View Full Version : Older Style WB Stallion...in Canada?

Looking for a short-coupled stallion with a lot of bone for next year. Something very old fashioned wb as my mare has shown she throws a leggy, tall foal herself and I want to add the more solid bone structure and width from the stallion.

Other things I'd like proven in the stallion's get are a lofty gait and very strong loin area and hind end angles. Breeding for a versatile hunter type (i.e. doesn't need the perfect hack trot but should move decently for a hunter. Canter is more important).

One catch though - I would like to look within Canada. I've always bred to the US but would like to stick to my homeland this time if possible. I'm sure some of you have used the northern stallions.

How about Hadrian? www.gethorses.net
VERY old style Trakehner. Massive bone. I have had several Hadrians and they all have wonderful temperaments too.

Tasker's Waldaire has EU frozen semen which can go to Canada.

I would check out Gareth at www.bri-melfarm.com
Exactly what you are looking for.
Saw him a few weeks ago, super gaits, super temperament, excellent jump but very large bone, frame and G-line all the way.

Tacorde from Klondike Victory Farm seems like a horse that would fit the bill: http://www.kvf.ca/tacorde.htm

I thought of him too.:)
TEMPRANILLO same farm and does dressage. He can jump really well also, but has a longer back.

TALME is shorter.

I second Rio Grand. He is a very.big.boy. though. I have seen him in the flesh. Thrown lots of huntrs.

Oxford - very big boy, throws great hunters with fantastic temperaments and jumps!

VDL Ulando H - while not an old-fashioned type himself, he has been proven to throw a lot of bone in his offspring, along with excellent gaits and great minds. I used to own the stallion and have two of his offspring, one of which won the Eastern Canadian freejumping competition this year and who is the quintessential modern jumper type. His full brother, just 2 years old and out of the same dam, is bigger boned than his older brother and is very much a hunter type, particularly in his movement (big, slow canter; flat-kneed trot) and in his temperament (absolutely nothing fazes him). The younger colt is also very similar in build to a 3-year-old Ulando son named Bellagio who is topping the hunter line classes up here in Canada, and who I would say is very typical of the type of horse that Ulando is producing.

I agree with both the Tacorde and Oxford suggestions.

Thanks all. I'm going through the suggestions right now. Just wanted to add, I'd like to avoid frozen if possible.

I love Pacific Star STV. Check him out.

Does Donner Bube count as old-style? Love him. I've seen some massive foals sired by him, out of medium-built mares.

I second the Radjah Z suggestion. We have quite a few by him, and he fits every part of your description.

I have a filly by rio grande - yes I think he would do but only frozen is available.

Pacific Star - I have one coming next year.

I would suggest Braveheart - he is 16.3 and my colt by him is 17.2hh - here is a link to him.

Anyone have a link to Radjah Z's site? I found one video online, but can't find a site with his info including offspring?

he has no site, but you can get to his owner Tannis Bennett on Facebook, and she can give you lots of info. He was 12th last year in USA for hunter sires, I believe.

I agree, there are some bigger Donner Bube's out there. They are *not* the quietest and would not recommend him for a mare with any spice. I own one and there are three within spitting distance from me. All are the same. Check the semen out on Radja Z. I think they had some problems with it didn't they ?

If you're looking for bone, Braveheart is a definite option... My youngster is out of a 15.3hh petite TB and is well on her way to being a tank...16.3 at 4. Her full brother is 17.3.

I have seen several of this stallion's babies, as well as seeing the stallion in person. Has an absolutely lovely temperament & movement. Placed well at the NAYRCs with a junior rider in dressage, but he also has the "jump" as you can see in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRnDKH9xdq4&NR=1

Information on him can be found at:

http://www.stallionguide.ca/stallions/odilon.php

Has bone but is not "heavy" type.

Oberon may be a consideration. KWPN,approved CWHBA 30 day test. Shown dressage and eventing. Successful sire of futurity foal winner, and placers. Young stock now competing successfully in dressage and hunter rings. Produces offspring that are solid minded, even off trakehners and arabians. We may also be standing a young fellow of the old style next year, to limited mares, while we get him out in the show ring and off to licensings, and possibly the 30 day test.
Radjah Z was not verified the last few years that I know of. I'd heard his semen no longer shipped, but you never know. He has some nice offspring out there, as you would expect. Possibly check the CWHBA website and go to the Stallion Directory. There are a number of good choices there, that have already been mentioned on this thread. But the pedigrees and other information there is quite helpful. The CSHA stallion directory online is also well populated with stallions that may be suitable for your mare.Great to hear that you will be shopping Canadian this year! There are some really awesome horses out there...including Wolkentanz II who stands now in Manitoba.

Incorrect. Semen is of good quality, and is shipable but Tannis doesn't offer him for many outside breedings each year. There is no website, but the you tube video lists contact info (I put it up for Tannis :D). While Radjah wasn't activated into the Canadian Warmblood stallion list for the past few years, he still maintains several of his European approvals. I can't remember how many he has, but there are a number.....

Kind of outside the box but what about domritter? He is in newmarket at king's windy fields with Michael Loew. Older stallion excellent semen. He has sired primarily hunters including the gelding Kentucky who was 2nd in AA owners in 2002 in Ontario. Amongst other accolades. No website but you can call mike and go to see him in person. PM me and I'll give you the number.

Wow so many helpful suggestions! I thought it might be a long shot posting for a Canadian based stallion on this board. I'm very grateful for the advice and will definitely look into them all. Thanks!
