Foal was weaned last week, over the course of a few days. Both are doing well, but mare's udder is fuller on one side then the other. One side is a bit hard, not too hot, but double the size of the smaller size. She is off all grain, just hay and some pasture. Turnout is pretty much 24/7. I did some warm compresses and light massage today to help ease her udder.
What else can I do and what are the hallmarks of mastitis?

Definitely keep her out. Exercise is her friend and if she's experiencing any pain, some banamine won't hurt.

I would definately keep a close eye on it. If it doesn't start to come down and "cool" in the next day I would have her looked at. Just weaned a foal myself and udder went down evenly on both sides.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought that unevenness might be a concern. The warm compresses seemed to help and she got dream eyed on me.
