I cannot find any mention of this loved old warrior of the New York circuits (now 11) being retired, however tomorrow (9-25-09) marks at Belmont Park as stakes race in his honor: $65,000 Spooky Mulder Stakes (5th race) @ 6 furlongs on the dirt.

Does anyone know if or when he was retired? (Last I recall he raced this May in Delaware finishing 2nd.) What is he doing now?

If you want to see a horse (with well north of 70-lifetime starts) that was a mix of talent and absolute heart just look at the old guy in this highlight:

His sister, Samantha Mulder (not sure if full) came though our program here at Pha. I have the contact number for the breeder if you PM me.

He last raced July 21 (Delaware). I have him in my Virtual Stable, but I checked equineline.com to make sure. Didn't place. Trained by Scott Lake.

I haven't received any notifications (works, etc.) on him lately.

I was wondering the same thing when I saw the results on USA Today. That's one of the few websites I'm allowed to look at at work. At least they do usually report stakes results from major tracks every day. He was always one of my hard knocking favorites, along with Scooter Roach who has personal name significance to me.

And BTW, if anyone knows Scooter's connections tell them I'll give him a home after retirement should he need one

According to this blog, Scott Lake has retired Spooky to his farm:

It was nice to hear from Jason Blewitt on the "Belmont in 30" broadcast that Spooky Mulder has been retired to Scott Lake's family farm. The measure of racing's humanity is in the respect afforded to horses like Spooky Mulder in retirement. Here is to hoping that Spooky Mulder has a fine retirement with lots of friends to race against on the pasture in Annapolis Maryland.

That is the first time I ever heard them mention him having a family farm in Annapolis. Not so sure I believe that.

You have to admit that's a pretty savvy continued use of the fictional characters.

In case there are those unfamiliar with the X-Files series ...Samantha Mulder is the alien abducted sister (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samantha_Mulder) to FBI agent Fox Mulder knicknamed "Spooky"

It looks like there's also another half-sibling named "The Smoking Man"

Brilliant! Clip: Mulder meets with the CSM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX6a9JmOQw8).

I think the retirement farm referred to is a relative, not his. I'm surprised Mr. Lake didn't try and get one more win for $4,000 at Penn National. Perhaps he's turning over a new leaf which would be a good thing.

Spooky Mulder is at Old Friends New York. I just read that on the latest Old Friends (Kentucky) newsletter.

Like many people, I'm so glad he's been retired and sent to a great place.

The Smoking Man, Spooky Mulder, Samantha Mulder...are we going to get Fox William or Dana Scully?

How very cool that he's at Old Friends!! I'm so excited to go there at some point this year and visit him and his friends. Karakorum Patriot and Midnight Secret are in some pretty impressive company!

Digging up a zombie thread :D

Brooklyn Backstretch (Teresa Genaro) blog - a visit to Spooky 7-25-12 (http://www.brooklynbackstretch.com/2012/07/25/spooky-mulder-re-visited/)

It appears he has been living actually in Maryland in large part since he left the track in 2009

Rohrbach has modest goals for the 14-year-old gelding—slow, quiet trail rides through the woods, perhaps with a friend on another retiree who lives on her farm, Hunt the Fox.

From the youtube videos he looks fine and happy.

Just another reminder that no horse is safe from being forgotten or lost. Glad to hear that Spooky is alive and well.

So glad Spooky Mulder is doing well in retirement!

In addition to Samantha Mulder and The Smoking Man, there is also a half sibling named Agent Alex. Now, I don't know for sure, but on the X-Files, there was a recurring character named Alex Krycek. He was introduced as a young FBI agent who worked with Mulder, but then he turned into one of the CSM's lackies (and was basically a frenemy). Clearly, I was a big X-Files fan and so Spooky Mulder was a favorite. Plus, he was just so darn hard-trying, you really couldn't help but cheer for him.
