I wasn't keeping track of the scores, but I think the order of go is listed under the live feed. Sam Adams just had a nice trip. He had a great forward trip and looked like he was having fun out there.

Aug. 21, 2009, 09:15 AM
Yes, it says that she is Chris Stafford. "Chris has been an equestrian journalist for over 30 years. Her reporting has included major events such as the Olympic Games, World Equestrian Games, World Cup Finals and European Championships for multiple international print and broadcast outlets. She is also a photographer, producer, director and voice-over artist for TV and video having produced several equestrian TV programs and videos. Chris produced daily coverage of the 2006 World Equestrian Games for HorseTV where she was VP Production and News Director. She also broadcast live radio commentary from the Sydney Olympic Games for the BBC."
I'm not really a fan... At all.

The commentator is Lysa Burke Horkan...and she seems a bit out of her element. I think she usually does jumper commentary when she does it so maybe she's just a little more unfamiliar with the riders and horses.

I love the fact that most of the riders are wearing some form of formal attire. I expected them to wear formal tomorrow for sure, but this really gives it a nice air of importance and respect that they are wearing it even for the first round (I have no idea if it was asked for in the PL or not).

I got that "USEF Week in Review" email a moment ago and clicked on the video which I thought would link me to the streaming video Equestrian Life is showing, but I couldnt' find it anywhere--so I posted a critical comment because it just doesn't make sense! This is a GREAT development in the sport, but it's like, gee whiz, what a missed opportunity to expose it to more people than those who happen upon this thread. Can't watch the live stream (work internet= s-l-o-w) but I have now seen 2 hunter derbies at Devon and overwhelmingly, if there's one problem that shows up frequently, it's leads/lead changes. Which is so ODD. Best riders, best horses-- and there's a lot of wrong lead?! At Devon, the ring's not even that big?
Rock Star sticks out as one who went around quite a lot 2 years ago on the wrong lead (still got a good score?!) and wasn't alone.
Is it just because the lines aren't simple and straightforward? I don't see nearly the same number of lead issues in handy classes and they also have less straightforward lines?! There were more lead issues in the hunter debry 2 years ago with mostly pros up than there were last year in the A/Os with ammies up. I just find it... inexplicable?!

I think the issue with lead changes is likely due to both the ring size (though not an excuse for other rings, like devon) and even more so due to the broken / indirect lines.
What I found interesting is that they're actually rewarding some well-taken long spots, like for tiziano's round. I guess there's 2 sides of the fence for that one, and I can't really decide what I agree with more for scoring on that. Yes, it's good that your horse is very forward, bold, brave, and willing. Even better that the horse took the long spot with style and grace.
On the other hand, it's generally kind of unsafe and a foolish when the fences get a little on the big side, and especially when jumping natural obstacles, like out in the hunt field (though here the jumps are obviously collapsible, the fences in the REAL hunt field are generally solid. you don't want to get their hind legs caught on those solid fences!) if you are continuously taking long spots, it's more effort that the horse needs to exert without necessity, thus a waste of energy.
So it's interesting to see them rewarding the long spots, as i generally see it as a bad move like most.
Can't wait for tomorrow!

On some of the rounds that were rewarded the way Tiziano's was, I would love to hear what people who were there in person thought -- I was left feeling like it was hard to perceive the qualities that were rewarded in the more forward rides over the live feed. Castello and Hardin Towell were another pair that appeared to be rewarded for a more forward/aggressive ride, but didn't necessarily look as smooth to me as some others, though the horse jumped well.

I didn't mind the forward/aggressive ride so much... What I didn't like about Tiziano's round was the general inconsistency. I'm not wishing I HAD kept a card while I was watching so I could quote what I saw, but I do remember thinking...deep... long... whoa long... holding...deep...ick. It just didn't flow. Like Ebony's round. I thought that horse had a great, forward, "attack" mode about it, and for the purpose of a Derby, I supported that! I was glad to see they didn't penalize her hard for the "wooba" on the inside turn and brought them back because I look forward to seeing that pair again. Can't speak on Hardin's horse, I actually missed more than half the trip unfortunately.

Greystone, yes, good point. I did feel it was hard to justify Tiziano's score even taking into account rewarding forward ride, but at least they do deserve to be in the top 25 and the slate is clean tomorrow night. And thanks for reminding me about Ebony's round - that was a gorgeous one and what a good horse to just keep rolling with it on the rocky inside turn!

