Zorriola M2S received a 78.5 in her Iron Spring Farm Cup 5 Yr. old Jumper competition , Ana Bella M2S received a 76 in her Iron Spring Farm 4 Yr. old Jumper competition, , received 80's for reflexes and scope and 85 for technique in her freejumping, a 70 for conformation and passed her IBOP - all this after only 65 days under saddle! Daughter Monica rode both. Expectations were exceeded by all three !
Nancy Debosek's Ferro colt out of Pasandra was named top dressage colt and First Premium. Perhaps someone else can fill in on the other awards.

Thank you, Sara! It was a good day for us! We have added a video of Ana's free jumping to our post as well as the IBOP/Iron Spring Farm Cup rounds.
I hope someone else who was there can post other results. We pretty much constituted the bulk of the jumper contingent and only saw snippets of the dressage segment. There was one lovely gray hunter mare that went First Premium but I do not recall her name or breeding. Can someone fill us in?
We also hope that the results will be posted from the other sites as they occur!

we hosted our first keuring at our farm yesterday. it went great. not a huge
number of horses because we did not have a large number of stalls, but the
quality of the horses that came was very good. my dutch mare, avalon -juventus x joline(michaelangelo) was given a star and got a good score on
her ibop test despite being a little fussy. julie harralson's horses were the
stars of the show. all in all, it was great. the judges were wonderful. very
nice, interested in educating the crowd. it was a great experience. i am
planning on attending a hanoverian approval soon. it'll be interesting to
see how it compares. i really like the dutch group. i'm most impressed.:)

Basil MG (Lancet x Goodtimes x Dreamstreet) gelding bred by Majestic Gaits and owned by Donna Nita got his star at the Florida keuring and was the high scoring mature horse of the keuring. I am waiting for photos from Donna now. She is back home in SC and I think on cloud nine. LOL. This is out of our Keur Elite mare Miloma. One more star and she gets her preferent.
Good luck everyone at the rest of the keuring and do post results.

Congrats to all so far. Some results are posted at kwpn-na.org already.
Just received the In de Strengen from the week of the KWPN Horse Days. Nice to see pictures of the top mares, especially the reserve champion dressage mare who is a UB-40! A full sister of Uphill (whose frozen semen we're going to have access to next year...) was also one of the finalists.

The Silver Creek Keuring results were posted under another thread. I am not computer savvy enough to figure out how to get them here :) Perhaps someone else can do it...it was a small keuring, but such a nice event and we all enjoyed ourselves.
Kathy Childs' Goodtimes colt, Eragon was really stunning - everyone was commenting on his gorgeous canter and he had the most beautiful head with a large expressive blaze. This is such a beautiful colt, I cannot get him out of my mind! Actually, all three of the dressage foals were really nice and First Premium.
My Holsteiner mare Geneva KS who is seventeen this year now has her Star predicate, was First Premium and Best Jumper. She is such a super mare and I so proud of her. Unfortunately, her colt E'Lupicor was not having the best day and didn't do nearly as well and we had to leave Daytona (Brimstone's sister by Silverstone) home because of logistical trailering issues.
I am looking forward to hearing more results!!

Congratulations to Merijane on receiving the highest score for a young horse at the DG Bar keuring for her lovely weanling filly, Evanta III MMW (UB40 x Sandro Hit).
Big congratulations also to Jeanne Schamblin and Sierra Vista Sporthorses, whose 3-year-old filly Bling! SVS, by Prestige VDL out of the beautiful Vittoria SVS Keur, became Keur after achieving high conformation and movement scores in hand, and a very successful IBOP (77.5).
Jeanne’s 4-year-old Rousseau x Idocus filly, Alympia, also earned provisional keur status, and her elegant weanling filly Encore (Sir Sinclair x Rousseau x Idocus) received a first premium and placed 4th out of 11 foals.

Bling! sold to Willy Arts immediately after the inspection and is being vetted today! He also apparently asked about the Sir Sinclair filly, and Jeanne's mare Bacara (Rousseau/Pik's Patina/Pik Solo). Bacara got a 2nd Premium and Jeanne was told to: "get her under saddle and present her to the IBOP and the CUP and she will be first premium and then go on for star and keur."
Another of Jeanne's mares, Balenciaga, was presented as a hunter prospect and they said she should be in the jumper program instead, she got 80 for conformation and 70?? for movement. (Note: this notes are from a very EXCITED email from Jeannne, so hopefully all this information is accurate!!)

Hello All-Just wanted to share that our Judgement ISF-Galoubet A colt, Elan KF, was First Premium Jumper Foals/Weanlings at DG Bar Ranch Keuring.
His dam, Aschenputtle by Galoubet A, also produced Valeda (2005), the International Jumper Futurity Midwest Champion Most Grand Prix Potential AND Best Performance at Traders Point in August of this year. Valeda is a Premium Holsteiner mare by Riverman (Holsteiner).
Quite a year for Aschenputtle at 21 years of age!!!! This year she also produced an elegant filly by Mezcalero (KWPN) by ET and with a little luck, we hope to continue to produce Aschenputtle babies by ET in the future.

Nice horses on your web site. You have invested in quite a few crosses with Hilltop's Riverman.
Since he is always one that draws comments, you obviously like the results you have been getting.

