We went to an area tack store, and one of the saddles they had was an Avalon. It seemed ok, but I'd never heard of them. It was about $600 new for an entry level CC. Does anyone know anything about these saddles? Who are they made by?

What tack store? I believe (from reading your other posts) that we are roughly in the same area. I recently saw an Avalon bridle and thought it was more on the plastic side...less on the "able to absorb oil" side. Did the saddle's leather look nice?

They're made by Smith Worthington. http://www.smithworthington.com/saddles/closecontact/Avalon/avalon.htm I have one of their higher priced saddles and like it very much. I don't know anything about the Avalon, but there is some general info on the SW website.

It was at CM Tack in KC. The leather seemed ok - not awesome, but certainly I've seen worse.

I don't think this could possibly be a SW Avalon - they're WAY more than $600 new. I have one, from 17 years ago that was way more than $600 new then, and there's no way I'd describe it as just "ok" - even now I get crazy compliments on it. It's gorgeous!

I agree. The Brand was Avalon, not the model. Here is about the only link I could find online to them.

It seemed fairly well balanced, but I'm not sure I want a) a brand new saddle or b) an "off" brand saddle for DD.
