I would like to get my dog a new blanket this year. He is an 11 lb Shih Tzu with a puppy cut so his hair is short. My jack russel female does well with one of the polar fleece coats that velcro along the spine. However, that isnt very convenient for the boys! Any recommendations for blankets that have just a small belly strap that wont get peed on? Doesn't need to be barn durable, just enough warmth for some short walks. I love the baker blanket but it looks like the crossing belly straps could get in the way of the stream.

Weatherbeeta! I have the fleece blankets, as well as the "kennel coats" I think they're called, which look just like a horse stable blanket. They have a thin belly strap that is toward the front near the ribs. I have 2 male dogs who wear their Weatherbeetas all winter and have no problem. And of course they're no problem for my female also. :)
After spending a fortune on cutesy doggie coats from the pet supply places, I just started buying Weatherbeeta dog blankets from the tack catalogs. The quality is great, they last forever, wash great, and the best part is they don't slip, pinch, or slide.
The problem with most cutesy doggie coats is that they just sit on top of the back and barely down the sides. The Weatherbeetas have a healthy drop on either side, just like horse blankets, so they really stay put.
I sound like a commercial but seriously, I live way up north and it gets cold here. Weatherbeetas have been the best thing I've found yet! :)

My border collie mix (boy) LOVED his Pessoa blankie when we lived in NY. He never peed on the straps and the pessoas come in very small sizes.

I have a Ruffwear one for my little boy (8 lbs., so probs similar size?) and it's worked very well. I really hear you about the peeing issue! So many of the made-for-dogs blankets don't keep the, erm, "trajectory" in mind!

Second the Weatherbeeta rec! I have the cutest blackwatch plaid number in fleece for my Schnoodle, and he wears it all winter. I have a Schneider's waterproof turnout in red and black, too, but he's such a pansy that he hates the rain, so it doesn't get as much wear. I can put the turnout over the fleece when it gets very cold and wet. No peeing problems, either.
Our little Cav mix wears a blue Weatherbeeta knock off, but he seems comfy in all temps, so it's more vanity on my part. :)

I loved my Weatherbeeta I had for my big dog too. She was a girl, but the strap was right behind her elbows, well out of the way of any undercarriage equipment of a girl or boy. I was glad to find one big enough for her (125lbs) and didn't have to get her a foal coat. (We lived in VT for a year and she went to work with me most days and needed that little extra to keep warm in the truck while I made 15-30 minute stops.)

I have a plaid Foggy Mountain coat (http://www.dogcoat.com/) for my little dude, and I swear that thing is indestructible. They have straps like a horse blanket, so no peeing issues, and even after months of rubbing, rolling and wrestling, the coat looks practically new after a wash. They make a long cut for dachshunds, shih-tzus and other sausage-shaped dogs. :)
