Has anyone ever had a horse with a P3 fracture (no displacement)? If so, how long was your horse on stall rest and did they recover and go back to their previous job?

I appreciate hearing anyone's experience with this injury.

TIA!

My mare had a wing fracture of P3 many years ago (I think she was 6, now she's 23). It's hard for me to remember exactly how long she was off work, because we had strangles go through the barn right before she was diagnosed with the fracture, and she was obviously out of work for that. I want to say it was around 3-4 months, but I may be way off on that.

Prognosis really depends on the type/location of fracture. My mare's was non-articular, which has a much better prognosis than a fracture involving the joint. There are 6 types of coffin bone fractures, and some have a much better prognosis than others. Hers healed uneventfully and never bothered her again afterward, and she did jumpers and evented for around 10 years.

How strange - I have a sick horse that had to be cultured and tested for strangles. That happened Sunday and now today one of the other mares got loose, fell in the barn aisle and suffered the fracture. Been a great week so far.

Anyway, hers is a wing fracture and as of now the joint is not involved. They put a bar shoe with several clips on to stabilize the foot. They are saying 4-6 months for recovery and seem hopeful she will have a full recovery. I am just hoping she will be able to have limited turnout after a couple months. We go back in 6 weeks to reset the shoe and x-ray the foot to see how things are going.

That is encouraging that your mare evented after the fracture healed. My mare is 9 and a dressage horse.
