I'm looking for some explanations of how to do hunter braiding. I've found a couple vidoes but would like more details.

I event so I do about 15 braids with rubberbands or yarn depending on how much time I have and my mood.

I am with you! I usually do buttons with waxed thread, but I would love to learn how to do the hunter plaits. I think that they look really nice when done properly. (Which I cannot do!)

Find out when your local H/J show are and show up REAL early on show day. Find braiders and watch and talk. Most are willing to help others learn if you're willing to put in the time. Most really good braiders have learned from other good braiders. It's not rocket science...

Not rocket science, but braiders have little tricks and secrets that help them get beautiful braids. THAT is what makes talking to them worthwhile!

Plus, there are some things in the procedure that you just have to see done in person. Video has a hard time capturing them.

I braided my first two ponies yesterday, I have braided before ( years ago) but always quit about 1/3 of the way through, its not easy! but it is a skill worth learning, mine came out ok, it was a local show and they looked as good as most others.
Practice, then practice some more, the key is getting them tight from the top, if you can get the first 3- 4 plats tight then it is easier to KEEP the braid tight.
I did watch the Lucky braids video and it was very very helpful! I actually rented a copy from the library!

There is no substitute for learning in person from someone who braids well.... but of the videos, the Lucky Braids one is the best. Though I vary from her technique a little here and there. EVERYONE learns to braid slightly differently.

I agree with vxf. If you have already braided a good bit, trying to change your personal "hand memory" to copy Ruthann's is too hard and time consuming. Just incorporate some of her tips. But if you are truly just starting out, you can copy her technique. Only problem is playing the DVD at the barn where you can actually learn as you listen!
