I always heard Zebras were very mean and hard to train, prone to kicking and biting more then horses/ponies. I have no idea if there is any fact to that or not but this one sure looks docile enough. I still think I'll steer clear of the little guys!

Heard the same. No idea if the source was knowledgeable. I noticed the ad has temperament marked '3' with 1 being the calmest (of 10.)

Are zebras regulated, as some exotic animals are?

Thanks for sharing this! :)

Yeah but the braids would be in alternating black and white....coooool

I had also heard that zebras were very difficult to train, but I guess there are exceptions to everything.

Holy crap they want $10k+!

Zedonks are available in the penny saver for pennies on that.

I was sorely, s o r e l y tempted once to buy one for $800 and have it shipped to a veddy fancy show barn with a shipper friend coming back from Fla as an extra surprise on the truck...

Just a plain old zebra will run you around $4-5K, so a broke to ride one, I'm sure would sell for that much. Only the endangered species of zebras, like Grevy's or Hartmann's would be subject to requiring special permits. Zebras are known for being quite aggressive, but there are certainly many exceptions, especially if they are handled early on. Busch Gardens has a zebra they are using as an animal ambassador and Ringling Brothers used to have some that pulled a cart in their show. In general, I don't think they'd make great hunters, because they have short, thick necks, so would be unlikely to jump good. I am a Zookeeper who works with zebras and we used to have a stallion who loved to jump things. He'd run around the exhibit jumping in and out of tree wells and over logs in the yard. He jumped pretty cute for his neck confirmation and was a fairly cute mover! He might have made a cute pony hunter! He'd never get lost in the hack class! I never could get my hands on him, though. He was not at all aggressive, which we were very happy about. I was able to target train him. His "wife" didn't care so much for jumping and is not the cute mover he was, but she is very sweet and solicits attention. She was imprinted at birth, although mother raised. Zebras are way spookier than horses. I guess a calm zebra would generally be a DEAD zebra! I keep trying to get my Zoo to take my old, grey mare and paint some stripes on her. A nearly 17hh zebra would be something to see!

Janet-are you allowed to show zebras? You are not allowed to show mules or clones, so I think a zebra pony hunter is prob not allowed either :) ... I am talking A rated USEF

Too funny! I have really been wanting a zorse for some time. Don't know if I am still interested since the vet told me that zebra's are nasty and really smart. If you don't work with them everyday, they figure out ways to avoid what they learned the day before.

BTW-when i let my trainer in on the fact that i wanted a zorse, she invited me NOT to bring it to the barn and have her train it:lol:. what a great look she threw me!

More power to them! Zebras are generally percieved as very hard to break/train.
I'm guessing this particular one has a nicer way about him but still....

That's cool! Judy Richter had a Zebra at Coker Farm in Bedford, but it was definitely not tame enough to ride! I used to think it was soo cool when I was a kid riding there.

I have a friend who trained a zorse - it was the most difficult little S*%t to train, and while she did accomplish some things with him, he certainly didn't leave there as broke as the one in this ad! He was a tricky, sneaky, smart, FAST little dude.

Don't want to spoil the fun - a zebra would be really cool to have (if i could fit on one, I'm 5'9) but is anyone else bothered that it's only 3 and has already been rodeo'd and hauled every which way?

If I was a potential buyer I'd be worried that they had pushed it far too hard too early just to get attention being it's a zebra.

What a bargain to have a piece of Africa in your backyard. Thank goodness he's gelded. I could imagine people getting ideas... :D

THis was my very first thought. Thats a lot at 3. I wonder if they mature faster than horses?

If it is as quiet as he seems I would totally bring him to a lead line class :)

I had also heard that zebras cannot be ridden. I watched a nerdy nature show about it once. They said their confirmation isn't what you look for to carry weight, be it pack weight or a person, and the few that have been used end up severely lame with degenerative spine problems. They breakdown fast and by the time they are "broke" to work (due to their personalities) they are usually in a lot of pain.

This was a few years ago, maybe new information has been uncovered, but I've always lived with the assumption they cannot be ridden.

I know a farrier who always referred to the horses that were a pain to put shoes on as zebras. One day I asked him why. He said he had friend that paid him to go to S. Africa to shoe their horses and why he was at it trim the zebras on the reserve. He said they were vicouse! They bite they kick and want to hurt you. He had said they tried to break a few of them but the zebras would turn their heads a pull you off with their teeth and try to trample you once you hit the ground. There is a youtube video witha guy that was training a zebra to drive and when he works withe the zbra he works in full padding inluding a motorcycle helmet!

Another zoo employee here (ex now but recent) and there isn't enough money to put me on a zebra. Though it's obviously a different speices (and looking at those pics actually I question that being a purebred and not a cross with something else) the Grevey's at our zoo are considered mandatory Code 1 animals, along with the large carnivores, mandrills, and gorillas, meaning that ANY escape is considered an immediate danger situation and requires lockdown and calling out the Dangerous Animal Response Team with the tranquilizer gun and the shotgun backup. The vets do minor work not requiring sedation from behind a chest-high barrier when dealing with either species we had so they don't get kicked.

I'd consider a 3yo basically mature, but then I don't know if anyone's done detailed studies of things like joint closure from a perspective of using them to bear weight, as most people aren't thinking of zebras as riding animals!