Some results from the Washington keuring at Donida Farm:
UB40 offspring dominated the foal class with the Champion foal and all first premiums. Champion foal was Echo WS, bred by Carrie O'Brien of Oregon and out of the TB mare Kitty Up.
The UB40 foals, out of different mare types were remarkably uniform in type and movement. They all have characteristic beautiful heads with large, wide-set expressive eyes, elegant, upright neck sets, long legs, and wonderful trot movement with powerful hind legs. He really stamps his foals with these qualities time and time again. It is something of a phenomena, really. At the end of this keuring tour, we are going to see an impressive number of 1st premium foals by UB40. I really can't wait to see how they all turn out under saddle in the next years.
The mare Vjerakelly, owned by Diane Stack passed her IBOP and became an Elite mare. The really elegant and pretty Sir Sinclair x Harlem mare, Zamora also passed her IBOP and became Keur. The Farrington x Jazz mare Zen Rosa Elite won the DG Bar cup for the 5 year olds. I think Gwen Blake's Contango mare Beyonce was also named Ster.
Zarry Nights, a Consul mare, received Ster status for jumpers after only 10 rides over fences ever! as her owner rides her dressage.
It was a small keuring, but well-run at the really beautiful Donida Farm facility, and the weather was perfect! The jury really made themselves available to the participants and spent time discussing breeding options with the owners.

I love UB40's movement and conformation (always my favorite on the Iron Spring DVD's), but, what is the temperament like on his foals? I know he was known to be a bit, uh, stubborn/hot? when he was first imported and shown...has that changed any with age? Are most of the mares bred to him nicely tempered?

They seemed like normally behaved foals to me, trotting happily alongside their dams. I can tell you the only foal that was difficult to bring to the arena and I was told went over backwards, was NOT a UB40 foal. Only other thing I can tell you is that the dams of these UB40 babies varied quite a bit as to type and bloodlines, yet UB40's influence on type and movement was undeniable. I am now officially a member of the UB40 fan club, a fan base that I think will continue to grow here and abroad. Time will tell on the rideability/temperament questions.

Wow, great info on the UB foals, thank you so much! Would you say they were more rectangular or square in body shape/length? Or was there a trend in that area?
I think his oldest crop in Holland is 4 this year, so hopefully there will be some feedback coming of how they are under saddle.
Congrats to everyone!

I think UB40 is going to really be a super dutch producer! I just sold one to MI (coming 3) out of a dutch approved trakehner mare. VERY good trot and canter, walk clear, but could use more overtrack. Very sensible and easy filly and I know she is taking to tacking very well. www.youtube.com/equistride
In fact, I bred my SPS DOnnerhall mare to him for a 2010 baby, she can handle ANY spunk a stallion may give along, lol, and she has an outstanding walk. Scored 8 and 9's on movement, 9's for temperement and ridability.
I am very excited! congrats to all!

Last winter I saw UB several times when my trainer was at ISF South for lessons. He was ridden in the same arena with my mare (who was in heat at least one of those times) and was always a perfect gentleman (though he did kind of make google eyes at her once ). I guess he has good taste in mares.
I am hearing very good things about the UB babies' temperament.

I had to look up the pedigree of UB40 again and he is a grandson of Jazz.... for those who might know of Jazz.
Hence the questions about temperament. Certainly no question about talent, of course.

Interesting that a Fabricius son out of a Fortissimo mare was presented and received ster as a Gelders horse, in that Fabricius and Fortissimo were both Harness book stallions and that this horse is 12.5% Hackney.

Actually, I can guarantee that the questions about his temperament are earned by the stallion himself and not because Jazz appears as his grandsire on his papers. UB40 is a gorgeous stallion with A LOT of knee and hock action, but he does have meltdowns in public, which I have witnessed. IMO, I think these meltdowns have more to do with his riding/training than him as an individual, though clearly he is a more sensitive type. But when he has them, they are really odd - out of nowhere and his evasions are weird (i.e., he runs backwards and tries to sit or lie down at the same time). As long as his offspring are not exhibiting these tendencies, I would not worry about it (and as I said, I think these disobediences are man-made).

Man made? Really?
That is my opinion based on what I have witnessed and some knowledge of his background. Put it this way, if I had a mare with a good temperament I would not be overly concerned that his psych issues are heritable.
Indy-lou
Sep. 13, 2009, 01:29 PM
Yes, very possibly man-made. I had heard from a very reliable source that UB came to the US with some rider/training related baggage. Sometimes the combination of intelligent and sensitive works to a disadvantage, especially in a stallion perhaps, and he obviously had been pointed towards the fast track in his early training with an eye towards sale. Not too hard to imagine is it? Anyway, in UB's foals, Jazz will be back in the 4th generation.
The foals are very nice, and long-time breeders have bred back to him after raising foals by him, often bringing even more mares to him, so this indicates to me that they are appreciating his foals, and not seeing any distinct negative temperament traits so far. UB40's first approved son, Apache got good remarks in his stallion test for character, rideability and work ethic.

Sometimes the combination of intelligent and sensitive works to a disadvantage
That was my take re the smart / sensitive issue. I think that accurately describes him.
FWIW, I have a mare out of a Jazz mare that is an absolute puppy dog. I think Jazz gets unfair press.

