View Full Version : Photos of my farm flood and thread on metro Atlanta farms in need

I am in my house and can walk to my barn. So far the waters have not reached the barn.

Thanks to my wonderful friends and neighbors we have an evacuation plan if needed-though I don't think it will get that bad.

I have a high pasture that the horses would be safe BUT my new foal is with them and can't go out with all of them at this time.

It is still very scary even though I am hoping the worst is over.

I can't get to my parents property-but Polo is safe in a barn over there. My neighbor is going to give him hay.

I can get to mine-Julian, Milo, Hugo and baby Logan.

My donkeys and goats are on the other side-they can go very high on a hill and be safe if they know to do that-thankfully they are also where my neighbor can lead them higher if needed.

Funny thing-my house is WAY up high but my barn area is lower lying.

This happened one other time a few years back when the hurricane came through.

It is the CREEPIEST feeling watching my front gates go under.

Edited to add: There are some horse farms having MAJOR issues. I just heard on the news a farm in Sandy Springs is struggling to evacuate horses-they are tying them along the road until they can get them out.

I bet money Huntcliff had to evacuate and no idea where else.

If anyone has troubles or can offer help, please post here so those in need and those that can help can find each other!!

Sorry to hear/see that Leah. I'm glad that you and your critters are all safe, at least for the time being.

How did the property across the road escape the flooding?(at least that's how it looks in the photo).

I'd be willing to build you an Ark but I don't think I could get it there in time. :). So , in an attempt to bring a smile to your face during this dark time, I offer you the following:

Rick it is SO odd how it floods-the property on the other side is not flooding! You are correct.

There is a drain pipe that goes under the road so I guess it just backs up and I have a low area that gathers like a lake.

Such a mess.

on the plus side LMH, you've had experience with this before (I remember your previous pictures) so we don't have to worry about you driving off into rushing water and drowning

good luck - stay safe

Sheesh what a mess. Hopefully things will clear up soon for you!

On a side note: It looks like you have a very beautiful farm...even though it's submerged at the moment.

Yup-it looks the same doesn't it!

I just spoke with a friend at a nearby farm and they are evacuating to Wills Park.

What a mess.

As of now, the water is back down-only ankle deep at my gates.

My stomach is sick. I had my little pet cemetery around my pond. The markers are all washed away. It looks like the graves are still in tact. I hope so.

The GOOD news is when the water came down, my caretaker was able to get in and is staying in the barn apartment!

I have a second set of hands and feel much safer now!

Horses are all eating hay and not worried.:)

I, on the other hand, am visiting the adult beverage cabinet very soon.

I just looked at the weather and round 2 is coming in shortly.

The bigger problem is the sewage drain down at the road is now collapsed. Now the water will build and go over the road.

Or even worse-the whole road could collapse I guess.

Geezus...how scary for you!! I just sent you a PM about something completely unrelated but don't worry if you don't have time to respond for a while, sounds like things are a bit crazy over there!

LMH
Sep. 21, 2009, 05:58 PM
Things are really crazy everywhere.

Hunters Glen farm has evacuated to Wills Park. The barn had about 3 feet of water in the stalls.

When I last spoke (maybe close to an hour ago) they still had 8 horses to get out.

I don't know how much tack and equipment will be lost-but for those in our horse community, I am certain help will be needed.

Wishing you the best during this time. We are getting severe storms here in Oklahoma as we speak, but no flooding. However, every spring, sure enough, our pastures flood out. I do not worry about it getting to the horse or barn, and the water usually recedes in a few hours.

My heavens. On the news is a barn in Sandy Springs. They are tying horses to poles and posts along the road trying to get them all out.

In another apartment complex there are over 100 people trapped.

I also heard Huntcliff stables was evacuated.

What a nightmare.

Homes are just being destroyed all around Atlanta and surrounding counties.

Holy Freaking Cow...those pics are just awful! I hope the flooding lets up soon and your ponies are OK....all the other horse critters too. What a terrible mess.

I grew up just up the road from Johnstown, PA, where some terrible floods occurred with great loss of life. I was there in 1977 for the most recent one and remember the devastation. It is unbelievable what flood waters can do. :-(

Wasn't Atlanta in some horrible long term drought? I remember the lake down there was nearly empty a few years ago when I flew in and out.

LMH
Sep. 21, 2009, 08:15 PM
Yes it was! I think we can safely announce the drought is over!

