Just curious if there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that compounded omeprazole actually does anything.
How about treating with ranitidine?

I have had many horses do well on compounded omeprazole. Some it did not work on. I always use the real stuff ie gastroguard or ulcerguard for at least a week if I am doing a trial to see if the horse has ulcers and if the result is favorable I treat for a full month before then trying alternatives. Otherwise you won't know if the compounded stuff just didn't work on your horse or ulcers weren't the problem.

We treated my horse with Ranitidine and Sucralfate for 3 weeks. The 4th week the only reason I switched to Gastrogard was for convenience - I was going out of town and didn't want to burden our barn mgr. with dosing the other meds 3x per day.
The Ranitidine had my horse eating his feed within 48 hours (he had stopped completely). After 7 days, he was eating faster than I had ever seen him eat. Once treated, we haven't had a recurrence since, and we are using no ulcer supplements. So Ranitidine worked great for us!

I treated my TB with a very bad case of ulcers with ranitidine and it completely healed them. We scoped before and after and it was amazing. I did it 3x a day and stayed very close to the 8 hour window but it worked beautifully for around $200. It might be even less now as that was 9 years ago.

I treated my 10 y/o OTTB with compounded omeprazole paste for 6 weeks. Did 2 weeks of the full tube per day, then 2 weeks of 1/2 tube per day, then 2 weeks of 1/4 tube daily. The tubes were $18, so it cost me about $450. Worked wonders - he was grouchy and belligerent about food before, and within 48 hours I could groom him and everything while he was eating, and he was nowhere near the dragon he was. We've been maintaining for about 4 months on UGuard powder now and he's still doing great.

Im am currently on week 5 of 6 of treatment with ranitidine for my horse. It has worked- I have a completely different, much happier horse! We did 20 300mg tablets twice a day for 4 weeks, and then 15 300mg pills twice a day for 2 weeks. I will follow up with a week of gastrogard to make sure we got everything. I just can't describe how much happier my horse is!
