What are his foals like? Are there any competing in upper level dressage? What kind of mare should he be bred to?

Just an FYI, the Hohenstein frozen is terrible so the only way realistically to get a foal by him is to import or breed a mare in Germany using fresh (and the fresh is not great either).

Regarding the stallion, though, he is known for producing excellent temperaments and rideability, typiness, and ability for collected work. Generally I think his offspring have excellent walks and canters, and their trots have lots of suspension but not a lot (if any) knee. I have a Hohenstein mare and my experience with her is consistent with these observations.

In terms of what kind of mare he needs - I would want one with a powerful hind end and quick hind leg that can sit. I also would pick one that has a bit more pizazz in the gaits. Hohenstein has crossed beautifully with Donnerhall mares, for example. I would take care to use a more modern mare, though, as Hohenstein can produce a bit heavy (though not always; my own mare is quite refined).

Donarweiss, owned by Greengate Farm, stands at Hilltop Farm and is ridden by Chris Hickey. He is a De Niro/Hohenstein if you want to see one here. He also has quite a few offspring including a couple that my girlfriend and I have. We have been very impressed by him as a performance horse and as a sire. You can read about him here (http://www.hilltopfarminc.com/stallion_donarweiss_ggf.html).

Our stallion Lion King is out of a Hohenstein mare and he has the nicest disposition. A truely fun and easy horse to deal with in any situation. His sire is Latimer.