If UB40 has rider/trainer baggage it came from his time in Holland. His current rider does a great job with him and has earned his trust. How a horse is first started can set a precident for the rest of his training. His current rider Alex is kind, compassionate and loves the horse. UBs babies are all wonderful with great temperaments. I wish my mare was still able to conceive and carry a foal. I would bred her to him in a heartbeat.

Yes but he most certainly is not UB40's first rider/trainer. There were others here and in Holland. And I can virtually guarantee you that if that horse had been managed better as a youngster he would not be acting as he does now. He is a really nice horse and it is sad to watch him.

High-scoring dressage horse was Bardot S. E. (by Florencio and out of Natuur). Bardot got her star and was declared keur elligible which gives her dam the Preferent predicate!!!! Stall Europa now has two Preferent mares in residence and both received their predicate in this country.
High-scoring foal was the colt Encore by Jazz and out of Aloha S. E., owned by Lisa Dickman of Virginia Beach.
A very good day for Stall Europa!!
Congrats Siegi!! I must confess that I'm not suprised, you have lovely horses!!
Sniff, I so wish we had a keuring in our area this year........

Kudos to the KWPN/NA for maintaining such high standards over the years. That foresight seems to be producing very nice offspring. They have never been one of the "drink the Kool-aid" registries who rewards everyone who pays fees. Over the years, I've had the pleasure to see some quite nice Dutch offspring (and so glad that flat croup thing is disappearing from the breed!). Congratulations to everyone doing so well with their foals this year.

We at Paard Hill Farms had great results too. Beatrice VDL received her Star with Provisional Keur. Bronziet was awarded Star for jumping. A special thanks to Angela Sasso for her amazing prep and training of Beatrice and Bronziet. One of our owners Julia Snyder also received 1st premium with her Echo Tango HWF (Sir Sinclair/Roemer) in dressage and 1st premium with her Energee HWF (Riverman ISF/Silvio ll) reserve jumper. Echo was orphaned when his dam Joplin became ill. Necha the dam of Energee took on the job of caring for her best friend Joplin's now orphaned foal Echo. The KWPN was kind enough to allow both foals along with Necha to enter the ring and be evaluated at the same time. It was great to see Necha taking her job so seriously. She spent all her time in the ring and outside the ring nursing first one than the other then both foals. What a busy girl she is. Blessed are the broodmares. She is also back in foal with another Riverman for 2010. Congrats to Julia. Congrats to all the owners and breeders. The list is too long to list them all. Also a special thank you to Mary Alice, Meghan, and all the staff at ISF for another successful year.

Thank you for the compliments on our foals. Angela is the greatest at starting young horses under saddle. She does a great job with them. All our foals are raised at Paard Hill Farms Manheim until time to start under saddle. The 2 foals presented at the keuring were born and trained here on the farm. They were groomed, trained and prepped by us and Angela was one of our handlers. I appreciate your compliments on how well they were turned out. We really do pride ourselves on proper training and grooming from birth. You have made a good choice with Angela.

Hello Everyone!
WOW! SO many people to Congratulate!! Please forgive me if I forget anyone! Kudos and Congratulations to Bestview, Peskee, Paard Hill Farm, Julia Snyder, Goldhope Farm , Greifenstein Farm, Siegi, (LOVE your gorgeous Bardot! Congrats on her Dressage Championship!!), and THANKS and Congratulations to Meghan and Mary Alice of Iron Spring Farm for their impressive organization, and great results at the ISF Keuring!
I am proud to announce that we also had excellent results at the ISF Keuring which I would like to share.....
For the 3rd consecutive year, we had 100% First Premiums (and/or Sters) awarded. Our foals, (both by Balou du Rouet), Eclipse SCF out of Nova Keur,(full sister to ISF's Judgement) and Eros SCF out of our Coriano daughter Moriana (aka Madison Avenue in the hunter ring), both were First Premium, and Eclipse was Jumper Foal Champion! Eclipse joins SCF alumni Carte Blanche SCF (Lupicor x Goodtimes (Wildcard Keur Elite) congrats Angie!) and Dena SCF (Judgement ISF X A P Jetxx), in earning "Top Jumper Foal Awards" for SCF for three Consecutive years.....We feel so honored, and grateful to our "Girls".... Certainly, none of this would be possible without them!
In addition, our special girl "Bleu SCF" (Balou du Rouet X Marie Louise Elite Preferent (Silvio 1) was not only Awarded her Ster Predicate, but also won the " Top Jumper Award (for older horses). She will do her IBOP, and fulfill her Reg A requirements to go for Keur next year......
This post wouldn't be complete without thanking ALL of the people who made these results possible.....I was not able to attend this Keuring (the first one I have missed in (20!) years! I was at home on bed rest after orthopedic foot surgery, and, caring for my son who badly broke his arm (and had sx), and dislocated his wrist at football practice the DAY before....We couldn't have done this without my sister and brother in law Lauren and Robert, my wonderful husband Carlos (who has been doing my work plus his), my fabulous trainer Angela Sasso, and grooms Kerri, Karen, and Theresa. Thanks also to Janko and Carlos for their fantastic handling!
Thanks also to all of my family and friends who called in results, and/or took videos and photos for me so that I actually got to "see" our horses at the Keuring.....sure helped to take the sting out of not being there in person!
Additional thanks for all of the support and congratulations.....and heartfelt , huge congratulations to Jeanne Schamblin of CA, who now owns our homebred mare Olympia Ster (Idocus Crown X Wanroij). Olympia's Roussea filly Alympia was awarded her Ster and Provisional Keur, and HER daughter by Sir Sinclair was First Premium too (Olympias grandaughter)!
Sorry for the lengthy post......
Warmly,

