I apologize if this is out of line or if this has alreayd been posted. Time is of the essence.
Huntcliff Equestrian Center in Sandy Springs (just north of Atlanta) is flooding due to all the rain we've had this past week. The facility is right on the Chattahoochee River, and 40+ horses need to be evacuated ASAP to safety at Wills Park Eq Ctr.
People and trucks/trailers are needed to get the horses out of immediate danger ASAP. Milton Fire Rescue's Large Animal Rescue team is coordinating. Please call Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency for more information or if you can help.

I'd love to help but don't have a trailer. Will pass this along to my friends who do. Glad to see Milton is allowing its team to help - even if the horses are across the county line. Good bureaucratic cooperation! :)

slowly they are getting the horses out, but they are having to walk thru several feet of water, and then up the hill to the waiting trailers.
Choco-thank you for the offer. I will keep you posted if they still need help later today. Hopefully they will be able to get a lot done before the next round moves in from AL and slams us (have a look at the radar at weather.gov YIKES!)

Somewhat... where our barn is is actually in between the flooding areas. We're thankful for that!!!
The attached pic is from Dallas Hwy, just before Hwy. 278.
I am worried about LMH, though, up in Canton. She just posted this on her Facebook page: FREAKING OUT! My fences are being torn away....if this gets worse I will need to move my horses and have no way to get them out.

where in canton is she and how many horses? our barn is in canton about 15 minutes from Wills park... my trainer said we have some stalls to spare.
also, she CAN call Milton's Large Animal rescue for help if needed... though I know they already have their hands full. Wills park is also open as an evac site for anyone who needs a place for horses/livestock.

My heart goes out to everyone with horses in danger. I am stuck at work and cannot leave, otherwise I would do what I could to help.
We are getting pounded here, with severe thunderstorms training one after another up GA 400 - massive amounts of rain, thunder, lightning, etc. We lost building power a few minutes ago and are running off the generator now.
I haven't seen this much rain dumped at one time in Georgia in 30 years.

Checking in from downtown Atlanta. I hope and pray everyone and their animals are safe. I do know of one cother who lost everything (thankfully her dogs are safe) this morning although I don't want to reveal her name at this point. She would appreciate prayers and jingles.
Please be safe out there. Don't blow past anyone waving you over, as I did on my way into the office this morning--they might be warning you that the roads are unsafe to travel. Fortunately for me, I was able to judge the depth of the water across the road by a nearly submerged tractor trailer that was swimming along.

Huntciff is right in the flood plain, but they can walk horses up into the subdivision, which is on the cliff above the flood plain. Fulton Co. fire dept. has rescued horses before, so has atlanta fire department. Lots of flood plain buliding in Atlanta, and I guess with all the drought people forgot about the Chattahoochee?

Chocomare - If you end up needing to evacuate please let me know, you're about 2 1/2 hours from me but I'm probably the only one in the area who doesn't need to stress about mine, YET(barn is in good dry location) so I will have the time. I'm not sure if I'd be able to get there due to roads, but I could try.

Oh sweetie, thank you for your offer but we're ok. Fortunately the barn where my mares are is on high ground...for the moment. We have more rain moving in from the west (http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=zoom&num=1&delay=15&rbscale=0.2673913043478261&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&ID=FFC&type=N0R&lat=33.87649918&lon=-84.86589813&label=Dallas,%20GA&showstorms=0&map.x=363.5&map.y=168.5¢erx=400¢ery=240&lightning=0&smooth=0&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0). Mr. C'Mare and I will be getting there about 6 tonight (gonna have to get creative in our drive home from work, since three of the ways we'd normally use are flooded out). We'll rebed the stalls and probably dig some more in the drainage trench to keep the water moving away.

Just talked to the BM where my horse is boarded - down the street from LMH. The driveway to the hay barn is flooding so she's moving as much hay as possible to the main barn since she soon won't be able to get to the hay. The pond & surrounding track is flooded but the barn & pastures are ok. BM said LMH can call if she gets desperate. We have only 1 open stall but the fields have run-ins. It makes me feel like a schmuck for being irritated that I can't ride today - there are much bigger problems. Stay safe y'all.

oh my gosh! THREE HOURS it took me to get home! ACK! I hope everyone is doing ok and are well on their way to moving anything 4 legged that has to be moved! And THANK YOU to who ever it was that called my husband's office... I don't know if these two ladies saw posts here or elsewhere, but you rock!
I believe all horses at Huntcliff were moved to a different location (initially was Wills Park, but yes, there is that creek which I hadn't thought about... hopefully any horses taken in are in the stalls at the higher elevations).
My trainer called me while I was stuck in my car on 575 half a mile from my exit to report that the drainage creek just outside her barn finally ran over and into the barn... she was heading over there to move tack, etc to higher ground. For now the ponies are in the paddocks up on the hill. *sigh*
We're well beyond the 100 yr flood stages, so its officially a record. Anywhere from 12-18 inches of rain last night, about 5-6 inches today, and we still aren't done. Peachtree Creek is just a couple feet shy of its record crest (which i believe was hurricane induced), and I believe Nancy Creek (both of these are in Buckhead/midtown Atlanta) is close to her record high as well. This is insanity.
On my residential street, there was so much water coming down the hill today that a car was floated into a ditch. And at Chez MAR, we can see evidence of some flash flooding almost to our back door. And we're on a hill.
Stay safe out there, everyone!

