I'm looking into bringing a lethal white deaf aussie to my home here in Ontario. He is located in Georgia. Does anyone know what I need, or what has to be done prior to me bringing him across the border?

I will have to drive down to get him.

All help is appreciated!

Perhaps not advisable but....I say nothing :)

My last three Dobes came from Chicago, Detroit and Detroit. I always make sure to have the basic vaccs done and the paperwork to prove it but unless they poke and prod....say nothing and you will be fine.

People travel cross-boarder with dogs all the time so it isn't unusual. I just say I have been on a day visit to aunty ethel.

If you say you have adopted you will pay tax and duty on the adoption fee and probably get questioned a bit more.

Either way, make sure you are bringing a dog that is up to date on its routine vaccs and you should be ok.

It may also be helpful while it is at the vet getting shots to get a health certificate done. For driving up to canada you should be fine with a domestic travel one, which basically says the animal is not carrying any contagous diseases and is healthy overall. It's usually about $40 to get it done, and jsut gives you a little peace of mind if they start asking questions.

Thanks for the advice. he's already vaccinated so I would probably only need to get a health cert. Now to get to GA!

If you're driving, the dog just needs a rabies cert or tag.

I cross the border quite often with my dogs and have never been asked to show any proof of anything. (I've also gone back and forth with a cat and rabbits -- I couldn't get the border folks interested in them.)

If you have any questions, call the vet at the border (agriculture department) and they're usually very helpful over the phone.

There must be a way for you to get in touch with the various dog transports that crisscross the country and come into Canada. I sometimes transport dogs that come from the US and all they seem to need if proof of vac. and health certificate.
BlackLabs I know is involved with this kind of rescue railroad. My transport always seem to originate in KY/OH and go as far as Peterborough, Ottawa.

interesting, that would be ideal. I'll have to do some more research.

Just get the paperwork and volunteer NOTHING.

I went to the states with a friend to pick up an adopted dog. The "private rescue" we went to was, erm, interesting but all the dogs seemed happy and healthy. On the way home I looked at the vacc papers and tags and realized they were for a completely different dog (slightly older, different name).

When we got the border all they asked where we'd gone (we named the town), and if we'd bought anything (we had - I'd hit the tack shop on the way down for cheap dewormer), and that was IT. Best part was that the dog was dead silent in the back of the SUV... I don't think the guy at the border had any idea he was back there.

And yes, the friend isolated the dog that night, and took him to the vet the next morning for a whole new round of vacc's...
