View Full Version : Eventing issue -- sad to see

that at the O'connor barn that the horses, or at least some of them, don't even have windows to the outside. Per the picture in that issue. That horse looked like it was in solitary. Very sad for a facility that 'has it all.'

We were there last year looking for a horse. All I remember thinking is when I die if I am reincarnated as a horse, the O'Connors is where I'd like to stay. It's a first class facility.

1st of all....what makes that an "eventing issue"? Only eventers would ever have a barn that did not have lighting that suited you? How bizarre.
2ndly...horses seem to like a bit of a cave for their bedroom.
Also, if that is the worst thing to ever happen to a horse....
[edit] You should find something else to be sad about.

1st of all....what makes that an "eventing issue"? Only eventers would ever have a barn that did not have lighting that suited you? How bizarre.
It was the annual COTH Eventing Issue, with a photo spread on the barn.
From the photos it looked like the stall doors opened to the outside, actually.
But I do know plenty of good barns that do not have outside windows in the stalls. The horses spend most of their time turned out, anyway.
Not sure why the OP wants to pick this bone.

I still stand by my first statement....[edit]

Hahaa, my horses all have windows and only stall guards across their doors Does that make them happier than the O'Connor horses? I don't know. I DO know my horses can see all sorts of terrifying things-hay fields that blow in the wind, scary rocks, the water moving in the river-out their windows and have to spook at them!! I think I'd be happier with no windows and maybe my poor horses would sleep better!;)

Jimminy crickets, we just had 21 horses starve to death down the road and this (windows for horses) makes people sad.

I spent some time helping a huge horse rescue out. I saw some sad things, like horses dying in peoples' arms because they had no food or water when we found them. The O'Connor's barn is NOT sad and I highly doubt their horses are sad either.

I have been there -- don't recall what the stalls looked liked exactly, but the horses have fantastic turnout and seemed extraordinarily well cared for. Sorry, OP, but this is a nonstarter.

I have been there on several occasions and the horses are hardly suffering because they don't have windows to the outside. The barn the O'Connors are in is a beautifully restored old bank barn. Karen's horses are "downstairs" in stalls that are built into the hill. It is basically a shed row, and the stalls are big, bright, roomy and all are open to the outside. David's horses were "upstairs", and the stalls are big, bright and airy. They are all open to the aisle and the couple that were up there seemed very happy. The whole place is really cool, actually. I was in the barn at Stonehall (Jackie Mars' barn down by her house) quite often, too, and that was is just fabulous and luxurious, but I actually like the one the O'Connors are in up top much better. It has a cool, relaxed, homey feeling to it, while Stonehall gives you the feeling of "don't touch anything...you might break it!"
I'm gonna guess the OP has a gripe with the OCs, and is just looking for things to be cranky about. Say what you will about them, I know there are a lot of people who have a beef with DOC or the whole OCET thing in general, but the horses are spectacularly well cared for, and their accomadations aren't lacking in the least...even if they don't have windows to the outside.
FWIW, my horses have little windows to the outside...they spend 99% of their time, though, hanging there heads out in the aisles and causing trouble in the barn. They really don't care about the outside windows.

The CIA used to use the O'Connors' barn as a black site when Guantanamo got crowded. Are you saying you weren't aware of this?

Good lord. My barn has stalls in the aisle with no windows, and outside stalls that open onto the arena and my front pasture (but no windows). My horses would WAY rather be in the aisle stalls (people to beg treats from!). But they are turned out half the time anyhow.
Windows = something else to get injured on, if you ask me!!

My horses have run in stalls and are essentially out 24/7. BUT the way the stalls are set up, there are 3 that are bright and airy, and one that is a dark cave. More often than not there will be THREE of them crammed in that tiny (it's 10 x11) dark stall, snoozing, happy as clams. I find it hot and claustrophobic, but they choose it.
Seems to me a hard working horse who gets plenty of exercise and turnout time would welcome a quiet dark corner to be left alone to nap for a chunk of the day.
There are far sadder things that happen to horses on a dialy basis, IMO.

The place where my mare is boarded has a choice -- stalls with windows, stalls without windows, and stalls with small run-outs. Some horses freak out at anything going on outside, and they get the "interior" stalls. All horses get turn-out, anywhere from 2 hours to 8 hours depending on the horse and its needs -- except for a couple of the run-out horses, who get too goofy in regular turnout and hurt themselves.
My mare adjusted well in a windowed stall, though the tractor was parked right outside and for the first few weeks she spent most of her time staring out the window at the tractor; if a horse can be suspicious, that's what she was.
Different stalls for different horses seems to be the key.

I see a train a comin' she's a comin' roun the bend. . . . Too early for my Chardoneigh:(.
Speaking of Men In Black, didn't they shoot all the really spooky stuff at Karen's? I mean it's the perfect place (according to some.) I've never been there but, I 'm not letting a little thing like that stop me from jumping in.

There are people who, actually WANT THAT; While in Indiana I saw numerousQH barns with no windows high walls and little to no bedding; these horses were turned out:eek: in summer with neoprene from nose to tail, God forbid anything marr their coats or tails;I would be far more concerned about those horses; even the indoor arena had no natural:no: light, very dark:( and gloomy I was at QH/ paint a breeding farm where the babies were kept in dark, stinking cells :mad:no sunlight/ fresh air until they went to their first show; to me THAT is CRUELTY:yes:

Compared to where I lived (and I was on the home team!) when I was in Guantanamo for 3 months, a stall at the OCET barn would've been the lap of luxury! Our building did have a window, I must say in all fairness, though--it was about 12" square, and the 20 of us sharing the building as our "home" got to look out of it any time we wanted.

Ah. I thought it was a problem with the sport of eventing, too, not a special issue of the magazine. Doh.
That said, most barns I know have windows or not based on structural and architectural reasons - like it used to be a dairy barn, or the stalls all open in vs. out, or some stalls are on an interior wall, etc.
The only time I think it is important or heard it discussed is when a horse is in on stall confinement by themselves (due to illness or injury). Then they always get a window-out stall so they can watch the other horses.

Well, I must be an idiot too because I thought the OP was referring to a problem with eventing as well.

Reviving this because -- oh lordy -- I was closer to the truth than I ever knew.
I had the right idea but the wrong facility. The actual one was in Vilnius, Lithuania.

My horse has no windows either. GASP. He's outside for 10-12 hours everyday. If he had windows it would be very cold in the winter here. Plus... it's not like he has a room with a view. He's so friggin happy at his nice little no frills and no windows barn. It does my heart good to see him so happy.

Well you can also connect the dots - or is it M&Ms - that Stonehall Farm owned by Jackie Mars. It is likely subject to the same cloak and dagger veiled secrecy as Mars Inc. The confections industry didn't call the company's fortress building and uber tight lipped operations at 6885 Elm Street in McLean, VA office "The Kremlin" for nothing ;) I bet that place too had no windows as well!
