View Full Version : RPSI Question...Inspection Related

This is probably a totally silly/stupid question...but since it comes from someone who's never owned anything but off the track tb's...I'm hoping to learn more about the inspection and registration system for my future reference (in the hopes that in the coming years I may own a nice enough mare to choose to breed one foal as my personal long term sporthorse).
If a mare was approved or registered with RPSI, and bred to a stallion who was not approved or registered with the RPSI...would you be able to bring the foal to be inspected and then approved?? And what would be the neccessary documentation to allow the foal to be fully registered and branded with the RPSI?
Also, would it make a difference if the mare was granted registration/approval based on both her parents being registered and approved vs. the mare being something like an OTTB who gets approved into the mare book for breeding purposes?
Thanks all...I know I've probably made this as confusing as possible, but I appreciate any/all input and help. I'm really trying to learn all I can about different registries and such before making a decision as to whether I aim for getting a TB mare, or an already registered WB mare in a couple years.

Thanks Jasmine...I'm really just getting info...don't have a mare or stallion picked out right now. Very likely I would want to use a stallion who is approved or registered with one of the European registries (thinking about Briar for a dressage foal or Nector for an eventing type foal).
The mare thing is why I'm waffling on what to do...my first instinct is to get another off the track mare, get her trained and put her through an inspection to see about getting her approved in a registry before ever breeding her to any stallion. But then I'm also considering just getting an older broodmare type who has already been through an inspection and is registered so I don't have to deal with worrying about whether she'll pass or not.
I appreciate the info and the help!

With a TB mare, you'd have quite a few registry choices. RPSI is one option if it's close to you but check out the registry of the stallion you want to use and you may save some money since there are usually fees involved in using stallions that are not approved by their own registries.
BWP, OLD-NA, and GOV all inspect TBs very fairly. Holsteiner and Hanoverian do inspect TBs but are quite strict. My understanding is that KWPN does not even require an inspection for TB mares.
As for outside stallions....
BWP accepts fully licensed stallions from other Euro registries
Not sure about GOV or OLD-NA but they've got TONS of choices. I'm fairly certain they make some allowances since I know Lotus T has sired GOV foals and was not inspected GOV....
Holsteiner, Hanoverian and KWPN require you to use their stallions.

If the stallion is approved with another major European regisrty (ex: AHS, GOV, etc), RPSI will inspect, brand & issue full registration papers on the foal. All that is needed is the breeding certificate from the stallion owner & a copy of the mare's papers.

Just an outside suggestion. If your end goal is to produce a foal that would become your long-term sporthorse, you might want to consider the fact that by the time you pay for the mare, stud fee, additional collection fees if needed, vet fees, inspections fees, etc. it may be just as financially feasible to by an in-utero foal from one of the many top notch breeding farms ($4,500 - $6,500). Many times these farms will offer a choice of in-utero breedings for purchase out of nice, proven mares to wonderful stallions. Buying an OTTB mare who has never had a foal can be risky and you can eliminate some risk by being able to see what the mares have already produced and know that the mare is definitely in foal. Not to mention you have the knowledge of the breeding farm/stallion owners to draw on. There are many farms here in the U.S. that would be willing to help in this situation.
If you are going for the breeding experience of purchasing a mare and choosing a stallion, don't be hesitant to approach the stallion owner/farm for suggestions, and many will help you find the appropriate mare and appropriate registry. Hope that helps a little.

I agree with SilverCreek. Of course, there is nothing like foaling out your mare and having the pleasure of stallion shopping etc.
I bought a foal this year rather than breeding my mare again, trying for my 'dream foal'. I would recommend it to everyone!!
