Well, that stray thing happened to me. I'm hoping someone here could point me in the right direction...

I took in a stray -- a 1 year-old Border Collie mix -- who's been wandering around my near-downtown Nashville neighborhood for a few days. While my neighborhood has a contingent of wily, street-savvy strays, this dog is not one of them. He has all the signs of being someone's pet until very recently -- collar (no tags) and recent neutering and vet care for a hot spot. He is also friendly to the point of being clingy. He is not microchipped.

I'm only a part-time resident of Nashville and don't know the area well. I'm also leaving for Canada in a few days so my time is limited.

I've listed the dog everywhere I can think of and will put flyers out today. However, I really can't keep him here with me as space-wise it's very difficult (no yard, 2 other dogs) and I'm only in town for a few more days. Can anyone recommend a rescue or private rescuer who I should contact about this guy?

(I have been advised not to bring him to Metro Animal Control, although I have notified them.)

Any help with local resources is very much appreciated. I'm hoping his owner is looking for him but I realize that's probably wishful thinking.

http://www.bordercollierescueofmiddletn.com/ might be a place to start. (It has music & no easy off button. Not crazy music, but it still bugs me and if you're at work beware)

http://www.bordercollierescuetn.com/ is another one, they call themselves East TN BC Rescue.

http://www.gis.net/~shepdog/Other_BCR_Web_Sites.html (http://www.gis.net/%7Eshepdog/Other_BCR_Web_Sites.html) is the national site, they may be able to give you a contact too.

Good luck!

ETA one more, from a no-kill network site. http://www.nokillnetwork.org/d/Tennessee/ I see there's a listing in Franklin TN, which might be helpful, tho if they're anything like down here (Chattanooga-ish) no-kill shelters are full to bursting :(

Thanks, saje!

I'm making calls...

Oh and here's a photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/28168510@N07/3881934466/), just for a little heartstring-tugging...

If he had recent vet care, could you email his photo to vet clinics in the area to see if anyone recognizes him and might have ownership info? Longshot, I know, but just a thought. Let us know how it goes.

He's really cute!

SevenDogs, I'm doing that. Good thinking...

We've had a surge in strays in my neighborhood in the last week. We suspect it's people moving and abandoning pets. I just helped catch and clean an unneutered male pit bull with a too-tight collar and cuts on his ears.

Meanwhile, the border collie x is getting comfortable here. He's still a bit bewildered, like he doesn't know what happened to him. We've had some interest from a neighbor, so I'm hopeful he'll get a home quickly.

Last night, he decided to sleep in my smaller dog's bed. Well, sort of. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/28168510@N07/3884292231/) (This is my smaller dog (http://www.flickr.com/photos/28168510@N07/3660611893). I shouldn't need to tell you which dog is the alpha.)

JER, what IS that? It may be the cutest thing on four legs! (I do not know my small dog breeds at all)

Hope everyone gets sorted out ...

I would say someone must be really missing that dog.:(
I would second getting a phone book out and calling all vets about this, in case someone may know if they operated on him and who is the owner.
Too bad we don't have some central place to list missing dogs.

He sure looks very adoptable, maybe someone will take him in.

That is a Papillon-Chihuahua mix.

Don't be fooled by the cute fur and the broken leg. This is one tough dog. He's 15 now but was an excellent hunter (of moles, especially) and will always help find and round up my rabbits if they get out.

My friend trains dogs for TV and movies and thought he had real star quality. When I found him, she offered to take him on but I liked him too much and kept him. Whenever she sees him now, she says "You could have made so much money."

(He prefers to be paid in roast chicken.)

What is it with roasted chicken?
That is also my dog's favorite.:)

I would have guessed he was a westie mix.

Whatever he is, I agree that he is star material.

He tips the scale at 6 lbs. No room for Westie blood.

My other dog (http://www.flickr.com/photos/28168510@N07/3885319396/) is a mystery to us. Genetic testing revealed nothing except that she is, in fact, a dog. The company apologized profusely. We suspect she's 1/2 Maltese and 1/2 unknown terrier (she has terrier teeth). But really, she looks like a Muppet and acts like she's from the shelves of ToysRUs. Her microchip is probably a barcode for a stuffed animal called Princess Notsobrite. But she is cute. And simple.

(I swear I'm not a lapdog person. These dogs were both strays.)

The stray is so cute! And no, I do not need another dog.

If you need a place to put him, you could contact Heidi at Red Rover (www.redrovercomeover.com) and tell her he is also available for adoption. She has a bunch of rescue contacts. But yes, all of the low- and no-kill shelters around here are crazy full.

I have a feeling that he is not just lost, although I could be wrong...

I called Heidi's place (she's moved over to my part of town) and talked to one of her workers but I'll call again and ask about rescues.

And you are right. The rescues are overflowing. I get very few calls returned and the outgoing message is usually that they're not accepting animals.

I think he was let go at the end of the month, probably by someone moving who couldn't keep him. We've had a surge in strays in Germantown, both cats and dogs. A number of my neighbors also have rescued animals in their care.

Very sadly, we called Metro Animal Services to pick up the male pit bull I mentioned in my earlier post. He's in a backyard kennel awaiting pickup. I gave him some raw rabbit for dinner. He's sweet but boisterous and he's a pit bull. After all the calls I've made this week, I know there's no chance of placing a young, un-neutered male pit bull. My neighbor pushed for letting him go but I couldn't do that if he's (1) got some fighting injuries and (2) not neutered.

So you can't save them all. But I did catch and transport an injured kestrel last week and I'm determined to find a home for this border collie mix.

He'll do best as an only dog, even though he's good with other dogs. What he really, really wants is an owner to bond with. He lies at my feet with his head on my foot and rides in the car in the back seat with his paw on my shoulder. He likes the contact.

If you know anyone who might be interested, please pass on his info.

:)