If I remember correctly, Argentum went to the top but then was bested by a cuople that followed him? His was my second favourite trip, to Rumba.
My broadcast also occasionally skipped here and there making it hard for me to tell if something happened in front of the jump or not. Annoying, but I won't complain given that I am getting to watch this lovely live FREE coverage!

Not a hunter person at all, but what I liked about Tiziano's round was that he jumped straight, and in the middle of every fence (as best I could see from the live feed); I was supprised by the absence of this in some of the other top horses (i.e., names I recognized from the Chron). So, accuracy. I also liked the adjustability that they demonstrated, though I know consistency is more valued in the hunter world. But in the spirit of the Derby, I thought the adjustability, done smoothly, was a strength. Granted, she did have variability in her spots but nothing that interfered with the flow in a glaring way. And, as a former eventer, I liked the more forward moments.

Tiziano's round was perhaps the only one where I thought the commentator made sensible observations - long, short, long, short. Very nice horse, great rider, but from the view I had on the video (which certainly could be tainted by angle) that was not the type of round I would have scored high 80s and 90 on.
Ha, it's still hunters!
Hope they change the commentator for tomorrow night  (and no, not the english woman doing the interviews!)

Coming from eventerland (you know, the dark side) --might it be that the judges are rewarding the type of canter to the type of fence--IE the brush fence can be jumped with more pace, like our steeplechase fences? Maybe they saw the relation of the type of fence to Tiziano's canter for each one. Just a thought from the xc side of the type of different fences we deal with out there.

I saw the whole thing this morning. Like some posters have mentioned, very few horses had clean changes and/or challenges with their changes. Those who kept a good gallop and stayed forward and straight with riders who kept their balance did well. From the livestream camera angle it often looked like riders were either leaning left or right hence some of the lead swapping before a fence.
I am a huge John French fan. Saw him at Menlo Park not too long ago here in No. Calif.
It was a lovely forward galloping derby course....just as it should be and with a return to the way hunter fences should look like.
In defense of the commentator....she was not informed promptly of the order of go...it changed several times. When you commentate at a show such as this you always have to consider your varied audience...either those present or those watching online. You want everyone to understand what a hunter is and how it's judged. Some people have no clue what a hunter derby is much less the scoring system.
Two things I did notice...only one rider, Louise Serio, when interviewed, thanked those who put this derby together. And only one rider was less than mannerly during her interview. Perhaps she wasn't totally satisfied with her horse or she had more to ride this morning, but really....to be curt and a bit without manners....hmmmm......

I can't say I remember anyone not being polite BUT I'm not sure how humored I would be talking to that lady after a sub par round and having her say "250 was your score, was that the kind of score you were aiming for today?" with a moderately clueless smile on her face. I mean the answer is clearly no, one hopes to do better than 60s from every judge.
I dunno, it just sounded like the ground commentator had a set of questions to ask every predetermined interviewee and she wasn't actually watching...at all. I could see how that would leave me a little peeved!

I didn't hear the answer to that, but I know I would have been inclined to be a bit sarcastic. "Yes ma'am, I came here to be mediocre and score in the 60's across the board. I love missing swaps and chipping in at big horse shows, even better if I do it at a finals event that's broadcast live over the internet. It's just my idea of fun. I'm so glad you asked, bless your heart."
I did like that Louise Serio was so quick to thank everyone who made the Derby a possibility.

This was so much fun to watch! My feed kept going in and out too and I was on early. I think they were more harsh in their scoring near the end. I am glad that they had multiple judges. Isn't it unusual to have them in different areas for the hunters? I was always told that they like to score them from the same vantage point so they "see the same thing." However, the quarter horses do it this way and I think it gives people
a "more fair score." They should have multiple judges for all finals.
If any of the top 25 are "unsound" tomorrow, will they move up any of the others? Just wondered......... a couple of those in the next few had pretty rounds and I thought had very similar rounds to some of the others. :)

I am still amazed to find out that John French is such a big star! I know you all probably think thats funny but I have been w/o COTH for many years and just relaxing trailriding for the longest time and just getting back into hunters and showing. My sister and I showed with John 25-30 years ago when he rode a cute little roan mare that he was really too big for. He was a good rider back then but my sister used to beat him nearly every week on her quarter pony. Wow he has come a long way, will be rooting for John and Rumba tmrw night.

Welcome to televised sports. You asked for it, You got it. Unfortunately it comes with post competition interviews like "how did you feel after you dropped what would have been the winning pass at the 3 yard line","will striking out one run down in the bottom of the ninth with bases loaded and the count 3-0 at one point bother you" or even one I actually heard "did falling off the high bar into the grandstand bother you"?
I will try to catch this later today...that work thing was in the way yesterday. Always remember it's pace and that trumps any kind of pre set notion of distance and even lead changes, keeping it dead on will get the highest score.
Agree with the eventer on the selection of appropriate spots too, depends on what you are jumping and what's next as well as keeping that pace. Fiddling with a lead is going to kill whatever you have pacewise, you have to keep going.

