SHE IS HOME!! She came home last night! Vet says as long as she stays on her special diet and has consistantsy she is going to be fine. She was so happy in her new stall beside her daughter and next to her new stable buddys. Her owner hasn't stopped grinning and I wanted to just cry with joy seeing how happy my friend and her children were. Oh, and the good lord was looking out for my friend, JUST as she was parking her trailer to un-load the mare her truck DIED!!
Happy endings all around. Tnx for all the Jingles and prayers!!
Please send jingles and prayers our way. My friend's (who is also my husband's comanding officer's wife) old mare (24) is colicing. She is another that is boarded at the ranch from my not so good post. This colic is from obvious bad management of feed and water. I will explain how we know this later. She has been to two vets today and is now being hand walked in base housing. We are to the "hurry up and wait" phase. I am on my way there now to share the duty and the stress of it.
This poor woman is having a rough time of it; not only is her husband deployed but her mother just had cancer surgery last week and her youngest son has developed health problems. I fear for how she will hold up if her mare doesn't pull through.
I will update you all with hopefully good news.

I am home till 6 am when we haul her back to the vet. Still no poop, lots and lots of banamine, but at least not trying to go down and gums are still pink.
I am hoping for an overnight miricle so friend doesn't have to make the decision. However if she needs to she has accepted my offer to have it done at my place where it is private with no prying eye.
More news tomorrow. Sigh.

Current update:
The Mare has been ultra-sounded and x-rayed. She has a food blockage. Vet says it would have been brought on by not enough water, the owner's horses are the only 2 receiving full care at ranch as she was going out of town for mothers cancer surgery, and as she was out of town for 10 days she has no idea how much if any the mare was drinking or if her buckets had been cleaned or if she was drinking algae water. BO's are being defensive and won't give answers so she doesn't even have any info for the vet :(
So at this point the old girl is on an IV every 4 hours and hand walking. She has passed a little bit a manure, but still no interest in food or water. But since she is finally passing after about 28 hrs and was put on an IV as soon as she was seen to be colicing we are holding onto hope! I just keep remembering my surgical vet telling me that my Big Guy didn't lose any of his gut because we started and IV so quickly so I really hope that is the case here. Oh, and owner has already decided not to go surgical due to the age of the Mare as well as EPM and the mare does have cancer; she has several melanomas removed every year.
Tnx for all the jingles. We aren't out of the woods, but it's not so dark in there right now!

Sending jingles. The vets and everyone at Chino Valley (assuming that's where she is?) did a great job with my horse last November and were able to resolve his impaction medically. It did take almost two days (two very long days, I might add) to resolve.

Peggy; Tnx for the reassurance. Yes she is at Chino. Our location is so remote from any Equine Specialist it is just scary.
I will pass on the good word about Chino.

When Star was there they said it could take several days to resolve.
We are really close to the clinic which was a good thing in terms of getting him there (literally led him down the road) and visiting him. Dr. Brower was Star's main vet.

UPDATE!!!
Got word this morning that the vet at Chino is cautiously opptimistic! Says the mare hasn't been showing anymore signs of pain as well! So things are looking up.
Also, friend pulled other mare from the ranch and moved her to a friend's place. This friend also has an older horse who is on the same diet as the Mare will be when she comes home. The base vet also keeps his horse there so we all feel much better about the entire situation.

It really does. I sooo hope this mare pulls through, bless her heart. Please do keep us updated. My yearling filly had a mild colic about 6 months ago and my heart was in my throat.
She had been seen rolling in a mud puddle in the afternoon prior to me arriving to bring her in for the night and, gotta admit, wondered why it didn't register a red flag with anyone!? Brought her into her stall where, normally, she would dig into her night feed and she just laid down. Zero interest in her food. Uh oh.
Started walking her, called several vets, left messages, couldn't get anyone there fast. Raced to a friend's house to get oral banamine.. not ideal but all we could get...and continued to keep her moving. No manure, no gas, just a really uncomfortable filly. It eventually turned out well and she's a gorgeous young lady now who has stolen my heart.
Jingles for your mare. My thoughts are with her and her peeps.

:( Mare is not eating very well since last night.
They are scoping her again today. And also the manure she has been passing still isn't any new manure, still just passing small amounts of her blockage.
Thankyou all for your good thoughts through this.
