Is there anything that you can put on horse bug bites to stop the itch ?

I mean, you can go down to your local pharmacy and get something like this for humans:

Does a horsey version of anti-itch cream exist for bug bites (that's not necessarily cortisone)?

Antihistamines would work.

calm Coat works and as was said antihistamines such as benadryl, sudafed, etc. Columbia Veterinary powder is wonderful. I've only seen it in the KVVet catalog and one little out of the way tack shop in Maine. It's wonderful stuff, good for humans ( poisonn ivy, bug bites, etc)as well as animals.

Depending on the size of the area to be covered I just use regular people anti-itch lotion (hydrocortisone) on my horse. If you need to cover a large ares then it gets harder since the human size tubes only go so far, but it has been very effective for me. My horse came in from the pasture one day with a bug bite the size of a golf ball...smeared some hydrocortisone on it and in less than 10 minutes it was gone

Just remember that all cortizone products and antihistimines are ILLEGAL to show with. Dexamethazone is the exception in small doses.

If you're using cortizone or benadryl, make sure you withdraw the drugs at least one week prior to a competition.

For what it's worth, 10 benadryl a day in the feed seem to help chronic horses however in the case of hives, I'd go straigt to the dex.

Best non steroidal I have used so far. First year that my horse does not rub his tail out. Can't say enough good things about those products.

Else of course there's hydrocortisone sprays like

And if all else fails antihistamine you get from your vet, best I found for itching to be Hydroxyzine

I've used almost every human topical anti itch product pretty successfully on my horses. I don't show them anymore, so I don't worry about any of it "testing".
