Didn't someone recently post a link to pet foster for deployed military?

A friend of mine and I want to sign up to take in some dogs if needed, but I can't find the link.

Do you have a lot of military in your area? We have deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan every month or so.

I haven't heard much either, but we don't have a large military base nearby.

Also, not hearing something makes me think (hope) that most people have some options for their pets.

I know that in our family, my youngest brother took my oldest brother's dog when he deployed and then had to move to Hawaii.

I've done military fosters for a couple of years. One pair I've done 3 times! Actually, she just picked up her babies about a week ago, and she said I've had them more than she has. Sad but true. I'm hoping she doesn't have to go back for a while.

Be very careful tho. One of her babies had to have surgery the first time we had them. The cost was a little over 4K....luckily I was able to email her and she called me right back from Iraq, telling me to do whatever he needed, He needed surgery for a liver shunt (she knew this might happen). And, I figured she'd want it done since she flew back with them from Germany to bring them to me. She's a super great mom to those puggies.

But, make sure you know what limit they might have on vet bills! The ones I've fostered had contacted my pug rescue group looking for someone to keep their dogs, so I felt pretty comfortable taking them.

I know on the local craigslist I see soldiers looking for someone to foster, but I've never contacted any of them.

Tweeter, how have you gotten hooked up with these people? Through a group or just privately?

There isn't much military presence in NE FL apart from a Naval station so that would be why. Generally speaking, the need for it has gone down quite a bit.

I work with MidAtlantic Pug Rescue. They wrote to MAPR looking for someone to foster.

One was a foster gone bad. She'd left her two pugs with someone who decided mid-tour they couldn't keep them. When her family went to pick them up, the food was old, full of maggots, and the pugs were filthy. Her mom had been keeping them, but had serious breathing problems, and had to hire someone to walk them a couple of times a day because she worked. Anyway, we had them for 6 months. They were very sweet boys.

The other two were in Germany, their mom flew them over to us. First tour she was gone about 14 months, was back for about 6 months, then was gone for 18. This time she was gone about 7 months. Fortunately, she's at Ft Eustis, so we get to see our "grandpugs" when we want.

It's been a wonderful experience. It is a huge responsibility, but it's very rewarding as well. Like I said, I'd just be sure that whoever is deploying is willing to pay vet expenses, especially in case an emergency comes up.

We have NAS Jacksonville, NAS Mayport (which has carriers/battle groups based out of it), Kings Bay Sub Base in Ga, several Air Natl Guard groups, military reserve units etc etc. My husband has done 4 tours to Iraq and is currently deployed. We have military in NE FL out the yang. They closed NAS Cecil Field but that's all. The other bases are thriving and well.
And there is the base in Pensacola, which is only a few hours away.

But even if they aren't stationed in Jax, if they can get me the critter I would be glad to help. I will foster anything but cats and reptiles, and stallions.