We had our KWPN-NA keuring today at Apple Knoll Farm in MA. I am so happy that we had all first premium foals today.
Jumpers
Eeyanette RGS (Veron x Accord II x Ahorn) 1st Premium 1st in Class
Evitta MG (Navarone x Glenridge x Zuidhorn) 1st Premium 2nd in Class
Dressage
Emora MG (Farrington x Flemmingh x Ahorn) 1st Premium 3rd in Class
Eloma MG (Schroeder x Goodtimes x Dreamstreet) 1st Premium 4th in Class
Woohoo! A big keuring too with a good turnout. At least 120 people there, but I think maybe more. Tough judging this year. Only one older horse got First premium and star.

I'll second Kathy's comments on the keuring--there were a lot of horses, the event was run wonderfully by host, Dayna Gant, and her crew, and the jury was really strict. All good things.
We had the only ster ranked adult horse, Bunny SSF (Johnson x Volkmar).
DaVinci SSF (UB-40 x Havidoff) was the only yearling or two year old to receive a first premium.
Eros SSF (UB-40 x Havidoff) was second in the ringing order of first premium dressage foals.
Ade Lente W (Freestyle x Cabochon) won the DG Bar Cup and passed her IBOP.
The best part of the whole keuring experience for me, however, was the fact that it is the first time in five years that Team Tolman wasn't missing one its members--having my family all together and sharing cool horses is about as good as it gets.

I am happy to say my first keuring is now history. We went to the Claybrook farm site in MI.
It was a long drive, but I am glad we went. Funny how small a world it is, one of the other participants lives about 10 miles away from me. Drive 350+ miles to meet a new neighbor.
My colt, Eastwood SPF (Cathalido x Goodtimes x Calvados) was 1st premium and 2nd in the Jumper foals class.
His Dam, Ulottie (Goodtimes x Calvados x G. Ramiro Z) is star eligible, once she completes the jumping requirement. Her colt was not allowed in the indoor arena for the freejumping, and she was too worked up about his absence to jump safely. Disappointing :( , but what can you do...
I am very sorry to say I do not know much of the other results. Hopefully someone will be able to contribute. I do know that the ISF Cup was won by Akina Field CBF (Goodtimes - Corland), owned and bred by Claybrook Farm and the 3yr old DB Bar Cup was won by Bentley SCF (Sir Donnerhall - Ferro), bred and owned by Lana Sneddon.

For young horse, it is either the top jumper or top dressage foal as they made that comment on both of them that it is one of the best foals they have seen on the entire tour. They should both be in the top 5 I think?
For the Jumpers it was 1st my Veron x Accord II filly, 2nd my Navarone x Glenridge filly, 3rd was a Wittinger, I think I lost it after that. I think 8 or 9 in each class. Maybe someone remembers the order. I was on cloud nine at that point. hahaha.
Thanks Stardoozer on the Farrington x Flemmingh. She is really special. Both the Farrington and Schroeder foals were already sold to Melanie Cerny and she was there and very happy on the results! Can't wait until she is kicking butt in the dressage ring in the future. My mare is bred back to Farrington, so I am hoping for a nice stallion prospect. Farrington is 22 this year and going strong, but you never know.

I'm back from the keuring at Gingerwood, in Prince Edward Island. I didn't have a chance to write down anything, although I did video a bit. Pictures later too, I hope. Our keuring did not go exactly as planned. Travel plans for the jury and Janko were disrupted. They found themselves stranded in Halifax, N.S., a good 4 to 5 hour drive from the keuring site, after Air Canada cancelled their flight to PEI. They had to rent a car. Consequently the keuring, scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m., didn't get underway until 7:00 p.m. We wound up having our reception before the keuring rather than after, while waiting for the jury to arrive. The jury and Janko showed up in good spirits, but tired and in need of caffeine. By then, it was dusk with the temperature dropping rapidly. The IBOPs were being done outside in a ring with no lights. The horses deserved high marks for just holding it together in such a spooky environment and feeling so fresh in the cold air. I was afraid the jury would need night vision goggles by the time the last test was underway. After that, everything was moved indoors. It was a long day for everyone - jury, breeders, hosts, and even some die-hard spectators who weren't dissuaded by the delays to leave before the keuring had ended.
To the best of my recollection, top dressage foal was Esprentina, NPF (Sir Oldenburg x Florestan), a lovely long-legged black filly with four stockings, bred by New Perth Farms. Top jumper foal was Euro's Praxi (Lupicor x Judgement), a very typey filly, bred by Euro Equestrian Sales.
In the yearlings, Demarko NPF, (Johnson x Florestan) received First Premium. This was a very nice looking and moving yearling colt.
For studbook, of the mares, there were two Stars, who coincidentally are full sisters (Ferro x Wanroij), both mine. The first place was Bosanova (dressage), who was also declared keur eligible. The second mare, Zenda, a jumper, received her Star after having successfully completed her jumping IBOP. She did not, however, meet the standard for keur eligibility, because of her type (larger more common head and big ears, lack of typiness). The only gelding to be presented, Bolero NSN (Sir Donnerhall x Idocus) wound up being the high-scoring dressage horse. Bolero received his provisional Star. He is also mine, making 3 First Premiums for my 3 horses presented. This is especially gratifying, after hearing how strict the judging has been. Being a Reg. A gelding, Bolero must fulfill radiograph, endoscope and IBOP/performance requirements before he can get his Ster predicate. He is also not eligible for the "Top Five" ranking.
The jury then had a chance to eat after the keuring, before retiring, only to catch a very early flight for Toronto, to judge the final keuring at Prima Equestrian today.

