In Maryland, it seems to be 'giant yellowjacket from hell' season, and my girl has been coming in with absolute welts from either those or some kind of nasty biting critter. On was smack on her spine towards her butt, but it was so big that I wasn't sure if I should even ride.
I got some (human) benadryl anti-itch gel, and it seems to take these big bugbite welts right down in a very short time. It made me feel like a good horse mom to see 'em less swollen in about half an hour.

I use benedryl cream on my own bug bites and itchy skin. It works very well. I've never tried it on my horse but it's a great idea.

Yup Yup, been using the benadryl gel on my allergy prone mare to try to get her to stop rubbing her mane and tail raw. It really seems to help!
Can't wait for the allergy shots to come!!

I use generic diphenhydramine cream . I keep it for both myself and my horse. Cortisone cream as well.
Do be careful if you show, these creams can uptake into circulation or can potentially coss contaminate.

thank you, hoopoe, good to know.
Since we have just achieved the 5 minutes of trotting during suspensory rehab bronze medal, not a worry, for a while. :-)
I was just plain amazed at how effective it was..

It is really effective. My horse was covered in bumps one day. It may have been from her shavings, I don't know. I gave her some of the tablets and the next day they were completely gone.

Wow. I want to try that Benedryl gel on my guy's tail. He's always itching it with his allergies.

I dont think we have that up here in Canada. I'll have to check at the drug store today and see ...
My stallion came in with this honking huge welt on his neck a few days ago and I figured he got stung by a wasp amd I guess he's been itching it hard enough there is an open area the size of a quarter on it now. And the SWAT cream doesnt seem to be helping much either
Thanks for the tip!

I've used both the gel and the spray, spray is easier to apply, and both work well.
For those of you that don't have it available, can you find anything with the active ingedient? It is Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride. Or maybe order online from Drugstore.com?

I use hydrocortisone spray for dogs, which works really well :

I just wished I could find a larger size bottle.
