Luckily I've never had to research joint supplements, until now. My new horse (6yr old OTTB) went to the vet the other day for a lameness diagnosis. After deciphering what it was, she suggested adequan or something a like that will help his joints. Like I said I've never looked for supplements. (Crossing my fingers that it stays easy) I cannot afford adequan without selling various body parts, but have heard good stuff about cosequin and the such. What do you use? And what is a waste of nonexistant money of mine?

Adequan or Legend. It is really not any more expensive than Cosequin and has research to back it up. Lots of people swear by feed-through joint supps, but if you are on a budget and want to get the biggest bang for your buck (meaning you want to KNOW what your using is really helping), you really should pony up the cash and get Adequan or Legend (depending on the diagnosis).

Cosequin is backed up by research. their claim to fame is that the glucosamine and chondroitin is of low molecular weight, which helps it to actually get into the joint space, which other oral joint supplements do not. nutramax, the company that puts out cosequin, is a very good company and their research is valid. i give it to my old pony and my young tb. you can buy a tub that's over 400 doses (for a one scoop dose, some horses require two for maintenance) so for my pony, one tub ($160ish) lasts over a year.

of course, adequan and legend are excellent products too. i'm not sure you'd see much difference between the three, other than price :)

hope that helps!

do adequan. Even if you can only afford it every other month you'll see a difference

as for feed throughs, if you decide to go that route make sure it has the NASC seal on it. without a NASC seal there is ZERO guarantee that what's written on the outside matches whats on the inside of that bucket. I really like Aniflex complete as a feed through I have used it and seen results

Cosequin may have studies, but you have to actually read them. I read through the abstracts, and all their studies show is that the glucosamine and other products they use were found in higher levels in the joint after feeding. The larger unanswered question though is what this means. There is no data that really shows that it does anything good. If someone has a reference, then please post it because I've been looking for the data and couldn't find anything.
If you want something, go with Adequan. If you do the month of 7 doses, then that will be pricey, but after that it is $40/vial, which may be cheaper than an oral supplement depending on how often you give it.

Adequan...

I give one dose/month per my vet's recommendation for prevention/maintenance of my 16 year old OTTB. Started about 5 years ago and he is still going STRONG!
