View Full Version : Just for fun, nice black or nearly black AHS stallions?
Perfect Pony

So my little G-line mare who I may breed in the spring has officially got a "thing" for black or nearly black horses. I thought it was just a coincidence but nope, she is in love with black horses. Her best turnout buddy is a Frisian mare she is so in love with they can't stop grooming each other. Her favorite boyfriend was a black Hanoverian named "Blacky" and now she's totally head over heels for the new black TB gelding who just came into the barn....
So who are some nice black or nearly black stallions I could pair her with for a nice dressage prospect that could play in the hunter ring?

Bloodlines? What would you like to improve?:)
I'm a huge fan of Redwine, but I don't know if he'd give you a dressage foal. :)

DeLaurentis is the first that comes to mind. He could give you either a hunter or dressage foal. He is not homozygous for black though, so you could get black, bay or chestnut depending on what your mare carries.

Sorry, I already posted most of her info a couple times, but here's her pedigree again. I got great suggestions before but none of them are near black but Don Principe.

Seriously? I wouldn't change a single thing about her except maybe put a couple inches of height on her, she's only 15.1!

My 5 year old by De Laurentis is a chestnut with chrome on only the left side  His mother was a chestnut as well.
Along with him what about Sinatra Song?

I know this is a for-fun thread, but won't the breeding be A/I anyway? She sadly won't get to flirt and Loff Mr. Black Stallion :/ So you can use any color! ;)

I think it is true horses have preferences. My grey mare mentored two young horses, took them on trails, etc. Now every time they see a grey they lose concentration and start getting lookey. Yesterday my young grey saw another grey and thought she was her mother by her antics.

15 years ago, I had a friend who's pony stallion loved paints and dark bays, ok with chestnuts and was just out on greys....I swear he'd give you the "do I have to??" look when you took a grey mare to him. ;) LOL!

Fabuleux is close enough to black for me :) Though not true black, after seeing him in person, he's pretty darn black looking
I think that you absolutly could get a Dressage foal with Redwine, though he's marketed as a hunter. I've seen him in person and saw him trotted out in hand, with the right mare, I have no doubt that he could produce a super Dressage foal. When he's ridden like a hunter, he moves like a hunter, as most horses do. He's not AHS as of right now though.
Some other AHS blacks I can think of are:
Rubignon
Escudo II
Witerprinz
Bugatti Hilltop
Donatelli (not sure if there's frozen though...)
Sinatra Song

Oh course, I am just being silly I know. It was just so funny. And she's so in heat right now I cannot ride her anywhere near either of the black gelding on the property without her raising her tail and arching her neck.
Sinatra Song is pretty, but I know GG's mother did not cross well with Sandro lines.

I absolutely LOVE my Escudo II filly! My mare is 15.1 as well and the filly should be around 15.3h or so. I can't say enough about how easy she to is train. At 6 weeks she was a perfect little pony for her first trim by the farrier. I clip her bridle path once a week and she just stands there and lets me do it. She's 2 months and trots on the lead easily staying right with me. She stands in the cross ties next to momma and gets groomed, bathed or anything else I want to do with her. She's very independent and curious about things and always wants to be first in line. I know these are little things, but she's always game for something new and learns fast. All that said, she's very correct and already showing a lovely trot and canter, plus she's very pretty with huge eyes and tippy ears. Can you tell I'm extremely pleased with her ;). Oh - she's bay out of a liver chestnut. But I've seen lots of blacks by him out of all colors.

Hmm.... I was going to suggest Sonntagskind since he's newly AHS approved but if you don't like the Sandro Hit bloodlines for your mare, guess not.

Highlife Farm has a BEAUTIFUL Holsteiner stallion named Connecticut. Their website has been down FOREVER and the AHHA for some reason decided to go with a giant PDF stallion roster that is nearly impossible to navigate quickly this year so it's hard to see much about him - but he's from L-lines on the dam side and Calato by Capitol I on the sire side. They have him listed as dark bay but I worked there many years ago and he's pretty much black.

Second the Fabuleaux suggestion. We've a 2009 filly by Fabuleaux who's drop dead beautiful and the favorite of the whole farm (picture a bunch of pony camp kids cuddling her all at once). He may not be true black, but if her ears are any indication, she's going to shed bay pony fur into "close enough to black" for me!" Unless 2 of our 5 gray out later, we'll have 4 "damned close to black" this year including 3 from our own freshman homebred colt!

I have an Escudo II out of a BIG/Tall G line mare. She's not liver chestnut, but red chestut with lots of bling and her filly is a pretty dark bay with a big blaze. My E II filly is just how you describe, pretty to look at and very easy to work with. She should mature to about 16.3 or so.

