The stock ties that have a sort of pleated ruffle, insted of the traditional knot:
Does the pin go on the bit of fabric that is like a loop that the ruffles go through? Or does it go in the traditional spot?

Some that I have seen in catalogs (Dressage Extensions for one) have an
embellishment on the 'band' where the pin would go in a traditional stock tie.
You would not use a pin with these, of course.
If it is plain, the pin goes on the 'band' that gathers the material at the neck.
I bought a Euro style stock tie (plain) and added an embellishment of my own
so I won't be using a pin. You could go that route. Another way to
add a bit of individuality is to string a few beads of choice , add necklace circle
'clips' (whatever they are called) to both ends and sew two metal 'eyes'
(half of a hook and eye team) to each end on the band. This way you can
have several 'looks' and just take them off for washing.
