We have always fed the dreaded coastal here. But with the drought my hay guy will not get the 2nd cutting even. A guy nearby brought in what he says is wonderful prairie hay, I can't remember from where. Miss. or Missouri: One of the M states anyway. Also Brome (sp?) from Kansas. Those of you who feed these hays, are you happy with them? Which would you choose? I will go check the hay out this weekend. I guess good hay of that type looks about like good hay of any type. Got to decide quickly or that is gone also! What about Tifton 85? Thanks for any help you can give.

I've fed brome several times and have always been happy with it. It's usually a fairly broad-leafed, sweet smelling, well accepted hay.

Prairie hay here is usually very fine. And often full of weeds.

Brome is an excellent hay - you will love the way your horse loves it and uses it - the Prairie grass hay looks good but not one of mine --- all ages and sexes and types- breeds would touch it -- Go with Brome -- Kansas brome this year is very good --- almost as good as the BEST YEAR 2002 cutting !!! Delish !!!!! PM me if you need to check prices - get samples and try them on your horses before purchasing ~ they will confirm Brome -* I do not know Tifton 85 .

Mine love brome, have hated the coastal since we moved here from Colorado.

Tried the prairie hay but it got a hooves down.

They are thrilled when the local feed store gets in the alfalfa/grass mixes from
Colorado and other parts out of west. No waste....

I've got Kansas brome this year for the 1st time--used to be able to get good prairie here, but no more so used bermuda for past 7-8 years. This year both local hay guys I use had no 1st cuttings, so...switched to the brome. I'm trying to get over the difference in 'looks' compared to the bermuda--it's just not pretty hay IMO, although my horses looove it. It also smells different than bermuda, so I'm getting used to that too.

prairie grass is the common name for those things growing with only God's Love west of the Mississippi and east of the Rockies

Being IN Kansas, we feed Kansas Brome all the time. Lots of it grown within a few miles, in fact. The only "bad" hay we've had recently was not the hay's fault - I'm sure it didn't want to get moldy. My girls are fat and happy on it.

Can't beat Kansas brome. I'll use prairie grass for the horse who is prone to laminitis; brome is the good stuff.

I'm pretty sure Tifton 85 is a coastal bermuda hybrid.
