**This is not a sales ad** ;)

I have a hunter that I would like to sell in the next few months once I get him back in top show shape. He has a super cute jump and pins really well over fences in good company; he's probably not "A" level material, but he will certainly do well at the "B" or "C" rated shows in the 2'6" - 3' divisions. My problem is that I live in the middle of nowhere and am afraid that I'm going to have a really hard time getting what he is worth. Actually it will be tough just getting people to drive this far to see what I have for sale.

So I was thinking that it might be worth it to send him to a consignment/sales barn. Can anyone suggest a good place in the western MD, Virginia, or eastern NC areas? Also what kind of consignment fee/% am I looking at if I use one of these barns? Do you normally pay board on top of the consigment fee or does it differ between barns?

I've never gone this route selling a horse before, and any advice/help you can give me about this is greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Brewster Walker in NC is great, he found someone for my... darling junior jumper. I think he charges 10% commission.

Thanks for the info. I'm afraid though that the barns/trainers suggested above are way too expensive for me; I'm not talking about a mid or high 5-figure horse. Are their any consignment places that specialize in the low 5-figure/high 4-figure hunters? My guess is if I take the time to drive a couple hours to shows, it might be a better use of my dollars. Thanks the suggestions!

Having lived in Eastern NC for 6 years, I cannot recommend anyone to send your horse to. Raleigh/Southern Pines area you'll find many reputable professionals.

I can name quite a few in the Richmond/VA/Williamsburg are of VA. PM if you want more info.

Agreed 200%. Lived in Eastern NC for 18 unimportant years. It's the armpit of NC for decent level hunters. If you have to go with NC (I wouldn't, compared to VA) go with Raleigh.

I do marketing of horses here at my farm in eastern NC, 45 minutes from Raleigh. I do quite a good business, not necessarily selling to people in eastern NC but I sell to people up and down the east coast. We are ideally located right off I-95 and that makes it very convinient for people coming to look at horses. We sell "modestly priced" horses usually under $25000.

Thanks for all the great choices. I'm definitely looking into several places right now, but I'm waiting to make sure my other horse sells before I send this horse away. I should also say that besides location, I'm looking for a quiet rider. My horse will not put up with an overly aggressive rider. Do most of the above mentioned farms/riders fit that category? Or does that help narrow it down? :)

Thanks again!

Hi - I sent you a PM yesterday with a suggestion. The person/farm I suggested is probably one of the most versatile riders I have seen in a long time.

Let me know if you want anymore information about her or her facility.

I have bought horses/ponies from Tudane (Jonelle Mullen Stern) and Picturesque (Kristy Willwerth) and had good experiences with both.

Generally, I would say Tudane has horses in a higher price bracket than Picturesque. While they have some in the six figures, the one we bought from them was under 25k, and we actually looked at three there in that range that were all nice. They were all VERY professionally represented.

I belive that both are in the Warrenton VA area (although not exactly sure as I am not from that area!). Both have websites.

Personally, I would probably call both and talk to them personally to find out what their program is like from the consignor's end and what sort of market they feel that they might have for your horse. That might provide deciding factors for you. Otherwise, I would encourage you to visit both as well - they are not far from one another.
