My horse has had a sore in his mouth on the right side right where the bit goes. I think it originated from a loose ring snaffle I tried that was a little to small. (I usually use a gag with bit guards, but I have to get used to using a loose-ring without bit guards for dressage...yada yada yada. Anyway, at least I can use a hackamore, but I need to start working on more lateral work as his rehab progresses and this thing is healing SO slowly.

He had an abscess in his mouth from a sharp tooth years ago, but I don't think this is an abscess. Any rememdies that may be safe to promote healing and keep it from constantly opening when he eats? He has had it for nearly a month - its not infected, but it does bother him a little, gave him some banamine in the beginning to bring down swelling, but am at a loss whether there is something I can physically put there like we do for canker sores...

Thanks.

It might be a summer sore based on the fact that it isn't healing.

Hmmm, will have to do some research on that then - its in such a bad spot no topical stuff will work and he is already on daily de-worming, so I don't know how the other remedies would work if it is in fact a summer sore.

Thank you.

corona ointment ought to stay put on a horses lip... my horses hate the stuff, but yours might not run at the smell of it. You could also try people lip stuff or calendula cream. It sound like you need to keep it soft so that it doesn't keep cracking open.
