in over 2 years...so all of my old lists are long gone!

Oh - someone just posted a great idea on my blog!! She said that she brings a spray bottle of disinfectant and water and sprays down the stall and the stall bars before she brings her horse into the stall. What a clever idea!!!

And while you are in there spraying, use your pliers and hammer ( from Tools List, Ha-Ha) to remove any staples and nails that might be sticking out of the inside wood walls. This will prevent horse getting stabbed on them while in his temporary home.
Some show venues are TERRIBLE for having exhibitors that go crazy with staplers inside the stalls. Then they leave all that metal mess for the next occupant to deal with. Amazing what you find in a dark stall by running your hands over the wall and getting stabbed yourself. With the spraying done, you pulling all the extra metal out of walls, stall will be dry again by the time horse gets in there for the night!
