I started using Garlic from Smartpak way back in the springtime hoping it would combat the flies like stated in the catalog.
After many months and money (grrrrr:mad:) it has done crap to repel flies.
Am I the only one who wasted all this money for nothing?
Anyone have luck with it?

I buy the cheap garlic powder from the supermarket (in the large size containers). I don't see any difference. We use fly predators and there's still plenty of flies, too. But there are other farms nearby, so the flies can breed there and come visit. :D

Last year, I did Buggzo (from Horsetech) and thought it did a great job -- I had hardly any flies here at home where I have two horses, and my horse at the boarding barn stopped breaking out in hives (which he had previously from the fly bites). So this year, I put them all on it again and the flies have been really bad here on the ones at home. So I'm not sure if it is helping at all or we just had a good year last year. The hive horse has been hive-free, so at least that might indicate it is helping -- last year, he'd just get a few bites on him and be covered in hives.
I did fly predators the first year that I had horses at home and felt they didn't do a thing. We also do fly traps (those rescue bag ones) around the place, and that seems to help.

No - but don't feel bad. I once ordered probiotics from SmartPak, only to find it was the same brewer's yeast my DH already had pounds of.:o
If garlic repelled bugs, I would be bug-free - instead of the mammal du jour on the mosquito menu, as I am. I've never found another warm-blooded creature the damn things find tastier than myself. And I eat garlic practically every meal.
No vampires at First Light Farm:winkgrin:, but garlic hasn't made a dent in the mozzie population.

Jury is still out on the "garlic Experiment" for me. I use a feed thru, so flies are minimal anyway, but I wanted to REPEL the ones still around. I tried Bug Off. I don't see swarms of them landing on my horse, but She does get a few and the BIG nasty bombers still seem to find her . although, they don't seem to have actually bitten her, .Landing is bad enough and flying around is very distracting. I started off with a small container, but all the store had was the huge one when I went back for more, so I have tons left. I keep feeding it- just in case! Does anyone know if there are other benefits to it that would keep me feeding it all year? Oh, and she doesn't smell like a pizzeria!
