Just got my new Practical Horseman and on the News Bits page it shows GM doing bunny show jumping at a horse show in Sweden. I loved the photos!

Seriously, I need to switch "disciplines." This might be the only way that I ever get to see the inside of a "Grand Prix" ring.

I laughed until my sides ached! This was just too funny. So, how do you "train" a bunny to jump like that? Now I know I need another sport! Bunnies have no need to have a trailer, a stall etc....plus they could possibly sleep in the house! Hmmm....I would just love to know how this is all done and where on earth do they have their competitions?

There was a picture in COTH not too long ago of GM and his bunny with a comment that said in the final jumpoff George's bunny refused some fences and took frequent potty breaks! :D I guess that bunny didn't care that he was being handled by the "GOD" of showjumping. I'll bet that was a first for GM. ;)

I thought the bunny looked great, but would have loved to see it's bunny hair braided and it's bunny feet polished. :) Seriously though, that is too cute. I wonder how they trained the bunny to jump like that!

It's actually not hard at all to train bunnies. :) My husband and I have two lop mixes we adopted about a year and a half ago and I'm training them for all sorts of things - coming when called, walking on leash, throwing a ball through a hoop, jumping, etc. Rabbits can be clicker trained the same way a horse or dog is and have a similar intelligence level as a dog, though they respond to stimulus like a horse would, by virtue of their being a prey animal. They initially start out with a very short attention span, but that gradually increases with training.
My bunnies live in an extra large dog crate in our apartment (with a foot wide board bolted widthwise about halfway up so they have something to jump on), trained themselves to use a litterbox (I put one out and within two hours it was the only place they would go) and love any sort of climbing/jumping activity. We only close their cage door at night and they have the run of the house during the day - they always use their litterbox and seem to enjoy being free-roaming house rabbits. :) My girl (Tora) is highly food motivated while my boy likes snuggling and they seem to think that the higher they can get the better! I've caught Tora on a chair eyeing the distance to the tabletop. She made it and I thought she'd be happy there, but then she noticed the countertop. I'm not going to let her get up there, but she'd certainly try to! :)
I'm surprised by how much they like heights/how high they can jump since they're not exactly "big" rabbits. When standing evenly on all fours, Tora is 10 inches at the shoulder while Leo is about 9. She weighs about 9 lbs and he's about 8.

I just saw the picture in the PH last night and it made me laugh! I used to have a big old long hair floppy eared rabbit (Mr. Bunny) and it was like a big old dog - litter box trained, knew his name, etc, but I can't imagine he would have jumped around a course - haha!

One of the other moms at the barn and I have joked to our DD's that once they are off at college and we are without horses we will be breeding bunnies and teaching them to jump!

Hahahah when I saw "bunny show jumping" I was thinking like itty bitty jumpers and I was confused. This is way better. So cute.
