There are certain areas in our pastures our horses like to pee - which has led to numerous dead grass spots. Is there anything that can be done besides replanting grass...?

Lime? But if the same things happens with dogs, you will have very green and lush patches next season!

Be thankful your horses are bathroom neat! My Arab had his exact pasture spots to pee in ...NOT the same ones he pooped in. These places changed slightly from year to year. This is the first year with no horse (lost him in December to colic) and in his special bathroom spots the grass is 3' taller than the rest of the pasture. Tall...healthy..deep green. He would go NUTS if he could see it now...

Lime (Lyme?) works on dog spots. It neutralizes the acid from the pee. Add it just before it rains and it will soak into the soil.

Horse urine is nitrogen-rich, so anywhere a horse goes will likely encourage the lucky grass beneath it to grow like crazy. My pastures (and yard after a hack) are dotted with dark green grass spots.

It's not horse-urine that is killing your grass.

Now dog urine, on the other hand WILL kill grass.

Hmm....I'm not sure what is causing the brown dead spots in the grass then if horse pee would encourage growth. We don't have a dog, so there must be something else killing various spots in all our fields....any ideas?

Its def. the urine.... We have to walk through the yard to get to the ring... Horse doesnt get more than 10 steps out of the wash stall and he HAS TO PEE.... The walk from yard to ring now has HUGE dead grass areas... Now we just try to get him to pee where he already has !!