I'm not disagreeing :) It is fun!
Possibilities from the AHS roster that I think could produce an all around prospect:
Black Tie (16.3)
Devon Heir (not sure on height)
Fabuleux(16.3)
Glorioso Noir (17.1)
Rubignon (16.2)

I know that you didn't luv the Sandro Hits, but Soprano is black and Contender on the bottom side!

I've looked through the AHS site just for fun, planning to breed a G-Line, Graf Goetz mare in 5-6 years when she retires from eventing. I have to agree with the Fabuleaux suggestion, he's on my list. There's also Windfall to consider.
He's not an AHS stallion, but my wife loves Sea Accounts.

I should have added with my original Fabuleux comment that I love my 2009 Fabuleux filly :) Everything about her is so much what I wanted. Her trot is her dad's in every way, shape, and form. So much freedom and elasticity. Her canter is awesome too, though both Fabuleux and the dam have super canters. Walk is also very good. She is an absolute sweetheart too. I couldn't be more pleased. I definately reccomend Fabuleux  I've got another breeding to him for next year. I'm not sure which mare I'll use it on yet, though I'll likely repeat this cross. My filly will be a very dark bay I think. She's rather hairy still (July baby, no time really to shed out), but where she has shed out is black, with the exception of her face, it's dark bay. I can't wait to see her next year when she's shed out. Her dam was a bay.
I know another Fabuleux out of a dark bay mare that is totally black.

Fabuleux!!! I have two by him a 3 year old and a two year old.. They are simply wonderful. So easy to be around and willing to do whatever you ask... Both my girls are taller than their dams.

Donarweiss is homozygous black, with what appears to be sabino, so you might get black with chrome. How cool would that be?:D

Any online video anywhere of Fabuleux?
I am glad I asked this question, got some new names! :)

I have a 3 y/o Fabuleux. Super, super temperament. He is so quiet and behaves more like a 15 year old. Also very smart, never have to repeat a lesson with him as he just "get's it" right away. He now has ten rides under him and is doing very well.
You'd get a bay, that's for sure. Maybe a black! ;)

Contact Barb Schmidt at bridlewoodhanoverians.com. She is very responsive and I'm sure would have a dvd out to you in no time.

I had forgotten that Windfall is AHS approved now. I recommend him highly as well -- he's the sire of our homebred colt.

PP, Barb is lightning fast with getting DVDs out, but if you want, I can send you mine as long as you send it back. I will be in the East Bay in the next few days also, so I could potentially meet you somewhere. I love Fabuleux!

Oh that would be nice. I feel like such the dvd collector right now! I am always trying to see online video before I order video/dvd, as I know within a minute if the stallion is close to the type I am looking for.
Since I am looking for more hunter movement (matching my mare) I don't want to see extravagant gaits.
I am a little confused why stallion owners don't have at least a couple minutes of walk-trot-canter on line for people to see.

Just another vote for Sonntagskind. I know you said "eh" on Sandro, but remember he's Sandro Hit x Donnerhall x Rubinstein. So, lots of desirable bloodlines.
I had the pleasure of watching him jump around a course this week (I school my horse at Lucy's farm). He's really a multi-talented (and sweeeeeet! boy).

Send me a PM & I can mail it or we can meet somewhere. He himself isn't a hunter mover, but I have seen video of a bunch of babies that can hack in the best of company. I'd breed to him for a hunter on the right mare & woudn't think twice about doing so.

I second Donarweiss!
My filly is of very similar breeding as Donarweiss and she is absolutely amazing, so I am going to tote his breeding up.
He is a gorgeous horse with a very promising future. If you want black with breeding and talent. He is a fantastic choice.

Donnerweiss is wonderful but only 16h.
Bugatti Hilltop is one of my favorite stallions but although tall himself, not sure he'll add the height she's looking for. I've heard some of his can be small. Not trying to dis Bugatti. As I said, he's one of my favorites!
Sir Wanabi might be your man. Throws a very modern, typey foal, AHS, great character, jumping, and movement. He's a newer stallion so not sure he'll add height but he's 16.3h. www.laprisestable.com

Fabuleux is a super stallion (and will never produce a chestnut) AND comes from a super damline. You'll love him. My foundation mare is from the same breeder as Fabuleux and out of the same damline. She loves giving me black fillies! I should have called our farm "Black Mare Farm".
BTW.. when you get the Fabuleux DVD it will blow you away.. He is awesome mover!
