I'm getting ready to make the big purchase, but still have some questions. I need mats with good traction, since my stalls open onto pastures. What are your thoughts on the mat surface - diamond plate (and if so, raised or inverted), honeycomb, etc.? What are your thoughts on the surface of the underside of the mats - flat, small channels/scored, etc.? Thickness of mats - 5/8", 3/4", etc. (mats will be over stone dust on top of hard packed dirt)? Any recommendations as to manufacturers (including web sites/contact info)? Thanks!

Get the heavy mats like the ones from Tractor Supply Co. We had the very light mats that fit together. Our big, active, horses kept sending the light mats flying. We are happy with the heavy, 4'x6', mats from Tractor Supply.

YES! Not a bad price either.

Go for the heavy ones for sure! They wear so, so much better than many of the felt-like products available today, and they actually stay in place.

over stone dust you don't need to worry as much about drainage channels undneath, so if the flat backed matts are cheaper get them. Our matts are 4 x 6 and 5 x 7 and 3/4 inch thick- the big ones weigh 150 lbs I am sure and I can't move them by myself. Nor can the horses. They have a fine diamond texture on one side and flat on the other- we put the flat side up because it is easier to clean- a little slippery if wet with no bedding on top, but isn't usually wet, so no problem. For better traction we'd put the texture side up, but even in my wash stall they are not really slippery- I've never had a horse slip although I slipped once or twice. Some of ours are 14 years old now and in constant daily use, still not worn out.