Congratulations!!! Would love to hear more details and results on the 'in the dark' Keuring. Wow that had to be hard...way to go:)
Except for the poor weather, with on and off rain, the keuring went well. I didn't see the dressage foals and I don't have a program in front of me so I can't give specific names but the jumper foals got excellent comments. The judges were really impressed with the high quality of the jumper foals and awarded every foal in the class Premium. They said that they had not had a class throughout the keurings this year in which all the foals received Premium so Ontario breeders are doing something right. In the undersaddle dressage classes, Adessa, who is a Gelders Paard (Gelderlander) returned this year to do the IBOP and was awarded the Keur predicate. She was not entered into the DG Bar Cup. Amelia Ster by Jacardo out of Urania(xKelvin) had the high score of 78 in the IBOP. She was entered into the DG Bar Cup and received the first place ribbon and cooler. Someone else will have to report on the rest of the results. I'm looking forward to seeing them. :)

There are two breeders of KWPN horses on PEI, but this keuring was for the Martime provinces. I trailered in from Nova Scotia, and I have been breeding KWPN horses since 1997. There were three other breeders from N.S., and I know of a couple of other breeders that did not choose to bring horses this year. I live very close to the airport just outside Halifax, so the trip for me was about the same as the trip for the jury.
I know there are Canadian Warmblood and Canadian Sporthorse inspections regularly in Nova Scotia, and sometimes Belgium Warmblood inspections. I'm not sure about Hanoverian and I don't think Oldenburg comes this way. The Swedish Warmblood inspectors were here years ago, when a breeder (now retired) was breeding horses of that registry.
The last two KWPN inspections (and the first ones held on the east coast of Canada) were in 2002 and 2006, both in Nova Scotia, which I hosted. So it was time for a change of venue. In all, 17 horses were presented this year, I believe.
CR, I saw your Balou filly. Unfortunately, she was not at the best stage of her yearling year.
She was quite overbuilt which didn't help her movement. I may have taped the judges comments and can PM you exactly what they said, if you like. I have not had a chance to check any video yet. The Chin Chin foal out of a Judgement mare, bred by Euro Sales Equestrian was also at a bad stage - just not developed enough. It is rarely I don't ogle the Chin Chin's, but this filly just needs some time to grow. Both were second premium, but the owners were encouraged to bring their horses back.
The dressage IBOP horses (only two presented) did not get sufficient scores to pass. It is a lot to expect of a three and four year-old under those conditions in the near-dark, extremely daunting. In fairness, the jury had suggested moving the dressage IBOPs inside, but the owners preferred to stay outside because, from what I understand, the 3 year-old had not yet been ridden in an indoor arena, and to set up the ring would have taken even more time from an already pressured schedule.
My jumping mare, Zenda, was a bit more seasoned, at five, although she has never shown.
She is a bold mare to begin with. She was very fresh, however, to the point my rider had to jump off and lunge her on the line as part of the warm-up to blow off some steam. She remained tense through the back for the entire test, which is not at all normal for her. This mare usually has a 8.5 to 9 walk. She got a 7 that night. She started off a bit rocky on the trot poles/rails, but once allowed to do the triple combination, she vastly improved. But it took a lot on the rider's part to keep her in check and not blast through the jumps. The jury wanted to see my rider give a bit more in the reins to allow the head out leading up to the jumps, but my rider had to weigh this option against whether she would be able to stay in control. The day before in the afternoon, it was a different scene entirely - relaxed and so very supple. This mare can jump the moon, she is so powerful behind. But she passed the IBOP, so I am happy. Zenda received and 8 for her attitude and 8 for rideability! That was a real test of these traits!!

Hillside H - the vet students at the Atlantic Vet teaching Hospital in Charlottetown always get excited when a warmblood arrives. They say they see so many standardbreds, that getting a warmblood to work on is a real treat.
I had to laugh once. I brought a mare in once for her PROK X-rays. The teaching vet asked if he could "borrow" her for a bit, to show his students what a healthy horse should look like. I was only too willing to oblige.

