View Full Version : Are We Still Afraid of Diamond Dog Food?

I am tired of trying to find a dog food that I have easy access to that does not make the Ginormous White Spotty Dog itch.

My feed store carries Diamond Naturals and I would love to try it on him. He also gets brown rice, flax and veggies so I would just be adding kibble.

But... wasn't there some gawdawful recall on Diamond dog food? Are we afraid of it? Sure would hate to trade itching for something worse.. like dead..

There was a bad recall on Diamond about 4 years ago ( I could be wrong on the exact # of years). The problem was fixed and I have feed the Naturals brand for the past three years with no problems.

The problem with Diamond was a fungus/toxin on the corn, aflatoxin - I don't feed corn anymore and if your dog has allergies, I don't think you should either. Innova is good food, Eagle Pac Holistic is good food, there are others that don't include corn in the mix.

The Naturals line has no corn :)

I found the Naturals line and was impressed at the ingredient list based on the $$. I have been using it for the past 4-6 months and have been happy with it.

I did hear of the recall a few years ago. I would imagine that would have made them extremely aware of what goes into their food, and I would think it less likely to have any problems.

The feed store I worked at years ago we sold a lot of Diamond, to breeders in large amounts, mostly. I figure if it is good enough for them, it is good enough for me.

I don't know anything about the Diamond recall, but the Natural line looks decent. If you've been having issues with itchy pups, have a look at the ingredients list of what you fed before, and see if you can find a Natural formula with a different protein source. Often the protein is the problem for dogs with food allergies, but not always.

Two other possible options: PetGuard food, which you can get at Target. And Taste of the Wild, a very reasonably priced grain-free food that most Tractor Supply stores carry, among other places.

And there's Triangle Pet Supply ... they deliver, though not sure if you're in their area. Their prices are pretty good and they have a pretty good variety, but they only carry higher-end stuff. www.trianglepet.com

I've unfortunately been down the dog food allergy path with the big doofus hound, so let me know if I can help.

I have been feeding the Diamond Senior 8+ for about 10 years now. I have a 10 year old Great Dane who has been eating it since she was 2 and she is still sound and healthy.
I have been very happy with it and I wasn't affected in the recall because it doesn't have any corn in it.

Since we're in the same neighborhood-ish, I bet I know which feed store you're talking about! Our barn dogs get Diamond (Naturals I believe, but it might be regular Senior) and they LOFF it. Both are senior, one ~10, the other 13, and both are doing really well. It may not be the most stupendous food on the market, but these guys are surely doing just fine and I love getting it delivered!

If you're going to buy Diamond, do Taste of the Wild. It's their superb, high end, grain-free food. Much better than their lower end stuff, and very affordable too.

Of course I am keeping in mind that it is very possible that this dog does not have any sort of food allergy at all, and that it is his frequent forays into the pond and creek that are making him itchy.. you've met him, you know  Saturday he came out of the pond BLACK and GREEN and got a bath immediately, conditioned and brushed out. Beautiful. That afternoon he returned to the pond :( you know he now will just stand there to be hosed off...

I think I will try the lamb version, he has never had lamb TTBOMK. I'll report back. Tractor Supply is a wee bit too far away for me and I don't think my feed store will special order TOTW for me.. but I can always ask...

We've been feeding Diamond for about a month now and all of our dogs seem to like it. Oldest is 13 and youngest will be 2 in January. We have five ranging from 100lbs to 10lbs.

I checked out Petguard's website and then found some place to buy it (online, wasn't listed at Target here in anyway.) Lordy, $53/bag and for only 38lbs. WoW. It sounds like great food, but that's a bit rich for my blood. TOTW is $43 plus tax for only a 30lb bag. We're paying around $30 for the Diamond, 40lb bag I believe.

The recalls are long over with. Diamond isn't a bad food it just isn't the higher end designer food like TOTW, Orijen, Evo, etc.

Diamond also makes Costco's food, which can save you a few more bucks. I feed Costco along with Innova and top it with some Evo canned w/water with a couple of fish oil capsules thrown in. My GSD's look pretty good!
