I wanted some input on leasing some property.
I have the opportunity to lease some land that has a run in shed and water facilities. storage for tack and hay.
My question is I wont be out there every day. Im looking at once to twice a week. There wont be any daily care for the horses, but someone is available on a emergency basis. There will be people living on the property, but will not be responsible for any care.
Is it even possible to keep them without daily supervision?
If so is there anything that should be considered with this arrangement besides horror stories.
I know growing up we had horses on a property for some time that we would only go out 2x a month and they did fine.
Now that im older just want to make a responsible decision.

Yes, they'd probably be fine with a 150 gallon water trough (or other big water source) and free choice pasture or a hay roll for a day or two without supervision/checking on BUT....can you handle that? I know I couldnt.

Self-care arrangements like this (which I technically do) mean that I or Mr. ChocoMare are there every single day to feed, refill water, chuck hay when needed, pick poop, give the mares the once over, etc. etc. etc.

Perhaps consider hiring a friend to stop by on the days you can't OR get another trusted self-care boarder to join you to cover for you.

Personally, I couldn't do it. I had a horse once in a pasture situation with others her age, but they were checked on/fed twice daily, and brought in when weather was really wretched. Even then, whenever there was a thunderstorm, or it was really cold out, I'd have trouble sleeping, wondering if my girl were okay.

I think if you're used to having your horses in a situation where there's at least daily supervision, you won't be comfortable with the scenario you describe.