Let's see if I can remember everything from the keuring today...
As mentioned, Adessa and Amelia completed the dressage IBOP. Amelia won the DGB cup, she was given the ster predicate but not keur eligible. Adessa recieved her keur predicate.
3 horses completed the jumping IBOP. Beyond P (Ahorn x Ferro) was the high score and winner of the ISF cup. Beam P (Indoctro x Emilion) was 2nd. Bella Luna (Ikoon x Wolfgang) was 3rd, but then switched to the hunter direction after the freejumping. Beam P was awarded his ster predicate and Beyond P was awarded her keur predicate.
Not completing an IBOP, but presented for studbook approval was the top jumping mare Bieni (Cardento x Lux), she scored an 80 for conformation and an 80 for jumping earning her ster predicate and being declared keur eligible. She also presented a few dramatic moments when bucking inches from Janko's head, and going under the jump which was lining the freejumping chute!!
Volette TH (Pacific x Jimtown) was also shown, and recieved her keur predicate.
Bambino Chin P was presented for stallion pre-approval, and recieved his first premium and ster predicate.
Disney (Freestyle x Gribaldi) was the only yearling (dressage) shown and recieved a first premium.
Elcho P (Johnson x Houston) and Exodus Bloom (Sir Sinclair x Rolls Royce) were both first premium, with Elcho being named the top dressage foal. There was some discussion about switching Exodus Bloom to the hunter breeding direction.
The jumper foals were all first premium. They placed in the following order: Estrada LWS (Numero Uno x Nimmerdor), Epsom Bloom (Clinton x Silverstone), Elle Chin P (Chin Chin x Ferro), Elektra LWS (Ustinov x Lux) and Empress Chin P (Chin Chin x Emilion).

Thanks so much for the update Martha! She's a Balou du Rouet x Ahorn. I wondered how she would do...the new owner sent me some pictures of her a month ago and she was definitely in the awkward lanky butt high yearling phase. At the moment she is a full hand higher in the hind which would not have helped the movement for sure. Gotta love the yearling phase!!!

This came up in a conversation today and I'm surprised that it didn't get any mention on this thread.....
There was a 1st premium awarded to a filly by Mr. Blue and out of Carthago Z mare!! Owned and bred by DG Bar Ranch.
For all you jumper afficionados out there, how many Mr. Blue offspring do you think we have in the US? I know that he's very popular in Holland these days....

Yes, all the KPWN-NA horses I have produced are progeny of Never Say Never, first or second generation. Never Say Never, bred by Sporting Chance Farm (thanks Karin!) started out as an Auxiliary foalbook foal (half thoroughbred by blood), albeit a very nice one. She was second in North America as an XB foal at her keuring. I bought her as a 2 year-old and went on from there. She is now Keur Preferent and has produced five Ster offspring consecutively (except for Apollo, who passed away before his studbook inspection). Two of these, both Ferro x Wanroij, were 1st in North America at their keurings - Bosanova, as a foal, Ulysses, at studbook age. Ulysses went on to qualify for the Young Jumper Championships in Brazil as a 5 year-old. Never Say Never also has a Keur Eligible and PROK grandaughter, Versailles (Orame x Idocus) as well as Bolero, Provisional Ster. Another grandaughter, Zeta (Metall x Idocus) is competing successfully as an eventer.
I am Bosanova's tail dresser. Yes, she has a marvelous full tail, but oftentimes it is in dreadlocks. I only comb it when it is washed, which is not very often.
I wish there was such a thing as double Preferent. I don't think there is. Winnie (aka. Never Say Never) is expecting a foal by Banderas in 2010.

Hi Martha and Everyone!
Martha, I check your website regularly, and followed the above YouTube links.....WOW!!!! All super horses, but Bosanova, well, WOW!!!!! You have done an amazingly consistent job of producing Amazing horses!! Sure, Never Say Never Keur Preferent is a big part of the equation, but with your stallion choices, nurturing and training decisions, etc., the credit all goes to YOU!!!! I am so proud of the dynasty you have built! I also can't believe how great "Winnie" looks at her age, and after so many foals! Love those Wanroij mares!!!! Keep up the great work!

Congratulations Everyone!!
Sounds like a very successfull Keuring tour for everyone! I am SO happy for you all .....Siegi, Scot, Kathy, Michelle, Tracey, Lauren , ISF, Dee and Paard Hill and anyone else I might have forgotten (Sorry in advance!)!!
It sure seems like the bar of quality is being raised every year....a great thing for both Breeders and the KWPN population!
Siegi, I have always been interested in Mr Blue after seeing him in the US, but have never heard that his semen was available here....I know he died young...Maybe the Europeans are keeping all of a limited supply?? Just guessing....If you know where to get some, please let me know!
One more thing Martha, your Soprano filly's photos on your website (Elektra NSN) are EXQUISITE!!!! Too bad she was born too late to get to the Keuring... I am sure she would have done really well!!! Do you have any more recent photos of her? BTW, I agree that it is a real Shame that Register A's are not eligible for Top Five....I feel your pain as Bleu SCF (Balou du Rouet X Silvio 1 Elite Pref) who was High Point Jumper at ISF, would probably have been in there also.....

I think Seigi, Karin and I are worshippers of our Wanroij mares! And Seigi, you have TWO of them.
Karin, I have no doubt Bleu would have made the Top Five jumper list. I guess that's what we get for breeding to "outside" stallions. After the keuring, when talking with Bart about some of my stallion choices, he pointedly directed me to look at his tie, which had the letters "KWPN" all over it.
RE: UB40 - I really like many of his foals, but with specialization, I prefer to breed Winnie to a jumper stallion at this point. I think Rhumba, Winnie's daughter by Idocus, or Bosanova (especially her) would be better choices for UB40. I have to be careful with Bosanova because her neck is so vertical - I don't want a giraffe. I have a whole list of stallions I would love to cross Bosanova with. Winnie now needs fresh semen. I cannot get fresh from the U.S. into this part of Canada in a timely manner, especially since the CEM protocol. Getting frozen Soprano semen was even a real pain this year, with the import permits and shipping problems I encountered.