Louise Serio has lost a serious amount of weight from the last time I saw her. I look for her or John French to finish 1 and 2. I have always loved how Louise rides...I so remember that horse, Red Panda....he never went with that standing martingale and was allowed to jump his style.....I am just a fan of the horse going to the jump with less "stuff" on him. And I am more enamored of the American Thoroughbred than the warmbloods in the jumping arenas. This hunter thing is tough.....it's an art and my hat is off to those who do this. I cannot imagine 8-12 jumping efforts in perfect cadence, rhythum and style! I'd never make it! :-)

I gotta say though.. in defense of that trip... So Tiziano can be all over the place and get great scores, but this one, not so much? I didn't catch a long oxer that wasn't off a good gallop, so maybe I missed that, but the change didn't bother me so much. Especially here. That's not what this is all about. It's about a forward gallop, keeping pace, and going for it. The horse jumped brilliantly, had a HUGE open gallop, and was super handy. If that's not what this class is about, then I guess I just have it wrong.
I don't like the commentator AT ALL, but I still think J.W. got ripped.

I don't have no intent nor desire to be a commentator - but there are many folks who just might do a better job - this is the FIRST final - no offense meant but the errors have been huge and it bothers me. Sorry!
Give it meaning - pick up what separates a great round from a not so great - I watched other derbies with live feed and whoever did those - and I can't remember - commented on how the horses jump, etc. with some degree of expertise. I know this person has expertise riding - and very well too - but dang -
nevermind, I will stop kvetching -

howcome some riders are wearing white pants?? is it okay for men or something? it looked like peter was wearing them  i think chase is too. isn't that inappropriate for hunter classics on women, though?

Lovely round by Chase...
Edit: White breeches are formal attire for men in hunter classics, as they do not wear shadbellies.

It's fine for men and considering Peter is a man, it's perfectly appropriate.

Chase's round was beautiful but I'd love to see that horse go forward. It looked like slow motion! Not really my idea for a Derby Final. lol
Who cares if the riders are wearing white pants? White is formal attire. What better excuse is there for hunter riders to wear white? Why should jumpers have all the fun?

I just think that our sport is decades behind other sports for marketing and media savvy on the whole. It's got a lot of catching up to do. And in the hunters? Who would have ever thought that anyone would ever even want to watch them for 2 seconds let alone a whole special broadcast?
I hate when I see bandwagons form and I feel like one is forming against this commentator (I read this whole thread since yesterday). Can you ride better than Lisa Burke? I sure can't. Have you seen the things/sat on the horses she has? I haven't. Could you (the universal you -- not picking on anyone personally) eloquently explain why a swap off is going to take points off? Probably not. Go ahead and try to explain hunters to your average person. It's not easy. Sure you can point and laugh and harshly critique a commentator who isn't even looking at the ring live. But I think that's just way too easy.
I would like to see more people challenge themselves to be supportive. It might get more of these kinds of broadcasts -- which I am betting everyone would like.

Wedonit, I don't think anyone is commenting on Lysa Burke's skills outside the room she's commentating in right now.
I think she's doing a lot better commentating today as opposed to yesterday. I think the main issue yesterday was that sometimes she seemed to not entirely be paying attention. She seems to be a little more attentive and therefore commentating better today.

I think Lysa is getting into the groove as the class goes on - it's tough and somewhat unfair that she's not ringside with the monitors there. She knows as much if not more than any other commentator.

Suprising number of 'not perfect' rounds. I mean this in a good way if thay makes any sense. I'm just really glad to see some real proof that they really are making these courses hard! I've never had a chance to watch an entire derby before.
At this point I would just take the coop option instead of the 4'.
Woah - Rumba's round is amazing so far.

I don't know much of this woman, so I won't say which one of us rides better, though I'm quite sure she has more experience. Can I explain a swap and why it's a fault, yes. Can I explain hunters to the average person, yes. It's what I do. As someone who very much wants to be a judge, I could probably write a book explaining all of this. I take my students to Devon every year and try to teach them judging. Personally, I DO think I could do a better job commentating, and would welcome the chance. At least I would know WHICH lead a horse was on! lol No bandwagon hopping here for me, nothing personal to her, but I just don't think she's doing a great job.
