For those of you who have re-started older broodmares, esp those who have had a lot of foals, do they every loose that "momma belly"??
Indy was only 5 when she foaled, and was started back into trail riding shortly after weaning so she's fitted back up. The other two I've restarted, one is staying a broodie and is looking good, but still is round.
The one I have now is no longer going to be bred, but might be a local show pony if we can get her looking not so pregnant. She's had 12 foals in the past 14 years. Everyone is asking me when she's due with #13 :eek: Confirmed NOT in foal last weekend.

Lots and lots of slow hill work like an endurance horse would get.

Lots of work will get it off!! My broodie right now is 5 1/2 months along and is in regular work still...you can just see her baby belly under the nice and toned one she has :) She did revert back to a baby belly very fast when not in work (or in foal for that matter!!)

I've given up on my girl, she's coming 21 years and hopefully consecutive foal #14 was her last. She's earned the mommy belly.

I'll let you know next spring ;)
This is what I'm starting with, Daisy popped out her 4th (that I know of) baby in May:

My Friesian mare had 3 foals, each time bred back on her foal heat. She had almost no exercise -turned out in pasture, but she is extremely lazy, so I'm sure she didn't run around much. It has taken me almost 2 years to get rid of her baby belly and get a decent topline on her. I don't have an indoor, so weather prevents riding a lot in winter. I really started noticing a difference this spring when I started jumping her over cross country fences and galloping up hills in the park next to where I live. Yes, a Friesian that jumps:) she loves it. Do lots of lateral work, cavellettis, and hills, and in time you will get there.

LOL, I am interested too...
We will get started on carrot stretches right away!
My farrier asked on Saturday if I was sure that Hope wasn't bred. DH calls her momma buddha. Even though I plan on putting a baby back in that belly in early spring, I want my girl to look good and have some tone.
I have noticed that supplementing with alfalfa (in my case 1 scoop of alf pellets twice daily) seems to help give that extra "oomph" to build topline.

Jen - I did notice with Hope that when I started just hacking her on the hills 2x a week it did help... a little  I think this new mare could give Hope a run for her money on the baby belly though! We just started her on alfalfa this week, see if it helps! ---- Can't wait to see inspection pictures!!!