I have to say, I encountered a similar response from him. I heard repeatedly that the mare had a nice foal, but "too bad you didn't breed her dutch." Hmmmm. I did remind him that we don't have a broad selection here in Fresh cooled Jumper stallions that are KWPN.
On the flip side, when I asked about stallions for her, Indoctro was the top suggestion. He looks pretty strongly Holsteiner to me.

Congratulations again to everybody for such good keuring results! Yes, those Wanroij mares are very special and if I may just brag a little about my two..... Kadence (Wanroij x Volckmar) is a Keur Preferent mare, and the other one, Natuur (Wanroij x Oran) has her Ster and as of this year will also have her Preferent title thanks to her daughter Bardot S. E. by Florencio!!!

Big congratulations to all on the second half of the tour.
We share your feelings of regret about the Registry A horses not being eligible for the Top Five awards. Our Ana Bella (Condios-Ekstein) surely would have been in the running with her 80 for jumping (85 for technique) and her high IBOP score. Maybe there could be a separate Top Five for the registry A's?
Just kidding....

May I add that the judges from the Netherlands are employed by KWPN. It would be difficult for them to recommend anything other than KWPN stallions.

Well, I was struck by pure luck for my chance at the Top Five. Clinton has been accepted as an Erkend stallion LAST MONTH! It means that if the keuring had been one month earlier I might have missed the lottery.
I didn't know that being Reg. A was putting you off this prestigious TOP FIVE! Well I still have one dose of Clinton so I guess it won't be a headache for next breeding.

May I add that the judges from the Netherlands are employed by KWPN. It would be difficult for them to recommend anything other than KWPN stallions.
And I guess this is a good thing. They have strict criteria and they really have to stick to their policies when choosing a stallion. They make exception for outstanding individuals however. They sure can make mistake as any other registry but stallions may be presented once more if they have proved themselves in sport. I feel they are our expert guardian and this is why this registry is so interesting and has been in the Top jumping ranking (First) for the last 5 years or so.
And you see I chose an outside stallion with Clinton because he is such a great jumper and I felt he would complement my mare so well. But I knew he had some X-ray’s issues as this was the reason why he had not been accepted before. However with a Prok mare this was a plus in my decision.
Now it seems that despite his X-ray’s , he has proven himself enough to worth the risk.
But how many other registries put so much emphasis on this so serious OCD problem?
Dutch
Sep. 28, 2009, 01:29 PM
I can certainly understand why the KWPN makes things easier if the breeders choose KWPN Accepted stallions. No other registry that I know of has such strict criteria for stallion approval. This is just one of the many reasons I like the KWPN.
It makes sense, then, to require offspring of outside stallions to submit to the X-rays and endoscope required of KWPN stallions. What I don't understand is the under-saddle performance test requirement for Ster. It is a lot to ask of a three year-old. To me, that should still remain as a separate entity from the Ster designation.
The difficulty in staying entirely with KWPN is more one of logistics for me. If I can't use frozen, and have to use fresh cooled from within the Canadian border, that really limits me. I put a lot of thought and research into my stallion picks. It is not just a matter of who is closest and most fertile. Even using frozen, not all KWPN stallions are available in North America, although there is quite a selection. Some brokers are easier to deal with than others. I envy the breeders in Europe who have a smorgasbord of fresh semen from which to choose.

May I answer this for you Martha?
Winnie is only 14 years old and her first 3 offspring made her Preferent. I am a huge fan of this mare and I bought a filly in utero out of her. She is a real beauty with such an elegant neck but Winnie seems to be consistent on offering this to her foals.
Unfortunately she developed a bone infection as a baby that threatens her life. I am glad that she is alive but she will never be under saddle. Bad luck happen, I am sure she would have been wonderful under saddle and would have added another star to Winnie's sky. However she was meant to be a broodmare and this is what she will be.

Thanks, Suzanne!
Calypsabloom developed osteomyalitis, which symptoms didn't show until the day AFTER the vet came and gave her a clean bill of health for insurance when she was almost 2 weeks old. Unfortunately, the insurance wasn't wasn't yet in place when she presented dead lame that next day. Having the vet go over her so thoroughly provided me a bit of solace that I had not overlooked previous symptoms. Calypsa was shipped to the hospital, where even the staff were surprised by the diagnosis. I'm not sure what they were expecting to find, but it wasn't that. Part of the problem might have been that the infection was not in a joint, as is often the case, but on Calypsa's hind cannon bone. We can only assume bacteria entered through the umbilical cord at birth. After intensive treatment, including surgery to remove the pea-sized infected bone, Calypsa came through like a trooper. The area where the bone was removed filled in, thanks to her very young age. I haven't seen Calypsa in person since she was 6 months old, but she was pasture sound then. It was still too early to know whether she would be rideable. Pictures on my website showing Calypsa at three and four months are after all the treatment. I'll let you all guess which hind leg was the problem.
Winnie snuck this delivery in with very little notice, having only waxed that morning. Normally, Winnie drips milk for days. We discovered Winnie and her newborn foal in the paddock less than an hour after it was born. My son and I had gone out to bring Winnie in for the night. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw Calypsa. I was SO expecting a chestnut, and here is this beautiful dark bay filly with a big stripe down her face, already on her feet and nursing - totally gorgeous and very well muscled. Getting Calypsa inside took a Herculian effort from my 19 year-old son, this filly was so fiesty.
I have no doubt Calypsa will turn out to be an exceptional broodmare, which was the reason Suzanne purchased her. I can't wait to see one of her foals.
Meantime, Suzanne, give her a hug and some carrots for me, please. I'm still mulling over stallion suggestions.

