Crushing Medication

I am looking for the best way to crush pills. The mortar and pestle just doesn't cut it when you have a lot to smush. I have heard of using a coffee grinder but i tried using a mini chopper/ food processor and it was way too powdery so you end up wasting the medicine that is stuck on the sides.

Does anyone have a favorite type of grinder that keeps it from getting too powdery? Links would be great!

Put the pills in an envelope and use a hammer.

Coffee grinder is easiest way to go, esp. with large quantities of pills. They're not that expensive, hit Wally or some such....

I second the coffee grinder. After using a couple of cheap ones, I bought a good one and have never looked back. Takes a few seconds and the meds are powder fine.

I put the pills in the 'container' for the mini chopper with some pig food, which is basicly corn meal, then use the chopper. The meal keeps the powder from getting too fine and stuck in the processor, also, the horse enjoys the corn meal and will eat the medicine more easily. You may need to cover the top with a teatowel to keep the particles from flying out if the processor doesn't have a lid.

i do it between to big spoons then make a jam sandwich for the neddy to eat it

I dissolve pills in a little water, then wet a handful of grain, and then mix with regular meal for finicky eaters.

For the voracious WB, I dissolve pills in a little water, add a Coke, and he drinks it up.

I decided to stick with the hammer and baggie method after I killed a 'pill crusher' and burned up the mini coffee grinder :rolleyes:

I've done the hammer with folded piece of paper method when I couldn't find the "pill crusher" (which is useless anyway).

When one mare needed a two week course of meds, I took my own coffee grinder to the barn and spent an hour grinding the doses one at a time and putting them in labeled wax paper bags (no static - you don't get lots of powder clinging to the plastic!)

And in a pinch I've also done the dissolve-in-water trick, then added some molasses and stirred into feed.

Raid an antique store for a very old, very used small Cast Iron Frying Pan! Place pills on hard, level surface...press firmly down and twist twice. Voila'! Crushed pills :D

I wrap them in the paper from my feed bags (it's doubled and plastic lined) and use THE HAMMER. Some pills like SMZ's easily dissolve in water.

I use a hammer and put the pills right in the food bucket. Crush them into a fine powder, dust off hammer head (make sure it is clean pre-crushing!) and then put a bit of warm water in the bucket, add grain, and then nothing is wasted.

When I have to crush pills I put them in a zip lock bag and smash with a hammer(or anything hard). This way I can even do several batches at a time.

Grind in something that can get wet on the inside, and use a little water to rinse out any too-fine powder that's left. Since I usually have to make the feed wet in order to get all the powder eaten, that just fits right in.

I use baggie and a hammer. In a pinch the backside of a brush will also crush pills.:D

Coffee grinder AND add some pelleted feed. It will still be a bit powdery. Wait a couple of minutes, dump meds into feed container and add more pelleted feed to coffee grinder to get the last of the powdery substances out. Takes maybe 5 minutes total and you can be doing other things in the meantime. I've been doing it for yrs. Good luck. :)
