I want to stabilize a muddy path from the barn to the turnout. Over the summer the horses have dug a rut that is now the low spot and fills with water when it rains. I want to fix this before winter because then it will just be ice.

If I just throw some gravel down, they will dig that right up. Whatever is right in front of the barn door ends up in the aisle and I have to sweep it back out. So I saw this ring mat and thought it might work if I fill it with stone dust or dirt. When you click to see additional images under the main image they show how it can be filled with sand/gravel etc.

Has anyone used this before? Does it work? Do you think it would be slippery when wet?

I have it in my stalls and it is fantastic, but would love to put it in front of gates where it gets mucky. I know people who have used it for outside applications and it is very effective. Fill it with stone dust after putting down properly.

The stable grid is what I was looking for, but I could only find the FarmTek one. It doesn't sound like you have to dig down into the dirt to set the stable grid (unlike geotextile fabric which needs quite a depth dug out IIRC...) Do you happen to know how much the stable grids cost?

But the lady who runs the company is very responsive. You would need to scrape it flat and put some stone dust or gravel down, then the grids, then fill w stone dust. Or dirt, I suppose. Putting them down properly and flat will make it better in the long run. I've had them down for 5 years and not one has moved or shifted.
Give them a call.