My mare is more the old-fashioned type than either of Siegi's two. My mare did jumpers with her previous owner. The mare line is Gelderlander. I have a Sir Sinclair filly, now three, just entering under saddle training, and a Royal Prince filly, now a yearling out of this mare. Sadly, she lost her Sandreo pregnancy. It was a colt and I was so excited about that cross. The approved stallion and international jumping competitor Cor d'Emilion came from this mare line. Several stallions. There is also a harness horse stem from this line, and of course all of the wonderful dressage horses produced here in the US. Versatile mare line. Indy-Lou - both of my Wanroij mares have Tolinda in their background..... Natuur by Wanroij and directly out of Tolinda (who has her Keur Preferent title, as does her dam Linda). So now we have Natuur, Tolinda and Linda with the Preferent predicate!!!
Kadence is bred like your Famous, with Famous being a full sister to Kadence's dam Godiva I understand. Both, Godiva and Famous are daughters of Volckmar paired with Tolinda.
Not sure that your mare Notorious is any heavier than Natuur...:) Nattie Sue, as she's lovingly referred to, can make the ground shake when she shows off her trot and canter!! :D

Hi Indy-lou! I would love to see photos of your Wanroij mare!
As to the Wanroij's versatility.........When I began breeding KWPN horses 20 years ago, I started with a very high quality TB mare, and bred her to Wanroij. That breeding resulted in our first Dutch foal, Insignia. He was awarded a First Premium at our First Keuring.
Insignia, now almost 20 years old, is still sound, and is still winning in the "A" shows, showing yet another young rider the ropes! Photos and Sport Results of this special gelding can be seen at:
http://www.sportingchancefarm.com/previous_clients_and_their_horse.htm
Insignia's full sister Jolie (now Preferent, and the foundation of our KWPN breeding program) was successful at both the rated hunter shows, and was also a winner at DAD in hand and under saddle during her short career (we bred her as a 3yr old). Jolie Preferent's offspring have all been dual talented, from such sires as Idocus Crown(6 times!), Goodtimes, Ferro, Balou du Rouet, UB40, and even our homebred Zulft Ster. At 18 years old, Jolie looks eight, and is back in foal to Goodtimes. She has been sound and healthy every day of her life!
Jolie Preferent can be seen with many of her offspring at: http://www.sportingchancefarm.com/jolie.htm

I breed my mare, Never Say Never, for jumpers now. Jumping ability is a very heritable trait from the mare, and this mare absolutely loves to jump. When she was under saddle, the rule was don't ever line her up with a jump unless you planned to go over it.
Winnie's son, Ulysses (by Ferro), as a 6 year-old jumped a line of five 1.5 meter verticals clear with room to spare. The owner had him at a Nelson Pessoa clinic, and at the end of the clinic, Nelson was determining whether Ulysses was Grand Prix material. After that demonstration, he said most certainly he was. He also said, whoever started this horse did an excellent job. I made sure that got back to my trainer here in Nova Scotia.

Hi to all, and congratulation to all of you who have participated in the keuring this year. I am a new member/breeder and attended my first keuring at ISF. My yearling Destiny managed to get a first premium as well. I am so proud, not only of her but, of my entire family for the many hours of training it took to get us there. They all helped me to achieve this impossible task. I was so over whelmed that day; I took my ribbon and flew out of there. Latter, I realized, I didn’t take the opportunity to speak to the jury. Perhaps, they would have told me what they thought of my filly. I also regret not meeting more people. The keuring was, as someone earlier posted, terrifying for me. I’m glad it’s over.

Just catching up on the keuring results, a second Harness type bred horse was presented as received a 1st premium as a Gelders horse. Belsjarona is 25% American Saddlebred, clearly out of line with this statement from the KWPN-NA Registration Possibilities chart in the Handbook:
In order to be eligible for registration as a Gelders type: the pedigree of the horse to be registered cannot exceed more than 12.5% improvement blood, of which a maximum of 6.25% may be American Saddlebred or Hackney. If the percentage of improvement blood is higher than 12.5% but less than 25%, registration will be in Register A of the Gelders book. The horse may be accepted into the Gelders Studbook by decision of the jury.
So why are these horses being permitted to change breeding direction to Gelders? Are the owners requesting it because they feel it is more marketable to call their horse a Gelderlander instead of a Dutch Harness Horse? Is it so they can opt to do the dressage test instead of the harness test if the wish to try to achieve their horse's keur status? Or does the jury really feel that despite these horse's breeding that they really are more Gelders type than Harness?

The complete keuring results have been posted on the KWPN-NA website:
http://www.kwpn-na.org/display/files/ALL_RESULTS_2009.pdf
The heading says "2008", but that is a typo. It is "2009".
