View Full Version : I didn't get to ride tonight

My daughter was supposed to have a riding lesson tonight at 5. She is having some problems with her teeth and was supposedly in too much pain to ride. So I jumped at the chance to take her place. I went and got my full seat breeches out of the laundry room where I left them the last time I rode (last night). Put them on then decided I better change my shirt too since I was weed whacking and had little green bits all over me. All of a sudden I feel a sharp pain in my thigh. I moved my leg around a little and the pain got worse as it got lower down my thigh. I pull my breeches down and a little spider falls out and makes a break for it. I squished him but only after he bit me five times about an inch apart. My leg instantly gets bright red and the bites are the size of pencil erasers. Three benadryl later I am no worse for wear but am bummed I had to miss the lesson. For a while there I thought I was going to head for the ER.

Ouch! Watch out for infection - you could end up missing more than one ride.

It's nice that the weather is getting cooler but not so nice that all the outside critters are trying to move into the nice warm house for the winter with us.

Oh I feel for you!

I got stung by a yellow jacket last week on a field trip when one of my students spilled juice all over the place during lunch.

I've never been "allergic" to stings but I've gotten stung twice this summer and each time i've had a worse reaction (crazy swelling).

I've now become paranoid about stinging insects especially with a show coming up I don't want to be swollen or sick from taking the antibiotics. :(

Bummer about the spider bite. I think one of these two places sells little cardboard spider traps and they work well. I just can't remember which one sells them so if you are interested you'll have to search their sites:

Its amazing because within minutes my whole inner thigh looked like it was covered with a red cob web. I thought I was turning into spider woman for a minute there! I tried looking on the net to figure out what type of spider it was but never did figure it out. I wasn't sure whether to take anti-inflamatories or antihistamine but went with the benadryl.
Last fall I was diagnosed with spider bites all over my legs and forearms from carrying straw around the hay loft. I never saw or felt those however. I did need antibiotics for that but right now you would never even know I was bitten. Hopefully it stays that way once the benadryl is gone. Thanks everyone for comiserating!

sorry to hear you were supposedly in no condition to ride and that you had to miss your daughter's, I mean, your lesson. How's your daughter feeling?

Yowee! Sorry!

Probably not a bad idea to take BOTH Benadryl and Ibuprofen (or other anti-inflamatory).... and possibly a glass of wine!

Just make sure you have eaten so that you don't get an upset stomach... and no, the glass of wine does not count as food! Ice applied to the area will also help (both relieve pain and keep the swelling down). One of my favorite solutions -- frozen Totillas. You could actually vet wrap them to your leg for a "hands free" icing session. Keep a couple of packages in the freezer and rotate as needed.

Benadryl also makes a topical gel that is pretty good but, even better, are solutions made for stings that have topical lidocaine in them.

Hope you feel better soon!

She is going back to the dentist today for more emergency work to see if they can figure out what is causing her pain. I would have rode anyway if it were not on my inner thigh. Today you can only see where the first bite was, that is still a little red but the rest have disappeared.

I was the EMT for my daughter's pony club eventing rally two weeks ago. I lost track of how many bee stings I treated that day, it had to be at least 100. I had this cool thing to suck the stinger out if it was still in there and then a lidocaine spray to help with pain and possible infection. One lady came up to me and told me she had been stung inside her lower lip. I made sure she wasn't showing any signs of an allergic reaction then told her there was nothing I could do. I sure wasn't spraying that stuff in her mouth! I sent her to the concession stand for ice instead.

Well I guess my daughter really was in too much pain to ride. She has chronic pulpitis as well as an infection in the tooth root. Looks like a root canal is our next step after antibiotics do their job. This was a second opinion after her now former dentist told her that everything was fine and there was nothing that could be done. Three different shots could not get that tooth numb today, they said something about the infection changing the pH so that it doesn't get numb.

Ok scratch that, emergency root canal tomorrow.

You know - I'd rather have had the spider bite. Or even a whole bunch of spider bites.

The root canal went well, they were able to get her numb. The surgeon gave me a mask and let me watch the whole time. I was hoping it would be a little more exciting than it turned out to be but at least it went well. The whole tooth was filled with blood, I guess its not supposed to be that way. She was up half the night crying because the pain was so bad after vicodin and lortab. Poor kid. Makes me want to kick the old dentist square in the nuts.

Your poor kid- that kind of pain is brutal- there is nothing you can do to escape it. I am stoic.... had a bad abcess in the tooth and literally on a Sunday, was making breakfast, doped up on pain killer, and the pain broke through and I dropped the pan and laid on the floor sobbing. The next morning I was in an oral surgeons office, HAPPY at the prospect of paying $1500 to get my tooth drilled out for an hour.

I have had 4 teeth pulled- did not even need tylenol afterwards. But that tooth- ugh.

Sorry to hear of your spider bites, and your daughter's tooth! Sheeeze, not good.

Be very careful with infected teeth. I had a dentist do a root canal on an infected tooth and the infection went systemic. I ended up with IV antibiotics and the worst flu like symptoms I'd ever experienced. I was out of work for days and absolutely miserable for over a week. It felt like Lyme disease with excrutiating pain in all my joints. It felt like my arms couldn't even bend. Scary stuff.

Experiencing a more minor version of that now - had an infection under a crown. Dentist took crown off on Thurs. and I've been extremely stiff and painful since. Periodontal infection is nothing to mess around with. It can cause disease and infection of the heart valves too.

The saddest part was this morning after she finally passed out from all the drugs. I saw her laying there asleep but she still had her fist pressed up against her cheek. I guess even while sleeping the counter pressure helped the pain. The good news is she is pain free so far tonight with only advil. Amazing.
The surgeon said that the filling should not have been filled with the tooth colored composite in a filling that deep because there is a 3% shrinkage rate. Once it shrinks it can leave gaps that allow bacteria to get in. We were never told of this risk nor asked if we wanted tooth colored or metal. I am thinking that the original dentist should pay our co-pay for this procedure. I bet if I told the whole story to the insurance co they would go after him for payment in full so he may be happy to just pay our co pay. The bad part is I am a volunteer EMT and he is a life member there so it could cause problems with that. Not sure its worth an ugly scene.
Keeping this horse related we were supposed to go to dressage at Devon today but she didn't feel up to it after what she had been through. We missed last night because of the pain. Sucks, I really wanted to go.

I am scared to death of that but the surgeon is top notch and he said that is not a worry. Hope he is right.