Not to scare you, but my barn flooded at least once a year until they fixed the river drainage-anyway, check for snakes when the weather gets better, they get in trees, and will slither on anything. I was riding once and the horse reared and I was face to face with a black snake:eek: At the time I thought it was cool:cool:
I'm in Greenville, we did not get near as much as you guys have-

That's very scary! It looks like fencing inside a lake - very eerie. I'm SO sorry! And here I sit near Clt, NC, crying for rain. There is no justice where the weather is concerned.

Hubby's friend lives in Big Canoe and they are all flooded in. He's up high, but everyone at lake level and in the valley outside the gates is flooded. The major highway has been closed due to high water. Oh, they have had 20 inches in 24 hours in Big Canoe! And it's still raining!

How close/far are you from there?

I have a friend in Cherokee, GA on a horse farm and haven't heard from her yet. Do you know if they're getting flooded too?

LMH
Sep. 21, 2009, 09:13 PM
Yip, if you are talking Cherokee County-that is where I am.

Things are quiet now-waters have lowered but there are stronger storms on the way.

Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts...I am logging off for tonight-we have more storms coming and it could be a very long night for everyone.

There have been so many kind people that have worked all day evacuating horses and making sure horses and owners are safe. I know JSalem and her daughter worked a long hard day-I don't know the names of all the others.

We had damage but so far nothing like many other farms.

Again thank you to everyone...

If you are in the area of Wills Park I know there are many horses there and I am sure many people that can use some help!

Sep. 21, 2009, 09:48 PM

Luckily, my ponies are doing ok. Our road is collapsed half way. The firemen came by tonight and told us to pretty much stay put unless we have no other choice and need to leave. They think our road is unstable, if we get even a tad more rain. The Roads & Bridges people are sending out an engineer in the morning to see what they think. Luckily, we live on a hill. We couldn't evacuate the animals now even if we wanted to.

LMH- I thought of you right away. I know how your place floods. It sounds like you are ok. Good luck.

Well good morning all. Thankfully the rain was not nearly what was predicted. I heard a little start about 5-6am but nothing like yesterday.

The water has subsided completely on my farm-gates are clear and now only fence and bridge repair for us.

While the photos looked wild and I had a few hours of total freakout, we were very very fortunate.

I was watching the news last night and a family lost their 2yo son/grandson. He just got swept away with the waters.

Families have lost so much-homes, personal belongings and memories. I am sure family pets and more.

People were still trapped in some homes late last night.

I know there are horse people still in great need for help and support-even if only helping with night check on horses at Wills Park.

Again-thanks to the concern those offered...I am glad to report we are above water...but please keep the thoughts going for those facing bigger challenges!

The only story I could find was about Huntcliff-perhaps that is the one? My mom told me of the one story and it seems the two are related. If so, then the horses would have just been temporarily tied in a quiet neighborhood-not nearly as scary sounding...still scary enough!

I live about 20 min. from GIHP. Our area didn't get the flooding that the area north of Atlanta received although we did get a huge amount of rain. We just finished up a four day horse show there this Saturday and it rained throughout most of the show - even had to move a night session to daytime - everybody thought it was bad THEN (which was last Wednesday)! As to whether GIHP took evacuees, I haven't heard of any being stalled there but it might not have made it in the news if there are any there.

Your parents must live in Covington which is where I live. The big worry now is the Yellow River cresting on Milstead Avenue in Conyers tomorrow. They are estimating it will rise 20' and the all time record is 16.4 feet. If it does crest that high, there will be some serious evacuating going on in that area. Thankfully we are well away from that area.

I checked both neighborhood farms and while they had major water, horses and barns were fine and not evacuated - I'm shocked - but very glad! Don't know either BO's, but should have googled their #'s and offered my backyard for a temporary paddock.

Yikes!! I'm about 20 minutes trailer haul from the horse park and could take a few ponies if need be! There are also quite a few other barns in my area that I'm sure could take on a few ponies.

We also didn't seem to get hit too hard... don't know if we're far away from rivers or just a little bit more uphill, but...

email me at hbreauxdvm@yahoo.com if anyone needs help evacuating. I have a two horse trailer and would be willing to haul too!

When I drove to work tonight they had 138 blocked off, so hopefully the horse park and those area's are okay!

the Yellow River rose above our fence lines and gates - could not see them at all...there must have been 8-10 ft of water in our back paddocks and back yard Wednesday evening...and we only "back up" to some "bayou-type" wetlands turned pond thanks to beaver....

all is well today and tonight...but rain and flash floods forecast for tomorrow.
