View Full Version : Sunburning Vulva

My poor Appy mare gets her vulva sunburned. She Could stay in the shade but won't.
I can't keep them in the barn during hot hot weather.
She has pigment over her muzzle and around her eyes (use as mask anyhow) but has that baby bottom pink vulva. This can't be good.
Can anyone suggest some kind of protection I could smear on her each day that wouldn't cause an infection?

Desitin works great on sunburned noses and since it's originally designed for baby bottoms anyways, I don't see how it could hurt a mare's bottom ;)

A fly sheet with tail flap would work well I bet.

The desitin! If I remember correctly it's thick and white? If it's what I'm thinking of it would be thick enough to block the sun wouldn't it?

Thought about the fly sheet but am afraid my gelding would have that shredded in no time.
He is one that thinks EVERYTHING can be turned into a toy.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had thought about sunscreen but didn't think that sounded like a really good idea there. :)

Desitin -- yes. And don't buy the generic stuff. Nothing sticks like the real thing!

Does she not have a tail?

 Indeed she does but it's not a full or flowing tail it's just a decent "appy type" tail.
The dock always looks as if it's been nicely pulled and she doesn't carry her tail flat so sunshine does peek right under there. :)

Will do. Thank you!

OUCH! Poor Girl!

Zinc oxide cream too if the desitin doesn't work.

I wonder about children's nonscented sunblock/sunscreen SPF 45?

Desitin is zinc oxide

Ok. That's the American product. I don't think Canada gets it under the label of Desitin. At least, I've never seen it up here but maybe in some of the bigger centres. :)

Any sun screen ought to be o.k. Spray on might be easier to apply.

I would try the Desitin, though I always buy the generic stuff. It seems to last for 2 days even in the FL sun on muzzles. Better than sunscreen anyway.

Zinc oxide works on every other part of the horse's body, it should work there.

Desitin, which has zinc oxide in it. Doesn't "stick" or stay on as well as zinc oxide, so you'll need to apply more than once a day.

Can you use electrical tape to fence your mare off from the sunny pasture to a spot under the trees for the daytime, then take the tape down at night? Those plastic posts you can push into the ground and tape will work with most horses.

I disagree, the generic is just fine. Just make sure you get the kind that is thicker, more like a paste. They have a word on the package for that but it's not coming to me right now.

I agree, generics are fine.

I use Target's brand of diaper rash ointment on my kids. It's very sticky and should work well on a horse butt too. Anything labled as "creamy" will wipe off too easily.

Maybe you found a different generic brand, but I bought the 40% zinc oxide knock-off and it didn't stick worth a crap. Desitin original formula sticks like nobody's business.

What's fun about these cremes is you can make war paint hand prints on your horse when you're done rubbing it on.

That's the word I was looking for..."creamy".

Hmmm, see above, maybe that was the problem??? Ha ha I thought I was the only one who played "dress up" afterward.:lol:

I didn't get the "creamy" style, but it works for war paint just the same.:)
