Hi All,

Thought you'd might like to here about the new bonus being offered to owners this year at the yearling sales. Now obviously something has to be done about helping owners, but clearly this was not a great benefit to owner breeders like myself.

Here's how it works. Owner forks over 250pds sterling before sale. That was 750 pds sterling to me in July when finding hay and bedding was at it's worst. Then after the sale, I am obliged to have another 250 pds sterling taken out of my money from the sale. New owner then only has to pay 250 pds sterling to make horse eligible before December. Now new owner doesn't have to pay this but I won't be getting my money back.

The races are 40 selected throughout Europe and some money will go to 3yo races. So 4,000 yearlings already in it and 40 races over 2 years. So 3,960 will not be getting any bonus. Funny thing is the SO's think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread - well of course they do, they sure didn't have to pony up any cash. Clearly the first 250pds sterling needed to be paid by the SO but then we sure wouldn't be having this bonus then would we. I'll tell you it would be a great way to shorten up those 150plus books!

But it gets better because the Tatts September yearling sale has a 1000 euro min selling fee. Your entry is 700 euros and you've already paid your 250 pds so you are min selling fee already. If your horse is sold for min bid, and there will be some, you will know get a bill from sales company for the second half of the bonus and your related sales fees. Well that was a brilliant idea wasn't it!

Mine are in later sales, but I'm toying with the idea of not selling at sales and offering owner an all in fee for horse, breaking, and the little things like blacksmith, worming, and vaccs. So owner has no bills until horse heads to his trainer. Myself and a few scant others have stood firm in not doing the bonus for reasons I've outlined. I fully agree owners need an incentive, but this was not the way to go about it. And furthermore, all the selectors had been around already and this was rushed through in just about a month. I might have gotten my head around it had it happended in January.

OK Rant over!
Terri
