View Full Version : Hunter Derby: General info --Jog up and drug testing?

Just wondering...

I read my COTH last night that covered the Derby Final in KY.
They said something about a jog up.

When do they drug test and jog the Hunters. And what do they test for? Is there a 0 drug tolerance--or an allowed limit for NSAIDs?
I've only been to the local schooling shows...

Also, besides finding a hunter/jumper group in my area, how would one break into the hunter derbys? I have an eventer that would rather be a hunter. He would be FAB in the Derbies. I would love to cross over too.

thanks!

The Hunter Derbies run under the same USEF drug rules as USEF/USEA Horse Trials.

They run similar to a FEI class -- the horse has to jog for soundness either earlier that morning or right before the class. If the horse is unsound, they will not be able to compete in the class.

I would suggest going to watch Derbies in your area to decide if you and your horse are "suitable" to compete. Of course, any horse can enter a Derby but it deff takes a certain type to be competitive -- a certain ride, a certain look.

Good luck!

That's really really cool.

He's suitable.
I can most likely swing it but if needed I'll just hire a pro.

I don't think we have any derbies here. At least I've never heard of any.
I'm in Texas. I need to look up the schedule of the Texas Hunter/Jumper Assoc.

I'll hit the hunter shows for a year and then move along if I feel like it would a fun endeavor.

He's certainly qualifed to kick butt at the A shows...
And obviously will lope around a derby course like it's the same ol same ol.
: )

Is this a horse you want to show to sell? Or do the hunters because he can and you want to have fun?
If resale...different prices for different levels as I am sure you know. And Hunters can be very ,very political at upper levels so you may need to hire the "right pro" and have very deep pockets :D

He's the love of my life.

I think he would really enjoy the derbies.
I would enjoy them as well and I think they would be loads of fun.

Nice to see that you're branching out. Just remember the lessons you've learned as a Eventer and you'll be your usual butt-kicking self.

Is this the gray horse? From what I've seen picture-wise, he's got a nice hunter-y jump. I've never seen video, so can't say anything about how he goes. But good luck and have fun. We really don't bite as hard as people like to believe. :D

yes the grey horse. He lopes up to 4'6'' asleep and jacks his knees to his eyeballs...and often over jumps by a foot for fun. I've never felt him put effort into his job.
perfect rhythm
pretty -- flashy
a big horse with 14 foot canter stride (so 2-4 stride combos can be tough)
perfect auto changes
spooks at nothing
and he makes fantastic decisions

He's a hunter and I think it would be a great endeavor for me.

And my new youngin will be a nice jumper.
So they both can come along!

I want to go to Tyler to watch Oct 30th!

I for one would love to see your horse out there strutting his stuff. I've been thinking that my next horse should be a failed eventer. One that's too slow or doesn't like water or something...

It's a shame you just missed a really nice derby/show a couple of weeks ago in Tyler.
George Morris was one of the judges. He's a fan of the "hand gallop", so you would have had that going for you. :)
Peter Pletcher had several horses in the mix and had the winning ride. Lots of really nice rounds and a beautiful course. I loved seeing the LARGE fallen tree/log as part of the course.

Definitely plan on watching/competing in the Derby in October - it is truly bringing back some excitement and challenge to the hunter ring.

Good luck if you decide to ride in it.

Peter used to ride for Ann a little bit now and again and if I needed a pro I would probably try to tag him.

The horse would not be ready for another year. He's rehabbing but seems to be doing quite well. It will be a while before I'm not afraid to jump him over 3' lol.
Hunter derbies, I understand are 4'.

Here he is as an early 4 year old during his first bit of jumping. He caught us by surprise and has only gotten better. I've since bought a saddle that keeps me in the tack. lol
I've shown 3'6'' and he leaves just as much room between the rails and his feet over height as he does in the pic posted.

I should have just taken him straight to the hunter ring. I'm smarter now. Ya live and learn.

He looks fun :) Good luck with your derby training! I truly wish one of my clients had a qualified derby horse...all of our nice hunters max out at 3'6". They CAN do 4' (I've taken them in the regulars to fill the division for friends) but its not nearly as pretty.

ya it seems like 3'6'' is the cut off.
It's hard to lope down a line and jump 3'6'' + without transforming into a jumper and adding RPM to get up and over.

Those horses that can jump quiet with little effort over height are hard to come by.

He's so nice. I've seen many of the pictures you've posted on the eventing forum and, no disrespect intended, always thought he could make a nice hunter.

Show us some more. :D

Texas has plenty of Derbies, so no worries there. :)

I've always thought your grey horse was a doll. I think he could potentially be a superstar in the Derbies, especially if he has that great Eventer brain.

This horse if my life so ask and you shall receive. Plus I'm really fed up with work and would rather show off his silly talents. I'll never have a horse this nice again..that is for sure.

lol. he has some really fun jack and crack XC photos.

Jumper trainers always wanted me to smoosh him into a little collected ball. I found that it just doesn't work that well for him.
I need him to lope around softer with less impulsion (power in the butt) and a little flatter frame to stay on.

this is my all time favorite XC photo. He tried to cut his leg off as a 3 year old. The tendon (the tendon that runs down the front of the cannon) grew back a bit tight and his white hoof physically cannot tuck as tight as the black.

I love this photo too because it was a SJ round that I almost didn't hang on to.
My friend told me to 'pop a wheely and get him using his ass more' right before I went in. So I did.
It worked all too well and I was hanging on for dear life.
The pic is the B of a two stride of 3'6'' square oxars going down hill.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p189/xckaboom/eyesclosed-1-1.jpg
I came out of the ring and said, "well that was embarrassing", to Danielle.

Another 4 year old jump that caught me by surprise.
He loped up to it, laa-tee-dah--doo de doo, and then BAM!
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p189/xckaboom/boombaby.jpg
He comes up so hard that I loose my wind sometimes.

One of my all time favs...I had this one blown up to an 8 X 10.
He's afraid of heights. Whenever there is a hill involved he slams on the breaks.
We were running about 400mpm or so here. When I told my friends why I had a bloody lip they did not believe me. Until the proofs came in!! LMAO
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p189/xckaboom/boomgw.jpg

I have two pages in his scrap book that contain only closed eye pics.
Does George Morris give any extra points for hand galloping with eyes closed?
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p189/xckaboom/eyes.jpg

He's a dork sometimes. In such cases I make him wear the cone. I think some parent needs to dish over 200K to me for this horse. lol. Would be a great kids horse.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p189/xckaboom/conehead.jpg

Looks like he's going to end up a loud red flea bitten. oh joy.
He has a full brother that was sold by Steve Wheater sp? to some people in LA. Anyone seen a big grey horse hangin out in the hunter around that area?

boy after this thread and the talk of derbies being abundant in the area I really have the bug!!!!

I'll need brown tack. I've been thinking about fancy stitched brown tack for a week!!!

This is a random offer, I know, but since I'm in the area and horse-less, I have tons of nice tack that you'd be welcome to borrow, at least until you decided whether or not the Hunter rings suits you and your boy.
