A farmer's son from the village of Pettling in the Upper Bavaria region of Germany made use of materials found on the farm to make his proposal of marriage to his girlfriend a memorable one.
Twenty-seven year old Markus Schmidt formed 150 bales of hay into the words: "Will you marry me?"
The romantic giant proposal was a success, as Schmidt reported.
His girlfriend, 27-year-old Corinna Pesl, saw the 70m long message while looking out of the bedroom window, and she said: "Yes, of course."
Schmidt got the hay bales from his parents' farm - each one weighs 300kg and each letter is 3.50m high.
Schmidt said that his friends and his brother had already made spectacular marriage proposals, such as words being mowed into fields, and so he decided to try something himself.
Schmidt works at car maker Audi, and often helps at his parents' farm.
After four months of waiting for a chance to assemble the bales, an opportunity finally presented itself.
While his girlfriend was out at work in a bookshop, Schmidt and his younger brother worked for six hours to get the "hay proposal" finished.
Two tractor engines were used to complete the work.
The next morning, Schmidt got down on his knees and proposed in the usual way, before throwing open the shutter to reveal his creation.
The couple, who have been together for nine years, plan to have a civil marriage ceremony this autumn, and a church wedding next year.

Oh very cool! Just watched the video, I had assumed the proposal was spelled out flat on the ground. I was wrong! :D
I'd have said yes too...and then stacked it in my barn.
My sister got an engagement horse ages ago. Her BF knew she wasn't a jewelry fan and instead bought her an Appy mare. He brought her to the barn and when she walked into the aisle (she was coming to go riding with me) there was Ginger with a big sign around her neck:
"I'm an engagement ring, I hope I fit! Marry me?"
Very cute but still not as creative as that hay bale proposal!

Wow, that is creative.
I, like MB thought it meant he put them out flat. Very creative stacking!

Cute!
My proposal was kind of horsey itself. It was the evening after my very first show EVER, where I'd gotten a 1st in one of my classes so I was just ecstatic. He proposed that night after dinner. He said that I had had such a great day that he wanted to make it even better. :D

awww so sweet!!
how do i sneakily direct my bf to this thread?
my one friend's fiance proposed at the barn, he knelt down in front of her horse's stall, while it was snowing out (her favorite!) and popped the question. she said yes, and then promptly called me on their way home from the barn. i squealed with excitement!

Well go to his computer, open thread, then walk away. Eventually he should stumble across is. You know this could be your back up if the whole giant red letter thing doesn't work.

Very cute video.
But: if your boyfriend's going to do one of those crazy things, it really has to be HIS idea and not something you tell him you want. How miserable to feel under pressure to do something huge, as if just asking you quietly & privately isn't special enough. Hell, my husband pulled over on a rainy november day in our crappy little Hyyndai and proposed right there on the side of the road. And it's been 14 years of true bliss.

oh i agree! it's not special if i engineer the whole thing myself. and in any case, he's one for long, emotional speeches anyway, so i'm sure he will do just fine by himself. but no theatrics needed, really! i just thought it was super cute. :)
but thanks to the rest of you with the sneaky suggestions, haha! now i know who to come to when it comes to convincing him of other things.

Or you could wait for Sadie Hawkin's Day and do the proposing yourself - that's what I did!!! He said "yes" and almost 17 happily married years later - I'd ask him again!

AND she got 150 bales of free hay! Lucky girl! ;)
"I love you; of course I'll marry you; now, could you get the tractors back out there and go stack all that in the barn? Thanks, hon!"

Oh my gosh, I love this!
My hubby once pressure cleaned a roof in front of our house, I always complained that he does not "show" that he loves me.
He managed to pressure clean "I LOVE YOU!" on the houses roof, that was really special too!

700-pound hay bales? Three per ton?
