I must say that I was so impressed with the mounted police that I saw yesterday. We had a football game in our brand new stadium so they brought down a couple mounted policemen to help patrol the area. There were lots of drunk people, a lot of traffic, lots of noise, etc... And the horses were just so solid. I know my guys would have run all the way back home  Just thought I'd give them two thumbs up :)

As an officer, horse owner and currently training with several other officers to have a ready mounted unit should our department decides it could use one, it is wonderful to hear that another unit is doing a good job. It takes quite a bit of training to get a horse solid enough to work in a crowded area or you get lucky and find a really solid horse to begin with (somewhat rare). If you get a second, jot a quick note to the Chief of Police or Sheriff about what you thought of the unit. It always makes officers feel good to know someone appreciated them doing their jobs well.

Judging by your location description and the new stadium I am going to guess you are referring to Minneapolis??

If you really want to see those guys in action sometime, head downtown at bar closing. Those ponies don't flinch at anything. An finishing up college now with plans to become a police officer. I would love to someday be chosen to serve in a mounted division, but I know I'll have to pay my dues elsewhere first.

My first guess would've been St. Paul, given that the stadium is on the east bank.

Oops! You would be correct. I guess I'm just so used to the Gophers playing at the dome, Mpls was the first thing to pop into my head.

Hahaha the new stadium was in Akron, Ohio :) Minnesota would have been a good guess since they just opened (are opening?) a new stadium. They're athletic director is actually our athletic director now. *hums it's a small world after all* We just built a new stadium after having one off campus for over 60 years, I believe. It was super exciting!

The horses were definitely super brave and the sheriffs/cops looked so relaxed amidst all the noise and excitement. It was so nice to see.

Mounted police units can be very effective at both crowd control and routine patrol. But they don't come with a a bunch of mondo kool electronics, don't cost near as much a "muscle car cruiser," and are decidedly "low tech." So, like Rodney, they don't get much respect. Nor do they get much funding.

I doubt there's any stimulus money for them, either.

Perhaps it's because I have horses and know horses but I think they're way cooler than our police who ride around on their bicycles, motorcycles, and ATVs on game days patrolling the parties  I think it's because I know how my two guys would react if I tried to ride them in the city

I know they recently stopped ours in Cleveland (I think it was Cleveland anyways) because they couldn't afford it anymore. It was very sad for a lot of the guys from what I understand.

Definitely write a few letters to applaud your mounted unit!!

Boston (MA) recently closed its mounted unit down, due to lack of funding. I understand that it had been the oldest of these units in the country. A huge loss, in the opinion of everyone except those lawmakers who felt it was not worth keeping in the budget.