I believe that T Ed Garrison Arena in Clemson, SC (about 2 1/2 hours from Atlanta) is on the list of evacuation sites for natural disasters in SC. Might be an option for those looking for temporary housing for the horses. They have a few hundred stalls in 4 barns with electrical hook ups for trailers and several hotels within a few miles drive. They do have a TW show sceduled for this weekend but might have some stalls available if you give them a call.

This is unreal. A number of years ago, I was hit with massive flooding here on the farm. I raised the barn 3 feet after that and the new barn is also three feet higher than the paddock. What a blessing that is today.
We got 15 inches of rain overnight. The town of Trion was evacuated, the Chattooga river went over the levee and our water is now contaminated since it went way over the holding tanks at the water treatment facility. I filled everything I could yesterday so the horses have water for four or five days at least. I also have the ponds.
I took in a few evacuees today as it is till the water recedes some. Then they can all go back to there own pastures. The sad part, we are missing two teens who decided to try and swim in the new pools. Hopefully, they get out somewhere up stream.

Some major jingles and prayers needed for fellow COTHER (MMorgan mentioned also). Her home was destroyed today by the flooding. She's okay as are her four canine companions, but no immediate family and now- no home! Red Cross can't help her because of her dogs, we're hoping that tomorrow FEMA will set up and begin to help the residents that lost their homes and give some assistance! It's been one heck of a day and filled with grief..... We're all so far away and feel helpless for the helpless! OMG, what a nightmare for so many!!!

This is awful. We are in Cherokee County too and have only lost 1/2 our road. The firemen were knocking on doors with updates and telling us to stay put. Thankfully, the ponies are safe. We couldn't evacuate them now, if we wanted to. My house is on high ground, but it is a total mess out there.

OH no, wait, MMorgan wasn't flooded out where she is, was she? And her horses are east of Atlanta, so maybe ok there? Hey, the atlanta humane society will keep dogs FREE in emergencies (and for the street people) or call my old vets at Braircliff and see if they have room. Not me, Carole, but I appreciate your concern. (No flooding in Grant Park...yet). It's a mutual friend of Lisa and mine, she lives north of Atlanta where a lot of the evacuations happened.
I guess right now, she needs prayers mostly.
My barn didn;t even get any rain yesterday, which is why my horses were turned out, and one of my mares managed to injure herself. She's up at UGA right now.

Whew! I was thinking you and your dog would be helping evacuate the zoo down the road! Herding llamas. Hope your horse is OK. And glad that you and your horses are OK.
In 1994 when I was still living in Atlanta, we got the big flood then (but this is bigger:eek:) and all the cemeteries gave up their bodies.
Hope you all dry out. We all wanted the drought to break, but not all at once, the lakes will be overflowing and they will have to open the dam at Buford.
Meanwhile here on the coast, we've had a lot of rain this summer, but only a little light rain the last 5 or 6 days. All of our excess rain runs off into the ocean.

We're fine out in Paulding County. Took us 2.25 hours to get home from Marietta last night. Raided TSC for shavings, rain gear and new boots for me. Did the four stalls and rebedded everyone, filled the mangers with hay and the tubs with water. Miss Penny Mare wanted out but I had to tell her, "No P. You want to stay in. Trust me!"
Fortunately, they can go back out this morning since the rain we're expecting isn't supposed to be near as bad--just hit and miss.
Soooooo thankful that my friend and I dug that drainage trench in the back paddock, though. It made the difference between a soggy paddock and flooded stalls.
Please pray for SpotNnotFarm's friend, who had a horse swept away out in Carroll County. :(

Does anyone know how the local authorities are dealing with loose horses that may have been swept away or escaped from their pastures during the flood?
My cousin is in Villa Rica, GA in Carroll County, just over the county line from Douglas County. I just got an email from her this morning that her Lipp/Andy cross gelding was swept away in the flood and has not yet been found. Two other horses were also swept away, one was found alive on a nearby hilltop and the other unfortunately died (it belonged to a 13 year old girl).
She has searched the area around her barn, talked to all the neighbors, posted flyers and still has no information. Because her barn is near a river (not sure which one), she is very concerned that he may have been carried some distance away before landing.
I posted a notice for her on the Missing Horses board, but thought I'd ask here as well.
My thoughts are with everyone affected by this horrible trajedy.

I just wanted to send jingles to everyone dealing with flood displacement, and also put it out there that the farm where I keep my horse in Columbia, SC, often does layover boarding in several pastures that we have. Glad things seem to be stabilizing.
For those with lost animals, start with calling your local humane society first to find out if they have designated "collection" points, for lack of a better word for found/loose animals. If you cannot get a response, try local PD or Fire Depts (though please be patient with everyone... emergency responders are overwhelmed sa I am sure you can all imagine). You may even want to call local vets to see if they have heard of any collection points.

One of the many dangers when it floods like this is that some horses get caught up in submerged fencing when they are trying to swim to safety.
When we had the "flood of the century" in 1994, the people who had horses on northside drive right by the soccer fields did not move their horses up the hill into their yard, and one horse got trapped in the fence by Peachtree Creek. Our fire department saved the horse.
I hope that the horses who were caught up in the flood can make it to safety.
