View Full Version : Is it possible to register this Welsh pony?

I would like to do in-hand breed showing (as well as dressage!). I've found an UN registered palomino Welsh gelding that seems like a good fit riding-wise. However, they told me that the previous owners did not give them the papers when they purchased him 3-4 years ago. He is definitely pure Welsh (a Section B). Is there any way I could get him registered with the WPCSA, or the AWR/ASPR (American Warmblood/Sport Pony registries)? Also, can you even do in-hand showing with a gelding, because they cannot breed?

Yes you can do in hand showing and dressage riding classes with an unregistered horse. (and with a gelding as well-in hand classes up to 3 years old)

You can get him registered with the ASPR without papers. You can check out their website for more info www.americansportpony.com

Check with the WPCS and see if the parents are registered and proceed from there.

Unfortunately, the current owner doesn't have any of that info on him.

If you can determine IF he is registered, then track down the last registered owner, perhaps you could get the papers signed over to you. Alternatively, I'd look for the stallion owner and see if they can help you identify him.
The Welsh shows have big, competitive gelding classes for in-hand, and of the course the geldings can compete in English and Western Pleasure, Pleasure and Carriage Driving, Hunters, Trail, etc. The Welsh shows are a lot of fun.
Tell us what you do know about him and maybe it will spark an idea on who else you could contact.

All that I know is that his (apparent) current show name is Popcorn and a Movie, and a girl named Marissa Mass owns him, and has for the last 3 1/2 years. Sorry; I know that probably doesn't help much. But it's all I know. And she doesn't remember (nor do her parents) the contact info for his previous owner. Would be possible to maybe DNA test him and submit it to the Welsh registry and have them see if it matches any of the stallions on record? Just a thought--I'm new to this. :)

nope, I think you are out of luck
you'll need a signed transfer from the last "official" owner..and many welsh folks are not in the habit of filling out paperwork years after a sale/transfer to a third or fourth party
then there is the transfer fee ($)
and a new set of registration papers ($)
and finally you or the last owner will need to be a member ($)
or you will have to pay the higher rates for all the above ($)
is he really worth all that ??

I think you are out of luck with the Welsh registry, but you don't need to know any info on the parents other than their breed for the ASPR. I registered a welsh/paint mare that I purchased as a yearling with unknown parents. I did take her to get inspected but I can't remember if that was even required.
