I saw an odd bit the other day while horse shopping. The owner said it was a Jay Shuttleworth bit. It had regular D rings, The mouthpiece looked like a curb chain, except the rings were a little smaller/closer together.

Why would someone use this type of a bit?

Thanks!

Jay Shuttleworth makes a wide variety of bits (http://www.chronicleforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=186828). He's quite interesting, you can find him at larger shows with his bike and box.

I have a Gumball D Ring that he made for me 20 or more yrs ago. It is just that, a series of stainless balls. I love it, and the horses seem to as well. Great for one that can be heavy, as it unlike a regular snaffle, breaks in multiple places, rather than one jointed link and it makes it harder to lean on. It is not a harsh bit at all.

Not sure about the one you describe however...

I haven't seen the bit you're describing, but I have purchased bits from Jay. He's a great guy and seems to come up with great solutions that keep the horses comfortable and happy. A custom bit from Jay is worth its weight in gold... sometimes literally ;)

I have that bit and love it...great for a horse that pulls out with his nose, very lightweight, and unless the horse is pulling it sits there not bothering anybody...

My big eq horse was a 17.3 hand old fashioned Hanoverian with a 6" mouth for whom I had a custom made ported sweet mouth pelham made for. Although it was expensive, Jay made it "for" the horse and he lived in it for years. Now that he's retired, I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with a 6" mouth, hopefully we won't be breeding horses quite that big seeing as I'm only 5'3 :-)

Jay will take in bits on "trade" and you can get another one of your choice. :)

Awesome! Thanks. He must be a neat guy to be around, too!

And, mroades, thanks for your input on the reason for using this bit.

I have been buying bits from Jay for years. He is very clever, and great to deal with.

I have this bit and do not find it to be particularly severe. The reason I have it is because it has no joint to poke my TB in the roof of his mouth, which is something that tends to offend him.
