View Full Version : T-mobile MyTouch... HR, I swear!

I have been secretly jealous of my friends with their iPhones lately, mainly because I want apps. They seem like fun. All those little buttons to push and things to do. But iPhones are too expensive for the service, so I can't justify it.

But now T-mobile, that I'm already with, has the MyTouch. It's been almost three years since I got an upgrade, so I could get it pretty cheap. And they've got Cat Stevens singing in the commercials.

But the real question for me is... are there any equestrian-related apps that work on MyTouch? I know there are a few out there now for iPhone, like the dressage tempo one and show packing list one and so on... but I don't know if those would work on MyTouch as well. And if I try to do a search for "my touch+horse+application" it pulls up a shocking variety of websites that don't have much to do with what I'm looking for. d;

Huh, I didn't kow they had equine apps for the iPhones! Whoa, I guess those commercials that say, "There's an appp for everything!" weren't kidding. :eek:
I'm not electronically inclined at all...I horrify my family by having a cell phone that's just a cell phone. Meaning it calls out, gets calls and can take photos. It might do more, but I have no idea. :winkgrin: Although one of my older daughters had an iPhone we got her a while back. She just got rid of it and switched to the Blackberry Curve through Verizon and likes it MUCH better. She said the iPhone was way cool and had all the fun apps, but cost a bloody fortune every month. All those apps apparently charge you and it got to the point where her phone bill for iPhone, a few apps and internet on it was over $200 per month. Now she says she can do the same stuff with her Curve for lot less.

I have no idea, but you're going to have better luck searching for apps if you use ANDROID instead of "myTouch."

LOL, I'm sure "equine+application+android" will bring up a few funny pages, but not nearly as out there as "my touch." d;

MB, that's what I've heard about iPhones--the monthly service charge is what is so ridiculous. I know the MyTouch and Curve and so on have less applications, but maintaining them seems so much cheaper...

My phone that I've had for three years now has a camera, makes calls, and has been stepped on by my horse without damage. I'm a little loath to part with it. d;

I don't know what the hell this app does, but it comes up right away with a search: http://www.androlib.com/android.application.jp-rbweb-horseracing-jDzA.aspx

Android is all open source and can be developed on any platform. Perhaps we have some developers here who would take requests. I think it's all in java (that's what the dev guys at work tell me?)

Wait, there's an Iphone clone for T-Mobile?

YAY!

Merry Christmas to me!

Oh, it's also my understanding that you can really only search the android market fully FROM the phone. Have you searched there for apps?

I have a few users with this phone and it chaps my ass that you have to pay $20-$25 for an app to make it fully integrate with MS Exchange, and you have to pay for an additional app to be able to view/edit MS Office docs. IMO, that functionality should be built in out of the box with a business device.

I have no idea what the hell that does either... great marketing on their part!

I have never actually used one of these fancy phones before so I have no idea how the platform/compatability/java things work... I may need a phone that is smart enough to tell me itself, in simple, colour-coded language, what will work on it, for free, and be useful and applicable to my life forever and ever.

I would also like it to dust my wainscoting, weed the garden, and clean my gelding's sheath. Do they have an app for that?

Is there an app for Appys?

Sorry, I've had a lot of wine and am going to bed now...

Snort.

Well, I can tell you that the one non-IT user I have with the phone right now likes it a lot. And finds it easy to use. I'm not so sure about the dusting. The touchscreen only interface does get some getting used to, however. If you think you might want a tactile keyboard, the G1 has the same functionality and has a keyboard. And costs less.

I also think that since the android os is open source and can be developed on any platform, that we are going to see A LOT--A LOT--of apps for it.

I like the fact that the phone is made by HTC, too. I have a lot of data phones in the enterprise that are HTC and they hold up well. (I also like Samsung devices.)

I manage about 200 wireless lines for the company I work for, so I suppose I know something about cell phones. (I guess?)

So if it's an expense issue, get an iPod Touch. It's basically an iPhone that can't make phone calls (but it does have wireless internet, so if you're in range of a wireless router, you can do internet etc.) I have a Touch and love it, but I am a loyal Verizon customer and don't care to pay for an iPhone.

As for the apps, most of them are $4 or less. Apiece. Many of the good ones are free. So unless your friend has dramatically bad self control, she shouldn't be going broke on those.

With the iPod Touch, do you pay a monthly service fee for the internet?

That's good to know about the Android, Simkie... thank you. (:

No. It's an MP3 player with wireless capability, not a phone. It does not have "mobile internet service" from a cell phone provider. If you're in range of a wireless network to which you have access, the iPod Touch can get internet. Think of it as a very very very portable laptop computer.

I have played with the "other" app-phones besides the iPhone. Frankly, there is no comparison. 15,000+ apps for the iPhone versus about 800 for the Android. Unless I were one of those people who was addicted to having internet *everywhere*, like at the bus stop or the barn or whatever, I would just get a regular phone and let the iPod Touch mollify your iPhone envy.

It just hooks into your home internet connection, or any wireless connection (like at Starbucks or whatever). It doesn't use a cellular (3G) network. And, of course, you can't make or receive calls :)

Anything that uses a cellular network is going to have a fee attached. If you get a web enabled T-Mobile phone you'll have to pay for the data plan. I think it's about $35/month.

I agree with this. Android's a lot newer but I think once it's really out there it will be very competitive.

Being an uber-geek, open-source freak and (shall we say) somewhat cost-conscious when it comes to cell service, I'm looking forward vastly to the release of the SciPhone N12 (http://www.mysciphoneshop.com/sciphone-n12-series-smartphone-p-32.html?zenid=cclctp9gdllnkbdvkigd48c313), which will be SciPhone's first genuine Android phone. I just got their i68+ and am thrilled with it, so there's no way I'm not getting an N12.

Because SciPhones are unlocked, you can (with some programming) use it w/ any carrier on any service plan that broadcasts on one of its 4 GSM bands, so I get almost all the iPhone functionality I need for... $100 a year. :D :cool:

To keep this HR: I spent ALL last night converting Episode 1 of Horse Power: Road to the Maclay to run on SciPhone and lo and behold it WORKS!! Quattro's vids look cute on there too. And I'm reading Xenophon's On Horsemanship on there as an eBook (there are a lot of interesting horsey eBooks on Project Gutenberg).

I have no idea if these would be compatible with the MyTouch, but googled "iphone apps for horses" and got this website

No, the iPhone apps are not cross-compatible with the myTouch. Different operating systems.
