View Full Version : Measuring a blanket for a horse...not a horse for a blanket

This is something I never thought about until the situation came up. A friend of mine snagged me a Pessoa Tundra blanket from the barn she works part-time at (during a collective barn-cleaning session) because she knows that I'm looking for one. My guy finally out grew his 74" last year :-P The tag is either torn out or worn so we have no idea what size it is.

I know how to measure a horse for a blanket, but I cannot find anywhere how to measure a blanket for a horse! I'd hate to pay to ship it across country (she's in Washington state) only to find out that it won't fit. Is there a particular spot that would measure the 74", 78" or whatever the blanket size would be?

I tried measuring my current blanket as I would image it on the horse, but the measurements were way off (my 74" measured 78")

I'll bump this for you because it's a good question and I'd also like to know. I had this problem earlier in the season and google was no help at all.

Sorry I don't have the answer.

I too would love to know the answer. Blanket tags seem to come off all the time. I solve the problem in a very round about way. I put the unknown blanket on a horse whose size I know. If it fits I assume the blanket is that size. If it doesn't fit I look for another size horse and try again. Not very scientific but it works if you have access to lots of horses.
Someone please tell me an easier way.

Put it on the horse, see if it fits. Other than that, maybe call the maker and see how they measure?

I would take a blanket that still has the tags on and do an experiment. Put the blanket flat on the ground and measure the length from the withers and from the chest. I can't imagine there are too many other options, it would at least get you close!

Isn't it usually from the withers to the tail?
That's how the European sizes go. For the underlength you add 50cm.
So a 145cm blanket has a 195cm underlength (from the chest to the butt).
